24th Sunday in Ordinary Time. 10th Anniversary, 9/11.

GETTING TO KNOW OUR CATHOLIC SAINTS: St. John Chrysostom (349-407) Feast Day: September 13

Like many Church fathers, such as Gregory and Augustine, John began serving the Church as a monk. By his conversion at the age of twenty, John had acquired substantial

secular learning, to which he now added the study of theology. Ordained a deacon, he began to show his prowess for preaching, which would earn him his title, Chrysostom or

“Golden-mouthed”. So great was his renown that the emperor called him to head the important see of Constantinople. He was made bishop in 398. One of the subjects to

which John frequently turned his eloquence was justice for the poor. He himself dismissed much of the patriarchal staff so that he could provide an example of simplicity and help those in need. He also authored a beautiful liturgy that bears his name. His love of true worship led him to send a crowd to destroy the great temple of Artemis. Naturally, there were many who were envious of John and opposed to his rigorous ways. His enemies managed to convince the emperor to send him into exile. However, a violent earthquake struck the city soon after his departure, and the populace called for his return.

Before long, John’s preaching turned against the Empress Eudoxia, who lived lavishly and had a statue of herself placed before a church. Again John was sent into exile; this time even the protest of the Pope was

unable to save him. He sent many letters to his flock that are still preserved, but he died before ever reaching his place of exile (modern day country of Georgia).

PARISHIONER CONTACT INITIATIVE In an effort to reach out to all of our parishioners, the Pastoral Council will start calling all of our registered parish

members in order to invite you to our many fall activities. The calling effort will begin on September 13th and will continue until we are able to reach out to everyone for which we have phone numbers. We hope that this effort will

help us to continue involving all of our parishioners in our vibrant parish life.
