Every generation wants the next to be better off than their own – stronger, healthier and happier. This desire not only shapes most of our lives, it also provided the impetus for the creation of Harvesters.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of women converged to form Harvesters with the goal of helping to end hunger in Orange County. They wanted to ensure every person living in Orange County would have ample access to nutritious food.

Since then, Harvesters has been committed to making our community a better place for all people. We are grateful for the opportunity to lead this dynamic organization during its silver anniversary.

As we inch closer to achieving our goal, we recognize and thank the partners, donors and volunteers who give so generously of their resources to raise food, funds and hope. Their passion sustains us, and because of people like you, we know our momentum will create a future without hunger in Orange County.

With heartfelt thanks,

A GENERATION OF GRATITUDE

Harvesters formed 25 years ago as more than an idea. Our strength lies in our passion to end hunger in Orange County and support the families who struggle with food insecurity. We have, and continue, to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County and their initiatives.

It’s astonishing that, in one of the most affluent areas of the United States, one in five children could go hungry. With your help, we have raised awareness about hunger and the funds needed so Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County can increase its ability to serve local families.

As a community of activists, we’ve developed and launched unique programs and fundraised in order to further assist Second Harvest Food Bank. This has included addressing crucial, immediate needs and expanding much-needed programs that seek to educate future generations in order to continue the incredible momentum we’ve created towards this mission.

Since 2004, the Special Fund has identified and raised crucial funding for specific, urgent needs that include capital equipment like refrigerated trucks. Now, Second Harvest can deliver nutritious servings of fresh produce, deli meat, beef, chicken, dairy and other perishable groceries, often in less than 24 hours after receiving these food donations.

SPECIAL FUND

“IZZY AND THE CANDY PALACE”

IZZY’S CORNER

Inspired by the book Izzy and the Candy Palace, this colorful corner is located inside the Food Bank’s warehouse and provides children ages 7–13 an incredible opportunity to learn about hunger in their community and to get hands-on volunteering experience. Since 2014, Izzy’s Corner has had 5,095 volunteers and donated 8,947 hours.

Written by then 9-year-old Isabel Janavs, daughter of dedicated Harvester Michelle Janavs, Izzy and the Candy Palace is a book about a girl who stops a “well-meaning monster” from burying her town in candy. To date, the book has raised over $275,000. All proceeds continue to be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

THANK YOU TO OUR FOUNDERS

A quarter of a century ago, in an effort to address a shortfall in funding at Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, then board member Jill Johnson-Tucker and her good friend Jennifer Van Bergh decided to organize a little fundraiser. They had a modest goal: connect with friends and tell them about the hungry in Orange County and the good work happening at the foodbank (and maybe throw a little event of some sort!)

What happened next was organic and inspired. They invited 10 friends to join them for an informal gathering, and asked them to invite their friends. Fifty women showed up, and from those 50 women, Harvesters was born.

They reserved a small ballroom for their event, and had to expand several times until they ultimately sold out that first year, netting, not the $5,000 they hoped for, but nearly $50,000, which in a few short years became $100,00 and today nets over $650,000. They credit the generosity of the community and the vital work of the foodbank for their success. We in turn thank them for organizing that “little fundraiser” 25 years ago!

YOUTH INITIATIVE PROGRAMS

These programs enable and teach our youth a valuable hands on experience on the hunger problem our community faces, while cultivating a philanthropic spirit.

This program allows participants to donate $50 that in turn provides 150 meals. The first year sales were $16,000 or the equivalent of 48,000 meals!

Dear Friends,

Congratulations on your 25 years of dedication to feeding the hungry in Orange County! You’ve raised more than $6.5 million in funds, donated your time and talents, purchased equipment for the food bank, and incalculably increased awareness of hunger in our community. And you’ve created a sustainable organization and fundraising model that is making our community a better place for everyone. You should be very proud of these accomplishments!

As we move into the future, we look forward to partnering with you to achieve our Bold Goal of ending hunger in Orange County. That means ensuring that anyone in OC who needs food assistance can access enough high quality, nutritious food at a convenient and dignified distribution to see them through their time of need.

To do this, we’ll need to add more Permanent School Pantries and Mobile School Pantries to feed more children, increase the number of trucks and drivers in our fleet so we can rescue all the food that will otherwise go to waste, help grow our community partners’ capacity so they can distribute more food, and gear up to feed the rapidly increasing number of seniors in Orange County.

