January 14, 2018, 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 3
A Note From The Pastor…
Last week we celebrated the Epiphany. Usually we celebrate the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on the Sunday after the Epipha-
ny. But because of the timing of Christmas this year (falling on
the Monday of the fourth week of Advent), we celebrated the
Baptism of the Lord this past Monday, and then Ordinary Time
began. Ordinary Time will continue until the beginning of Lent.
The key dates for Easter and Lent are easy to remember this
year: Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th, 2018, Valentine’s
Day; and this year Easter falls on April 1st, 2018.
This weekend at all the Masses we will have a second collection
to support the Church in Latin America. The needs and chal-
lenges facing the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean are
great: There are few teaching resources and a poor infrastruc-
ture. Your prayerful and monetary support will help to spread
the faith to people who are very much open to the Catholic Faith.
I am looking for one, two, or three persons to take over the ministry of washing the altar linens.
This would be a behind-the-scenes ministry of reverently washing the linens used on the altar or
during Mass. It is a little bit different than doing regular laundry because these linens are used for
a sacred purpose. Please contact me at the rectory or email me if you would like to participate in
this important ministry. I will be away from the parish on retreat this week, but please call the
rectory and leave me a message or email me to find out more about this important ministry.
I would like to speak very briefly with ushers after each Mass on the weekend of January 27 –
28th. The meeting should only take about five minutes.
Please refer to this week’s bulletin regarding this year’s
upcoming Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). This year’s
theme is “Come, Follow Me,” and the in-pew Appeal will
happen at all the Masses on February 3rd and 4th. Please
begin the process of prayerfully considering how much
you might contribute to this year’s appeal. As always I
am grateful for your generosity.
God Bless,
Fr. Paul

Religious Educa!on
There will be No
Religious Educa!on Clas-
ses for Mar!n Luther
King, Jr. Day, on Sunday,
January 14th, or Monday,
January 15th, 2018. Classes will
resume on Sunday, January 21st,
and Monday, January 22nd.
Kasana-Luwerro Uganda Seminarian Fund Appeal
We are one week from the end of our first appeal period for the Seminari-
ans in Uganda. The final date for contribu!ons to be submi#ed is Sunday,
January 21, 2018.
Fr Charles is on faculty at the St Mary Ggaba Seminary in Kampala, Ugan-
da and is also the Sports Chaplain and Music Chaplain.
A semester costs $300 for tui!on, housing and food for each seminari-
an. This is a bargain by USA standards, but is a fortune in Uganda. If you
would like to help the seminarians, OLH will be holding appeals 2x/year.
There are two ways to do this:
1. Contribute to the fund for “those in greatest need”
1. Sponsor a seminarian ($600/year 4 year commitment)
If you sponsor a seminarian, you will then correspond with your seminari-
an via email.
Checks are wri#en to Our Lady of Humility (this money will be on your
year-end tax statement from OLH and is tax deduc!ble).
There are colored envelopes at the church doors. Please use these so that
the money will not be misdirected. They can be put in the collec!on bas-
ket or delivered to the Rectory.

Liturgy Of The Word For
Children Prayer Leaders
Needed
Those of you who a!end the
9AM and 11AM Masses, see the
children being dismissed with an
adult. They are going to the first
classroom adjacent to the Parish
Center. There they hear the
readings in a simpler form. The
Prayer Leader discusses with the
child the meaning of the readings,
and how they can live out its’
message in the coming week.
The Usher signals the Prayer
Leader, that the homily in Church
is finished, which gives just enough
#me to say a simple Creed, their
prayer inten#ons, and get back to
Church during the collec#on.
We could use more Prayer
Leaders. If you think this is
something you would like to do,
let anyone of the Prayer Leaders
know, and Diana Jurista will
contact you to give you more
details.

Quinceanera Requirements
We have many requests for Quinceaneras and want to
ensure everyone is aware of the requirements for sched-
uling this celebra"on.
