The Sabbatical (reprinted) Many of you perhaps are already aware that I will be leaving on Sabbatical January 1, 2020, following the last Mass here at St. Anthony. Every priest is eligible to have a sabbatical of three months every five years. My application was approved over four years ago before I was assigned to St. Anthony, St. Katherine and St. Paul. The purpose of a sabbatical is to separate oneself from the responsibilities and obligations of your priestly assignment for a period for study, prayer and rest. Each priest must determine how he will use that time and submit a proposal to the Bishop for his approval. Some of our priests will enroll in a program of renewal and refreshment. The North American College in Rome offers an excellent program and I am an alumnus of that program, once in 1999 and again in 2014. This sab-batical would be different. Bishop Kagan has been most supportive of my plan for my sabbatical and encouraged me to keep working to accomplish my goal. Even with the recent injury, the Bishop was encouraging me to keep my plan moving forward. So what is my plan, you may ask. I have decided to live in Assisi, Italy, for the three-month period. I have rented an apartment that I have lived in four or five times before and will take part in Masses around the medieval city and find spiritual direction from some local Franciscans I have come to know. Assisi is a place of inspiration and peace and each time I go there. I never grow tired of it. I have come to know some of the locals and enjoy their hospitality and friendship. The location is beyond description and I am eager to return to a place that allows me to grow spiritually. Assisi is a place where the spirit of St. Francis contin-ues to move the hearts of all who come there. My sabbati-cal project will be to continue to work on a book that was started five years ago and then suspended for personal rea-sons. Now I have a desire to pick it up again and work at developing it into the “testament” I wish to put my name to. Time will tell how it progresses. The apartment is very comfortable and located on the central piazza of the ancient town. Additional travel may happen but the only side trip planned from Assisi will be a trip to Salzburg, Austria, to get a “dose” of Mozart. Train travel is very good in Europe and a great way to see the countryside especially to Salz-burg. I am grateful to Fr. Charlie Heidt who has agreed to cov-er the parishes while I am gone. Please welcome him and enjoy his reflections on the Sacred Scriptures. He has been my spiritual director since I was ordained in 1988. He is a good man and a good priest and a good friend. I know if he needs any assistance from the parishes, he will find what he needs with your help. I leave on January 1 and will return to Linton on April 9, Holy Thursday, to begin to celebrate the “Triduum” with you. During my absence please be assured of my prayers for all of you in the place where Franciscan spirituality thrives. I know I will be at the tomb of St. Francis and St. Clare often and you will be remembered there. May God bless you and our parish families this winter and the upcoming Lenten Season. May this also be a time of renewal for each of you. “Ciao for now!”
Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Dave Zimmer

<-----To the left is the schedule as it is now of the committed weekly adorers of Eucharistic Adoration in our Chapel. There are many hours where only one adorer is listed. These are the hours that are in need of another committed adorer. It is always best to have two or more adorers per hour in case one is not able to be at their re-spective hour due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness or traveling from out of town dur-ing a storm or icy roads. You may be thinking that committing to a weekly hour is impossible! I’m too busy! Think of the time you are already com-mitted to during each week — an hour spent with Our Lord per week (other than Mass) is very do-able and it becomes part of your weekly commitments. Most of these adorers have been committed to their hour since Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel began seven years ago. If you have any questions about adoration, please feel free to ask any of the adorers or even go along with one of them some-time and see what it’s all about!
Jesus’ appeal to His Apostles in the garden is His appeal to us today:“Could you not watch one hour with me!”

Sunday Readings and BackgroundsEpiphany of the Lord • Week of Jan. 5Reading I : Isaiah 60:1-6Your light has come!• The reading from Isaiah refers to a time of great hope in ancient
Israel.• Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the Babylonians, was
about to be rebuilt.• In today’s passage, Isaiah associates light with the glory of
God’s presence.
Reading II : Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6We all share the same promise!• In the second reading, we glimpse a beginning of God’s
Kingdom in time.• Paul stresses that God’s promise to Israel is fulfilled in Jesus.• All people, both Gentiles and Jews share in salvation in Christ.
Gospel : Matthew 2:1-12They opened their coffers and presented him with gifts.• The Gospel reading today links Jesus to God’s promise to Israel.• The royal title given by the Magi to Jesus points to his role as
Messiah.• In ancient times, the birth of a great person was often associated
with astrological events. Continued to last page
As our celebration of Christmas continues, today we observe the great feast of The Epiphany of the Lord. The word “epiphany” comes from Greek and means manifestation or appearance. The stewardship way of life is one in which we live in grateful response to God’s countless manifestations in our lives. Our Gospel passage, from Matthew, has much to teach us about stewardship, through the actions of the magi. As good stewards, the magi were watching for manifestations of God’s presence in their lives. “We have seen the star at its rising,” they say. Good stewards are keenly aware of the “star” of God’s presence and His gifts in their lives. It is this awareness that fills them with gratitude and the desire to both worship God and share His gifts with others. The magi, upon seeing the manifestation of God’s presence in their lives, “were overjoyed.” Good stewards, who live with the awareness of God’s presence and gifts to them, simply can’t help but be filled with joy. Not necessarily the fleeting and superficial kind of joy the world promises through wealth or power, but rather the deep, unalterable joy only God can give. Finally, the magi were so filled with awe upon encountering the newborn Jesus, they prostrated themselves before him and “opened

their treasures and offered him gifts.” This is precisely why good stewards generously share their material gifts — as a loving act of worship to an extravagantly loving God. Let us rejoice in God’s manifestations in our lives and be watchful for the new ways He is calling us to share ourselves and our gifts in gratitude to our King in the year ahead.
