SICK aND IN OUr THOUGHTSPlease remember the following members and their families in your daily prayers. If

you have time, give them a call or drop them a note.

GraND KNIGHT’S MESSaGEThere but for the grace of God go I Merry Christmas to you my friends! Christmas is a time for us to be with our

family, count our blessings and try not to take what we have for granted. All while creating this magical bubble around our children for them to enjoy the season.

We will as we do every year host a council Christmas party on the 18th in the Main Hall. This is a small way for the council officers to say thank you to every family that has helped our church, and our community through the various charitable activities we run year round. The party is free and open to all EDW families. Please come and enjoy the live caroling! We will have door prizes, raffle off some baskets of cheer as well as a 50/50 drawing to aid AFAC. As we

do every year we ask you to please bring nonperishable items to donate to AFAC, the Arlington Food Assistance Center.

We, unfortunately, have a need to step up and aid an Arlington family. By now everyone has heard of the tragedy that has struck a neighbor of ours. Mary and Bill Barkes’ home caught fire in November in the middle of the night. The mother, Mary, and one of their daughters, Emily, perished in the flames. The father, Bill, was able to use a ladder and rescue their other daughter, Sarah. Sadly, Sarah is suf-fering with 3rd degree burns on her hands and burns to her arms and her face. The ongoing medical care that she will need will be intensive.

To help Bill and his daughter, Sarah we have placed jars inside the mansion and in the club office for donations. We will be asking for a $10 suggested donation at the door for the Christmas party. Also, during the party we will live auction two tickets to two Capitals hockey games and to two Wiz-ards basketball games. The seats for these games are in section 219! Finally, we will live auction an autographed Capitals Hockey jersey!

Please find it in your heart to aid the Barkes family. St. Miguel de la Mora de la Mora, martyr from council 2140, please pray for and guide us. John White 73rd Grand Knight

PrOTECTING WIDOWS – a FOUNDING GOalAs a member of this council, you know how important spouses can be to the charitable works of

the Order. If you’re married, your wife is probably involved in a few of the many events that happen each fraternal year. This support adds great value and impact to what a council can achieve.

When the Order was founded in 1882, Father Michael J. McGivney and the other brave men were setting out to protect Catholic families, but especially wives and children. Today, we remain committed to this mission by offering insurance products and fraternal benefits designed with that goal in mind. One specific policy rider that you may not know about is called Spousal Waiver of Premium. This rider is unique to the Knights of Columbus philosophy of helping our widows.

This rider is available on most permanent and Discoverer plans purchased at standard rates by a member and his wife on the same day. When both spouses apply, the rider provides for waiver of premiums on the spouse’s contract in the event of the insured’s death. Best of all, for members and spouses ages 18 to 60, this waiver can be added for no charge. The rider stays in effect until the spouse attains age 65 or certain other triggering events occur.

Our products are designed with your needs and budget in mind. With a solid portfolio of life insur-ance, long-term care, disability income and retirement products, the Knights of Columbus can help you meet all of your financial goals. To learn more about these solutions, contact us today.

rETIrEES The tenets of being a Retiree: Eventually you will reach a

point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it. The older we get, the fewer things seem worth wait-ing for. We gather every Wednesday in the Council Home to brag about our ages and to have lunch. This lunch is worth the time. Our Christmas buffet luncheon will be on December 17. There will be no Retirees on Dec 24th or 31st.

Quote of the Month: “Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Whatever you want to do, do it now. There are only so many tomorrows.” Venerable Pope Paul VI

A merry, blessed Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year to all. Please pray for all of our Brothers and their families especially our sick retirees.

Greetings! Halloween and Thanksgiving are over, and Christmas is right around the corner! Time sure flies when you are having fun. That’s what we like to do here at LUK – have fun!!! I want to welcome two new LUK fun members – Alison Broadbent and Maria Montoya.

I hope you found time to stop by the 11th Annual Halloween Party. The Old Council Home was decorated spectacularly and the costumes, as always, were fantastic. Everyone had a blast mingling with old friends, checking out costumes, and dancing to the fantastic music of Shakedown. At midnight, an esteemed panel of judges selected the winners of the Annual costume contest. Winning costumes included the following: Ronald Reagan, Booby Trap, Zombie Radiologist with a Mobile Mammogram, The Incredibles, Midnight Firefly Fairy, and Mother Nature.

