Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 29, 2016 First reading: Zephaniah 2:3, 3:12-13 Second reading: Corinthians 1:26-31 Third reading: Matthew 5:1-12a A reading from the book of the Prophet Seek the LORD, all you humble of the earth, who have observed his law; seek justice, seek humility; perhaps you may be sheltered on the day of the LORD's anger. But I will leave as a remnant in your midst a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD: the remnant of Israel. They shall do no wrong and speak no lies; nor shall there be found in their mouths a deceitful tongue; they shall pasture and couch their flocks with none to disturb them. A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians Consider your own calling, brothers and sisters. Not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Rather, God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something, so that no human being might boast before God. It is due to him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, as well as righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, so that, as it is written, "Whoever boasts, should boast in the Lord." A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven."

Speak up with concerns about a child’s environment Parent and caregiver observations can help protect a child in danger, and you should know when it’s important to speak up. Although it may be awkward to approach a parent you do not know, if you have witnessed a scenario where the child is in danger of physical or mental abuse, it is your responsibility to act in that child’s best interest. In addition to reporting concerns, think about any practical solutions that can help keep kids safe pending an investigation and solution. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Voicing Concerns About a Child’s Environment,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES

Year 1 January 22nd at 3:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Year 2 January 29th at 3:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Religious Education Office Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 22, 2017 Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12, Reflecting in God’s Word There are few people in the world who understand the immediacy of today's Gospel like a parent does! The demands of the day are genuinely important, from the first stirrings of the morning, into the commitment-filled day, to the evening and bedtime routine. A huge part of our day requires a "stop-on-a-dime" reaction from us. Many things we "stop-on-a-dime" for are important, but have we thought today how the urgency of our day-to-day- decisions compares to the urgency of Jesus calling his disciples? With what urgency do we call our children to discipleship? How do they recognize us as disciples of Jesus. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family Following the evening meal or when your family gathers for bedtime prayers, share one thing about your day that indicates you are a "fisher or people." Encourage all members of the family to think about how they are disciples for Jesus-how they carry the Good News into the neighborhood, their school, or their work. RELIGIOUS ED. OFFICE HOURS R.E. Office hours are Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8:30 am to 4:00 pm; Wednesday 12:00 to 8:00 pm. Friday by appointment only; closed Saturday and Sunday. For more information you can contact Irma at (323) 725-7578 Ext. 312. Question of the Week Children: What could you do for someone this week that would tell them something about Jesus? Adults: To whom could you preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ this week with actions rather than with words? Pregunta de la semana Niños: ¿Que podrias acer tu para alguien esta semana que le diria algo acerca de Jesus? Adultos: ¿A quien le podrias proclamar el Evangelio the Jesuscristo esta semana con acciones en ves the palabras? SACRAMENTAL MARRIAGE INFORMATION If you would like information regarding Marriage Preparation, please call the Religious Education Office at least six months in advance of proposed Wedding date at (323) 725-7578 Ext. 312.