The good news is that we’ve seen the number of hungry people trending downward. This is likely a combination of an improving economy and the impact that our food distribution, enabled by generous donors like you, is having on people’s lives. When we give our needy neighbors a hand up, we help them create productive and sustainable lives for themselves and their families. We’re very optimistic that we can achieve our Bold Goal of ending hunger – especially when we have a great partner like Harvesters supporting us.

So let’s redouble our efforts and push through together to reach our Bold Goal of creating a world in which no one goes hungry. Ever.

Your partner,

BOLD GOAL.BIG DREAMS.

The Harvesters’ support reaches those in need in Orange County via Second Harvest’s vast network of hundreds of community partners throughout the county including: church and school pantries, homeless shelters, senior centers, soup kitchens, and homes for abused women and children.

Those served include the working poor, children, seniors on fixed incomes, single parents, veterans, the disabled, the homeless, and individuals experiencing medical emergencies or recent job layoffs.

The knowledge that your generosity can truly make a difference inspires Harvesters and our benevolent partners to continue supporting these amazing programs; programs that seek to end hunger in our community; programs that we hope will create a future in which no one goes hungry. Ever.

HARVESTERS SPECIAL FUNDThe Harvesters Special Fund is designed to answer immediate, pressing needs at Second Harvest Food Bank. Beginning in 2004, Harvesters have identified and raised crucial funding for specific, urgent needs that include capital equipment and programs which allow the food bank to provide wholesome food to 200,000 children, seniors, and families every month.

Founding Harvester Teddie Ray has been instrumental in spearheading the Harvesters Special Fund every year. It is with heartfelt gratitude that we thank her, and all of our Special Fund underwriters, for their generous contributions to help end hunger in Orange County.

60MOBILE PANTRY STOPS PER MONTH

In the most underserved Orange County neighborhoods, Second Harvest’s two refrigerated vehicles deliver fresh produce and staple items to up to 300 families at each location, and as many as 100,800 families every year.

CHILD HUNGER STRATEGY PROGRAMSSecond Harvest’s commitment to ending childhood hunger is evident through the varied program models and methods of reaching children in need. The Kids Cafe Program, which provides a healthy and delicious after school meal to children at 42 locations, provided 352,971 meals in 2016, and serves up to 1,700 children in need daily.

The Permanent School Pantry in the Lincoln Elementary School in Anaheim reached 1,500 children in need last year and provided the equivalent of 213,036 meals to the surrounding community. The second location at El Sol Science and Arts Academy opened in April 2017. Second Harvest’s Bold Goal plan calls for the opening of four more Permanent School Pantries by 2021.

YOUR UNDER WRIT ING DOLLARS GO DIRECTLY TO HELP THOSE IN NEEDBUT THE NEED IS ST ILL GREAT (CONTINUED)

SENIOR GROCERYIn 2016, Second Harvest focused on the growing older adult community and how to serve them best. When they conducted a program evaluation of the Brown Bag program, which provided non-perishable foods twice per month at 37 locations, they discovered that seniors in need would prefer perishables: fresh, wholesome food, like meat, dairy, deli, and produce. Second Harvest redesigned the program to offer a just-in-time fresh delivery of high-quality items including all the things everyone loves to get at the market, such as eggs, milk, chicken, produce and more.

Attendance at our first pilot site nearly tripled, from 21 seniors attending our Brown Bag Program, to 61 seniors attending our Senior Grocery Program. Seniors love the choices and the options for fresh food. We currently have 33 Senior Grocery Partners and hope to expand to 40 locations, including Senior Centers, churches, non-profits, and low-income senior apartments, by the end of this year.

Last year, our Senior Grocery Program provided the equivalent of 1,057,643 meals to 3,217 seniors in need.

26SCHOOL PANTRIES

The School Pantry Program currently provides fresh produce and other healthy choices using a “farmer’s market” style distribution at 26 low-income schools in Orange County. Last year, the program served 3,972 families and 9,881 children with 796,647 meals.

6,434BAGS OF GROCERIES PER MONTH

Food, shelter or medication? That’s the agonizing decision too many Orange County seniors must make every month. Their Social Security disbursement doesn’t go far enough. Without receiving two bags of nutritious groceries every month, more than 3,500 seniors would go hungry.