I want to thank everyone that helped to make this party a success by decorating, setting up, cooking food, bartending, dressing up, and cleaning up. Special thanks to the Peter Silano and the Columbus Club for organizing the movement of decorations and wall hangings and donating food and prizes. As I always say, many hands make light work. Once again, we proved that LUK, EDW, and the Columbus Club make a great team.

Thanks to everyone that donated a turkey or helped with the An-nual Thanksgiving event. Special thanks to Marijo and Thom Galvin, who pour their heart and soul into organizing this wonderful event.

Save the Date! LUK is having their annual Christmas Tree Deco-rating event on Saturday, November 29 beginning at 7:00 p.m. As always, we are having a “pot luck” get together to kick off the Christmas season. This is a family event, so please bring your children to help with the decorations. Please bring a Christmas ornament to spruce up the tree and a snack to share.

Save the Date! LUK is having its annual Christmas party meet-ing on Thursday, December 4 at 7:30. All LUK members (past and present), friends of LUK, and potential new members are welcome to attend. Everyone who wants to participate in the Christmas gift exchange is asked to bring a wrapped gift worth $20. Please bring a snack (hors d’ouvre or dessert) to share. This is a great meeting for potential members to attend.

Please join Ladies U-Knighted in wishing a very happy birthday to me, your LUK Vice President, Jo Wood (Dec 24). Merry Christmas to all!

The Virginia Knights of Columbus Charities, Inc. (VKCCI) carries out the first principle of our order, “Charity.” VKCCI helps support those citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia who are unable to provide support for themselves or their family members, and have exhausted all other av-enues of relief. Donations from you enable us to continue to give that financial assistance to those who have no other place to turn. From July 1, 1994 to June 30, 2012 VKCCI has given 672 grants totaling over $1,041,5277.

In addition to donations from individuals, councils, and assemblies, donations are welcome from any association, cor-poration, partnership, trust, foundation, or other organization.

HONOr FlIGHT As the Honor Flights and the veterans continue to

enjoy lunch or dinner on our campus, we wanted to share some comments from a recent dinner where 200 WWII veterans were served. These events are done at zero to very little cost to us. Donations from Honor Flight families throughout the U.S. and EDW Knights cover the costs to allow us to continue this patriotic ef-fort. Not to mention the many volunteers from EDW, friends and neighborhood families who show up, cheer, shake hands and feed the veterans and their escorts!

Hello our Knights of Columbus Friends,Just poppin in to say once again “THANKS” so much

for a family friendly, fun atmosphere and most excel-lent turkey dinner and apple pie -- best seen to date. You guys do such an amazing job of taking care of our veterans and we love coming there for dinner.

We had had a very long day and it was so nice to have a very relaxing, yummy dinner to end our first day.

We so appreciated the playing of the service songs and singing them with each other and paying homage during the playing of Taps. Well done!

Jerry Garren, FS, PGK2015 Dues We are planning to mail dues notices in the first week

of December. Please keep an eye out for your notice in your mailbox and remember to pay promptly, as we are assessed for all members…regardless if they pay their dues. Regular Member’s dues will be $132 this year; Honorary Member’s dues will be $85; and, Honorary Life Member’s dues will be $60 (Columbus Club dues only).

On-Line PaymentIt’s finally a reality…we now can accept credit cards

for dues payments on our website!!! We accept Visa, MasterCard and even American Express. Please under-stand that credit card transactions cost money to process and that we need to add a small fee to dues credit card transactions to help offset the cost. You can find the link to our “storefront” to make your dues payment, make certain contributions and even purchase your New Year’s Eve tickets on our main web page, www.kofcedw2473.org.

When you visit, you might notice the storefront looks a little primitive. Rest assured it is as secure as any other website you might do business with. Payments made through the website will save me A LOT of process-ing time and should make it much easier for me to get your 2015 card to you. We will be working on making it “prettier” over the coming year.

If you encounter any issues with the website, please drop me an email at [email protected] and I will check into the issue for you.

KOVAR and the Combined Federal CampaignIt’s that time of the year again. All Federal employ-

ees are reminded that it is VERY easy to support the Virginia KOVAR charity through regular payroll de-ductions made possible through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Please remember that EDW can receive credit for your contributions when you provide a copy of your pledge sheet to me. Thank you for your generous support.

