Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings The Transfiguration of the Lord

August 6, 2017 First reading: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 Second reading: Peter 1:16-19 Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9 A reading from the Book of the Prophet Daniel As I watched: Thrones were set up and the Ancient One took his throne. His clothing was snow bright, and the hair on his head as white as wool; his throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. A surging stream of fire flowed out from where he sat; thousands upon thousands were ministering to him, and myriads upon myriads attended him. The court was convened and the books were opened. As the visions during the night continued, I saw one like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven; when he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him, the one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship; all peoples, nations, and languages serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed. A reading from the second letter of Saint Peter Beloved: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, "This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased."We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrate and were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and do not be afraid." And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, "Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

Religious Education Office Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 30, 2017 Sunday’s Gospel, Matthew 13:44-52 Reflecting in God’s Word We often let our children know what we think is valuable or what has little value. Sometimes we do this with body language and facial expressions. Sometimes we show them by what we choose to spend our time, money and energy on. Think about your actions for just one day and make a mental list of what you have shown to be "jewels" in your life. Be honest and if necessary, make some adjustments as a result of this reflection. Bringing the Gospel Into your Family Look through family photos and identify members of your immediate and extended family. Describe a way in which each one of those people is a special jewel in the Kingdom of God. In what way does each person represent a special gift from God? Question of the Week Children: What good thing do you want so much that you would give up something else to get it? Adults: What would you be willing to "sell", or do without, in order to achieve your dreams for yourself or your family? Pregunta de la semana Niños: ¿Que cosa buena deseas tanto que dejarias algo mas para adquirirla? Adultos: ¿Que estarias dispuesto a "vender" o prescindir, con el find de alcanzar tus suenos para ti o tu familia?

The Religious Education Ministry will be accepting applications for Religious Education Classes, after all morning Masses on Sunday, July 30th . For applications or any information, please stop by the table in the Patio area after Mass this Sunday.

DID YOU KNOW?

Adults and children should be familiar with fire extinguishers Every home should have a fire extinguisher, and parents and older children should know how to use it in case of emergency. Small fires can escalate quickly, and there is not always time to wait for the fire department. Parents should familiarize themselves with the extinguishers in their homes, and teach children where the extinguishers are located and how to operate them safely. Use the PASS trick to help kids remember what to do: Pull the pin, Aim at the fire’s base, Squeeze the handle Sweep from side to side. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Fire Extinguisher Tips Everyone Should Know,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Enthronement of The Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Homes The Legion of Mary would like to announce that anyone wishing to have the Sacred Heart of Jesus enthroned in their homes or anyone wishing information on this beautiful apostolate in which Jesus Christ is proclaimed the Lord of the Home, should contact Lita de la Cruz at 626-571-5900 or Carmen Ramirez at 562-908-6549. For those interested in having the Sacred Heart of Jesus enthroned in their home but do not have a picture or statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Legion of Mary will provide one.
