The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)

Too many people in the United States find themselves living in poverty. It is true that poverty challenges us daily, but it also presents an opportunity for true encounter and solidarity with the poor so the joy and hope of the Gospel can be brought to those who are in great need.

In 1970, the Catholic bishops of the United States started “The Campaign for Human Development” also known as “CCHD”. This initiative brings Catholic social teaching to life by funding community and economic development pro-grams across the United States that help poor and marginal-ized people join together to make decisions, seeking solu-tions to local problems, and finding ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods. CCHD also provides educational opportunities for Catholics to learn about poverty, stand in solidarity with those affected by it, and reflect on their own responsibility before the great need of others.

How can we be involvement and make a difference?

1. By learning more about poverty (please visit www.povertyusa.org.) 2. By praying for those who give and receive CCHD sup-port. 3. And by supporting a special annual collection.

The 2018 Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Collection will take place in parishes throughout our diocese next weekend, November 17-18. This year, CCHD awarded $240,000 to 12 programs in Ala-meda and Contra Costa counties. These included:

- Northern California Land Trust to create perma-nently affordable housing for low and moderate in-come residents in the East Bay. - United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda Coun-ty to address food insecurity experienced by low-income and homebound seniors. - Monument Impact to provide mental health and leadership development for Day Laborers in Concord

We thank you in advance for your generous support. Special envelopes are inserted in today’s bulletin for your convenience. Please make your check payable to OLGC with “The Catholic Campaign For Human Develop-ment” or simply “CCHD” on the memo line.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUOUS SUPPORT! Next Week’s 2nd Collection: HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Veterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the “Great War”) on the eleventh hour of the elev-enth day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actu-ally a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Mar-tin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures. Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He be-came a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier’s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or “chapel,” the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the custom-ary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as “Saint Martin’s Lent” or “Martinmas,” that later developed into the season of Advent.

Q. "Why are we punished for Adam and Eve's sin?" A. As descendants of Ad-am and Eve, we are born into original sin. The nature we have inherited is in a fallen condition, negatively affected by the absence of sanctifying grace, lost through Adam's sin. That original sin, though, is not something we have "committed"-it is a "condition" we inherit (CCC 404). After our first parents' sin, God did not aban-don us to sin and death. He sent His only Son who, through His death on the cross, not only makes amends for the sin of Adam and of the whole world, but renews all things in Himself: "I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full" Jn 10:10). There-fore, it is Christ who restores that which was lost through original sin and raises us up to even greater heights by inviting us to share in his very life. This is the reason why baptism is so important. It is the means by which sanctify-ing grace enters our souls and our friendship with God is restored. If Adam and Eve had remained faithful to God, their children would have inherited the same nature en-joyed by their parents in the garden. However, this does not mean they had an exclusive right to that inheritance. Furthermore, if we had also gained that inheritance, we can hardly imagine that we would be complaining about having it so good, especially when considering we did nothing to deserve it. We should keep this in mind when we compare the sin of Adam and Eve with our own sins and lack of faithfulness to God.