Merry Christmas!!! Remember, Christ is the reason for the season!!! May God bless each and every one of you and your families.

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Erik Koons is one of our quieter members who doesn’t

run a committee or head up an event so I understand if you read his name and say “who?”

Erik has been an invaluable part of EDW since his family joined the Knights of Columbus in 2011. The Koons can often be found at the pool in the summer months as well as at various volunteer events especially the Honor Flight meals. Those are very good and worthy commitments on Erik and his family’s part, however, Erik has also been serving as the Columbus Club’s pro bono attorney. In this position Erik, and his D.C. firm, Baker Botts, where he’s a partner, has assisted the club by providing legal advice on numerous issues. Most recently, he successfully guided us through a dispute involving a contractor’s parking agreement with the club.

For all Erik has done and continues to do for the club and EDW we thank you, Erik, and will contribute a gift to St. Agnes.

NarraTIVEPrOPOSED 2015 BUDGET

COlUMBUS ClUB OF arlINGTON INC.Tom Maguire (Treasurer)

Greg Strizek (Assistant Treasurer)

Enclosed in this December Knight Life is the Columbus Club, Inc. proposed 2015 Budget for the review of Council members pursuant to the By-Laws, Article V Section 7. This budget will be presented at the annual meeting of the Corporation, which will be held January 8, 2015 for member-ship approval. The following table presents a 5-year portrait of corporate income and expenses compared with our 2014 and 2015 budget to give you as members our financial history.

The budget was prepared for the October 28, 2014 board meeting. At this time the latest financial information available was the year to date (YTD) September profit and loss statements. To compare the 2014 profit and loss with prior years on a simi-lar basis, a trailing 12 month (T-12) profit and loss statement was generated. The T-12 profit and loss statement includes the profit and loss for October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014.

The September 2014 T-12 statement shows total income of $1,904,359, which is $137,524 (7.78%) over the 2013 total income of $1,766,835. The majority of this increase in revenue is the result of increased pool, camp, and parking income. The in-crease in pool and camp income can be attributed to increased fees. The increase in the parking revenue is the result of the settlement with the construction company who rented the parking lot during the Yorktown High School renovation. Together, the pool, camp, and parking income accounted for $131,708 of the $137,524 increase in total income.

While it appears that the total cost of sales decreased $41,967 from 2013 to the September 2014 T-12 annualized profit and loss statement, the “Other Cost of Sales” is now expensed as “Supplies Food Service”, instead of being deducted from the cost of sales. The September 2014 T-12 “Supplies

Food Service expense is $29,722. The result of this change decreased the total cost of sales by $29,722, as compared to 2013, and increased the expenses by $29,722, as compared to 2013. On an “apples-to-apples” comparison, the total cost of sales decreased by $12,245.

The September 2014 T-12 profit and loss state-ment lists total expenses of $1,429,841 or $28,751 more than the 2013 expenses of $1,401,090. Overall, the September 2014 trailing 12 month expenses are similar to the 2013 expenses.

The Proposed 2015 Budget conservatively proj-ects total income of $1,857,692. Overall income projections are based on T-12 income or conserva-tive increases over the T-12 income with the excep-tion of the parking income. The monthly parking income from the current contract with Arlington County Public Schools is $2,000. This contract expires in June 2015. Therefore, the budgeted 2015 parking income is only $12,000.

The 2015 budgeted total cost of sales is $313,000 or $11,377 (3.77%) higher than the September 2014 trailing 12 month total cost of sales.

The 2015 budget includes total expenses of $1,442,031, as compared to the September 2014 T-12 expenses of $1,429,841. The 2015 budget and the two corresponding tables detail on a line by line the projected expenses for 2015. The first table lists some of the expenses that we incur on a daily basis that are aggregated under “Other”. The second table “Real Estate, Payroll Taxes and Insurance” details the real estate taxes, pay taxes, insurance expense, and other taxes and licenses expense.

The 2015 budget projects Total Income of $102,661. These funds will be used to make $49,784 in principal payments on the Club’s loan from Chain Bridge Bank and to replenish or repay previous advances to the parking reserve account.

As of December 31, 2014, the outstanding loan balance on the loan from Chain Bridge Bank will be $97,656. This loan is scheduled to be paid in full on November 1, 2016.
