vocation view—Humility is needed for those who choose to serve. Are you able to recognize your gifts and offer them in humble service? (Luke 14:1, 7-14)

Today’s readings remind us of a chief virtue that char-acterizes the Christian steward: humility. This is a virtue that is widely thought of as a form of self-abasement. That understanding, however, is off the mark. Humility is sim-ply the awareness of who (and Whose) we truly are. On one hand, we are children of the Most High God who loved us into existence and who, by virtue of our Baptism, have the Holy Trinity dwelling within us. On the other hand, we are children who are completely de-pendent on God for our existence and for every breath we take. Our Lord speaks of true humility in our Gospel passage from Luke, telling the parable of the guests invited to a wedding banquet and instructing us not to seek a place of honor at the banquet table, lest a more distinguished guest arrives and we are asked to move to a lower place. Jesus has much more in mind here than an etiquette les-son. He is reminding us that all glory belongs to God. The visual image He offers in having to slink down to a lower seat at the table points out how silly we are when we for-get to give God the credit for our blessings and talents.

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds22nd Sunday of Ordinary Time • Week of Sept. 1Reading I : Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29Conduct your affairs with humility.• Today’s first reading gives us the wisdom of Ben Sira,

a second-century Jerusalem sage.• Because of the upper-class situation of the sage and his

students, today’s lesson on humility is dramatic.• The final verses introduce a favorite subject of Ben Sira,

the giving of alms.Reading II : Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24aYou have drawn near to the city of the living God.• In today’s reading from Hebrews the image of the

Israelites at Mount Sinai is colored with details from the book of Exodus and other Old Testament passages.

• The gloomy and fearful aspects of the old covenant experience are emphasized in contrast to the picture of Mount Zion.

• Christians do not have to live in fear of imitating the failures of certain figures in the history of salvation, for they have the advantage of the person of Jesus, who sealed the new covenant in his own blood.

Gospel : Luke 14:1, 7-14Whoever exalts self shall be humbled and whoever

humbles self will be exalted.• In today’s Gospel, Luke presents a scene with Jesus in the

home of a Pharisee.• Jesus addresses the guests in the house with a parable that

warns against self-exaltation. This lesson comes soon after the disciples were reprimanded by Jesus for vying for position.

• Jesus’ words to the host point out that the kingdom is for everyone, and our hospitality is to embrace all, especially those who are overlooked.

Since our beginning in 1923, for over 95 years Catholic Charities North Dakota has been dedicated to facilitating adoptions of children into loving, stable, and nurturing fami-lies. The Pregnancy, Parenting and Adoption Services (PPAS) program helps birth parents make the right decision for their child, and helps adoptive parents make the right choice for their family. There are three types of adoption: open, semi-open, and closed. No matter what type of adoption you may choose, we can help you work through the process! Adults Adopting Special Kids (AASK) is North Dakota’s program providing adoption services to children in foster care and the families who adopt them. The program is a collaborative effort of Catholic Charities North Dakota and PATH North Dakota. Children in the AASK program are in need of a loving, permanent family to call their own. All the kids have been in foster care. They are unique with special concerns - they may be older, of a minority race, in a sibling group to be placed together, or may have physical, emotional or psychological needs. They are special kids looking for a home of their own!

On the other hand, when we live in humility —recognizing that all we have is a gift from God and using those gifts to serve Him and others — then God “exalts” us by filling us with even more of Himself and His grace. Jesus goes on to encourage us to serve and share our blessings with people facing circumstances that would make it impossible for them offer us any worldly advantage or prestige— “the poor, the crippled, the lame.” Our attitude and the way in which we serve and share should be centered on true humility — recognizing that we are all “little” ones in the eyes of God. We are all His children; brothers and sisters invited to our Father’s heavenly banquet.