We require that your family be registered par"cipa"ng
parishioners at Our Lady of Humility Parish. Registra"on
is required one year prior to reques"ng a date for the
Quinceanera celebra"on. Please note, registra"on for
Our Lady of Humility School or Religious Educa"on classes, does not regis-
ter you as a parishioner. The parish has a separate form available online,
at the entries of the church, or in the Parish Office.
Registered parishioners should contact the rectory a minimum of 9 months
in advance to schedule the Quinceanera as prepara"on classes must be
scheduled prior to the celebra"on.
We cannot guarantee specific dates will be available, so it is best to regis-
ter early.
Eucharis"c Adora"on – Drawing Closer To Jesus
The best kind of friend is the one with whom you can
spend "me without having to say anything. You can just
share the moment, and enjoy each other’s company,
knowing your rela"onship is deeper than the spoken word.
That kind of silent communica"on is what takes place
between you and Jesus when you par"cipate in Eucharis"c
Adora"on.
Eucharis"c Adora"on is the spiritual prac"ce of spending "me in the
presence of the exposed Host.
Eucharis"c Adora"on provides us with a chance to be with our Savior
one on one. Through this prac"ce, we are invited to spend "me alone with
God in His real, physical form, and to bring to Jesus all of our cares, con-
cerns, prayers, hopes, and thoughts. We set aside a special "me, a respite
from our hec"c modern lives, to create a personal space in which to meet
our God.
By doing so, we grow more in tune with God. We put ourselves in
posi"on to talk to Him, and also to listen. We reserve a "me and a space
when we ask Jesus to come into our hearts and minds, and when we walk
away, we are transformed.
Even the most holy people we can think of have found blessings, grace,
and strength in Eucharis"c Adora"on.
“Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life,” Mother
Teresa once said. “Night and day, He is there. If you really want to grow in
love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adora!on.”
Do something special in this New Year, please consider coming to
Eucharis"c Adora"on on Thursdays at 2PM. Come, spend some "me with
the Lord, and receive His blessings! He is wai"ng for you!
Soup Kitchen
Do something helpful this New
Year. Thursday, January 25th, is
Our Lady of Humility’s commit-
ment to provide volunteers to
help with the Soup Kitchen at
Holy Family Services (the old St.
Bartholomew Parish) located at:
914 8th Street, Waukegan.
It is always the fourth Thurs-
day of every month. Food prep-
ara"on
begins at 3PM, dinner is served
at 5:30PM, followed by clean-up.
We are usually done by 7PM.
Any "me that you can give is
greatly appreciated. We are in
desperate need of more assis-
tance from our Parishioners on a
regular basis. We usually have
lots of volunteers for the holi-
days, but your help is needed
every month!
If you have any ques"ons,
please call Pat at (847) 662-4095.
January 14, 2018, 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 9
Ask a Priest
Q: I am a li!le confused about the "meline of the Epiphany. How old was Jesus when the Magi
visited? Did Mary and Joseph buy a house in Bethlehem? Any clarifica"on would be appreci-
ated.
A: Those of us that have been faithfully a!ending Mass these past few Sundays have heard so
many great Gospel passages, all of which moved the narra"ve at a rapid pace; the Angel Gabriel
announces Jesus’ concep"on to Mary and to St. Joseph; the couple travels to Bethlehem to be
enrolled in the census, and Jesus is born in the stable; Shepherds receive the message of the An-
gel, and visit the Christ child; Joseph and Mary present Jesus in the Temple, and hear from the prophet Simeon; and of
course, last weekend, Magi arrive, bringing gi$s of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
We are all familiar with all these details of the Christmas story. Most movies and pageants are scripted this way. Howev-
er, we need to realize that there are actually two different stories here. They were wri!en by different authors for differ-
ent intended audiences, and the two of them did not collaborate beforehand! Knowing these differences will (hopefully!)
give us a greater apprecia"on for the power of the Divine inspira"on of the texts.
