Our Lady and St Philip Neri Catholic Primary School CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
Week Commencing:: 21st June 2015
Dear Mums, Dads and Carers
We have had so much going on over the past few week that we have not had the room on the newsletter to inform you of all the exciting visits and experiences the children have had, with even more to come before
the term is out.
Last week, whilst year 6 were enjoying the sun on the Isle of Wight (photos on the website), classes 6, 7 and 8 took part in an immersive theatre production at the
Maritime Museum-studying artefacts
In addition to this, on Thursday class 8 visited Bonus Pastor school in order to perform a short
drama/dance piece in their drama studio. This was used as an introduction to a theatrical piece by the secondary school students on the tale of Hansel and Gretal. The audience consisted of our year 5 pupils and a class from Good Shepherd, This was
a wonderful opportunity for them and they performed amazingly.
Over the coming weeks we have even more
enrichment opportunities lined up across both sites. Mini-Beast man has been showing off his
bugs and legs again at the infants, a police horse visit, and reception will be visiting Godstone Farm.
Class 9 will also be looking to be going on a clean
river study soon, whilst we also have the year 6 play, leavers’ mass and the trip to Aylesford Priory,
the Summer Concert and a talent show! The term will end before you know it!
New to Reception Meeting
Next Wednesday we are
having a meeting for the new intake into reception for 2015. I strongly urge all parents to attend, especially if you have
older children in the school, as teaching in reception as
changed dramatically over the years. We will run through a
typical school day, changes to pupil premium, phonics,
school uniform and health and safety. Mr Ringham, will be in attendance for this meeting. 10:30am in the infant school
hall. 1/7/15

Blasts From The Past
It is so lovely keeping in touch with pupils once they have left the
school. Having been here for nearly 14 years, you get to know the families quite well. So it was lovely this week to be to have three
former pupils contact the school. On Monday a former pupil Aaron Truss came in to visit the juniors. He spent the afternoon with one of his former teachers, Mrs Sergeant. Aaron is now working in the
film industry and has been busy editing the latest Jurassic Park film. His next work involves a spoof James Bond film, which he is
directing. He said that the inspiration for his future career stemmed from some work that he did with Mrs Sergeant many
years ago. He was bowled over when Mrs Formaggi found tucked away in the back of a cupboard the very text that he was referring to. We do have up-to-date material in the school I promise you. He has said he’d like to revisit with some actors at some point!
This was a lovely treat.
Also in the news was Joe Gomez. Joe came and spoke to the juniors a year ago to talk about representing England in the under
17s and was just about to start the season with Charlton. A year on he has been signed by Liverpool for £3.5 million
pounds. I emailed his mum who told me that they all went up to Liverpool for the medical exam and had a look around his accommodation.
His mum’s only concern is whether he knows how to use the washing machine!
The Gomez family wished everyone well at OLSPN.
In addition I had an email from Elliot Morgan, a pupil in my first class here, informing me that he starts work in September as a
teacher at Perrymount school Three different but lovely pieces of information to share.

A reminder: the school band will be travelling up to perform at the Royal Festival Hall next

Kwik Cricket
On Thursday, under the baking sun, 8 pupils represented the
school at Kwik Cricket. The rules are as follows: 8 aside-4 boys and 4 girls from years 3 & 4 Each bowler bowls a maximum of 4 balls
Each player bowls once. Batsmen work in pairs and face a maximum of 2 overs.
Each runs scores 2. Each wide or no ball scores 2
Each wicket is -2 from the batting teams score. Teams start with 200 runs.
Our team consisted of Zoe, Allyson, Khadija, Julia, Jamie, Lenny, Calvin and Daniel.
In the first match we batted first against Downderry and scored
impressively-Lenny with an almighty 6, When fielding the team played even better. Jamie started it with
an impressive catch-and their was even a double run out. We won that match by 27 runs.
The second game seemed a much closer affair. We had taken 7
wickets against Downderry, but struggled to take more than a couple against St Augustine. Some great bowling by Zoe
managed to keep their runs down and we won by 28 runs.
In the final match against St William Of York we played extremely well. We didn’t score many fours or sixes, but some brilliant
fielding kept OLSPN on top. In the end the team were the outright winners having won all three matches.
Even better was seeing the children support each other with high fives and cheering on the team. What a great advert for cricket it
was!
Summer Concert
The reason why we have been asked to perform at the Royal Festival Halls is because of extremely high standards the children achieve in the music. This is not just with the band. With have an ensemble consisting of guitars and violins, a fantastic choir as well as every class having been taught to read music. Performing in public is a fantastic life skill, which really develops the children’s confidence. On Monday we get to showcase the musical talent of the pupils once more. All the juniors perform a medley of pieces at the church. All the juniors are to meet up in the school hall between 6pm -6:15pm in their school uniform. The performance then takes place in the church hall from 6;30 onwards. This is always a fantastic evening with parents and friends encouraged to attend.
Cake Sale
On Thursday and Friday the Friends ran a hugely successful cake sale. I think next year I should grow a goatee beard and
recreate Paul Hollywood and sample all the cakes. The Friends do an amazing job to raise funds for the school. They work
tirelessly to not only put on individual events and competitions, but those little and much appreciated events like refreshments for the
Welcome to Reception meetings or after the Summer concert. This really shows a school working together. If you think you could help support your child by participating in the Friend Association
please see a member.
Summer Fair
Saturday from 1pm-4pm at the juniors.
The church host their annual Summer Fair tomorrow. There
will be plants for sale, a tasty BBQ, Vintage goods, food, competitions and fun chance your luck activities.
Please support the church by attending and take advantage of the sunshine.
This is possibly the biggest cup cake I’ve ever
seen!
