OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP MAY 1, 2011 ELLICOTT CITY, MARYLAND www.olphparish.org Dear Brothers and Sisters, Happy Easter! This second Sunday of Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday, a celebration of the gift of the Lord’s mercy entrusted to the Apostles after the Resurrection, when He breathed the Holy Spirit on them, saying, “Those whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, those whose sins you hold bound are held bound.” (John 20:23) This message of mercy was proclaimed last century by St. Faustina, a Polish nun to whom the Lord appeared. Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina and promoted devotion to the Divine Mercy, establishing today's feast day. It is no coincidence that this is the day chosen for Pope John Paul's beatification. We ask for his prayers for us, that our own confidence in the Lord’s Divine Mercy might increase, and that we might be quick to share this message of mercy with others. This weekend we also have our own reason to celebrate here at OLPH as our 2nd graders received their First Holy Communion on Saturday. Please keep them in your prayers, that with their families they will enjoy this gift each Sunday at Mass and find in the Lord’s Body and Blood all the grace they need to keep growing spiritually. A special thanks to Judy Gruel, our Director of Religious Education, and her team of catechists who worked so hard in preparing our children for this special day. I am so grateful for the care, time, and energy they put into preparing our children - thank you! We look forward to having our 2nd graders back again next Sunday for our annual May Crowning following the 9am Children’s Mass on Mother's Day. Please join us! GETTING TO KNOW OUR CATHOLIC SAINTS:

St. Athanasius (296-373) Feast: May 2

St. Athanasius is one of the most famous of the Latin Fathers. His public life consists of a long battle against the heresy of Arianism, by which according to Blessed John Henry

Newman Athanasius “secured the faith” for us. He was present at the Council of Nicea in 325 as his bishop’s secretary, when Arius was condemned and the phrase “one in being with the Father” defined, which we still recite in the Nicene creed. Athanasius succeeded as head of the see of Alexandria before he was 30 years old. He applied his fantastic energy, wit, and courage to battling the many people – including bishops and emperors - who continued to

deny that the Son of God was eternal and divine. In the process, Athanasius penned a famous creed himself (known as “Quicumque vult” from the first line: “Whoever wishes to be saved…”) and coined the title “catholic” for the true Church. He was constantly being condemned and reinstated, once requiring him to surprise Emperor Constantine returning from a hunt to demand a fair trial. On his third exile, in the desert of

North Africa, he continued his writing undaunted. As soon as possible, he returned again to his post where he was finally allowed to die in peace surrounded by beloved supporters. His relics are found, however, in Venice.