So let us begin with the Gospel of Ma!hew, composed in 85-90 AD. Ma!hew is wri"ng to a community of Jewish con-
verts living in or around Pales"ne. These men and women would iden"fy as Jewish, but were already beginning to have
conflicts with those who followed the ‘old religion.’ As well as a solid understanding of the Old Testament and Hebrew
idioms, the members of this community were also quite wealthy.
In his infancy narra"ve, Ma!hew establishes Jesus as solidly Jewish. His genealogy includes the names of famous people
from the Old Testament, as well as all of the Kings of Judah (Jesus is Jewish royalty!). Mary and Joseph live in Bethlehem.
The Angel appears to Joseph, not Mary, and addresses him as the ‘Son of David.’ When the child Jesus is about 2 years
old, the Magi (more royalty!) visit the child in his parents’ house, and give him fancy gi$s. Joseph is warned by the angel
to take his family and flee to Egypt, and Herod sends his soldiers to kill the children in Bethlehem 2 and under. A$er
Herod’s death, Joseph brings the family back to Israel, but instead of returning to Bethlehem, they move to Nazareth,
where Jesus grows up.
Luke’s Gospel is also wri!en around 85-90 AD. He is most likely wri"ng to a group of Gen"le (but not Greek) Chris"ans,
perhaps in An"och. Luke avoids the religious controversies with the Pharisees so important to Ma!hew’s community of
Jewish converts, and he likewise avoids Hebrew words or idioms. His community was not very wealthy, and this leads to
the portrayal of Jesus as a poor man, encouraging his disciples to not store up for themselves treasures on earth.
In his infancy narra"ve, Luke establishes the poverty of Jesus. While David is men"oned in the genealogy, none of the
other kings are included. Mary and Joseph live in Nazareth, a Podunk town in the middle of nowhere. The Angel appears
to Mary, an unwed virgin, to deliver the message of the Incarna"on. Mary and Joseph are forced to travel to Bethlehem
for the census, and when there, cannot even get a room in the inn; Jesus is born in a stable, and laid in a feeding trough
for barnyard animals. Instead of exo"c Magi bearing gold, Jesus is visited by poor, smelly, shepherds on the night of his
birth. A$er 40 days, his parents present him in the Temple, offering two turtledoves instead of the customary ox, because
they were too poor to afford one. A$er hearing the prophecy of Simeon, they return home to Nazareth, where the child
grows in wisdom and stature.
Now, we might be tempted to ask, ‘Which version is true/false?’ This is not a very helpful approach! What we need to
realize is that neither Ma!hew nor Luke was interested in wri"ng a novel, or a biography. Rather, they wanted to share
the Good News of Jesus with as many people as possible! They knew that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and that he was
raised in Nazareth, and so they share the story about how this came about, emphasizing certain aspects to inspire their
readers. Even if one (or both) of these infancy narra"ves is not historically accurate, it does not take away from the Truth
that is revealed to us: Jesus, the Son of God, was born of the Virgin Mary. He came to save us from our sins, and give us
the opportunity to inherit eternal life.
Peace
Fr. Mike

10 Welcome to Our Lady of Humility Catholic Church
January 14, 2018, 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time 11
Please Make Your Gi! to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal
“Come, Follow Me”
Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic
Appeal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those
served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank
you for your gi!s. Please return your response as soon as possi-
ble.
The ACA offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to
“Come, Follow Me.”
In addi#on to providing for ministries and services throughout the
Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help
to ministries here in our Parish.
As we contemplate God’s many gi!s to us, we should also reflect
on our gra#tude for these gi!s. Your financial support for the
work of our Parish, our Archdiocese, and the Church throughout
the world is, in fact, one way to express this gra#tude. Please give
generously to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal.
When our parish reaches its goal of $33,139 in paid pledges,
100% of the addi#onal funds received will be returned to us for
use in our Parish.
