Letter From the Outgoing and Incoming Chair

Richard Roth, Incoming Chair

Richard Roth, Incoming Chair

It is true that two years pass by so quickly, and yet it is amazing how much can be done in that time period. When the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation started its most recent transition of leadership, there were some very specific goals set out by the board and incoming chair that helped guide our ongoing evolution as a unique and innovative community fundraising organization.

Over three decades ago, the Foundation was created as the vehicle to receive and shepherd endowment capital with the ultimate goal of sustaining, in perpetuity, the vital agencies and programs that serve our community. That mission and overriding purpose is as true today as it was then. We are fortunate to live in a community where the spirit of philanthropy is so prevalent, and the idea of tikkun olam (repairing the world) resonates so deeply with so many. As an organization committed to ensuring that meaningful philanthropy is encouraged and supported, we are constantly looking to expand the ways in which we interact with the Jewish community.

Over the past 24 months, there were three main strategies of central focus undertaken by the Board and various committees. Firstly, we initiated the Collaborative Fundraising Model (CFM), together with the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, as a way to place the needs and objectives of our donors at the forefront of Jewish philanthropy in Ottawa. Secondly, we looked to broaden the OJCF’s reach and scope, ensuring that donors of all means, ages and interests are able to participate in OJCF activities. Finally, we started to build the Foundation, through our involvement with the Create a Jewish Legacy Forums and the 21/64 Initiative, to ensure that we actively participate in the impending inter-generational transfer of wealth.

As we prepare to move forward into a new term of leadership for the OJCF, it is clear that many of the initiatives started two years ago will remain priorities and continue as part of the important work we do on behalf of the community. The CFM will be enhanced as we continue to act collaboratively with the Federation to ensure that donors needs and wishes are fully realized. We remain committed to expand the reach of the OJCF to all corners of our community, in particular focusing on the advancement of women’s philanthropy through our recently established Women’s Collective Endowment Fund. Engaging the next generation of philanthropists also remains a high priority, and we will make sure that their seat at our community table remains open and welcoming.

In addition, we are looking ahead at other initiatives, in order to help us grow and evolve even further. The idea that we can all – each and every one of us– create our own personal Jewish legacy will be strongly addressed over the coming years, challenging members of our community to stand up and count themselves among the many visionaries who started and supported the Foundation’s growth. We encourage you all to watch for announcements in the near future to see how you can play your part in these exciting initiatives.

Beyond the outreach efforts we will create and continue to implement, we will continue to look inwards to improve our own operations, by initiating reviews of our strategic plan and investment policy and procedures. In order to remain innovative and transparent, regular reviews such as these are vital for community organizations, and we look forward to sharing the findings and results of these actions with you all. We would like to thank all donors, board and committee members, and other members of the community for your support of the OJCF over the past few years, and we thank you in advance for your ongoing support as we move forward. Your participation in all of our activities allows us to fulfil our mandate, ensuring that the OJCF remains strong and that our future is filled with security and promise.

“As an organization, we are committed to ensuring that meaningful philanthropy is

encouraged and supported.”

“The idea that we can all – each and every one of us– create our own

coming years.”

Create A Jewish Legacy – a promise for the future

George Joseph Cooper Scholarship AwardThe George Joseph Cooper Scholarship Award is a prestigious scholarship grant awarded annually to a chosen recipient selected by the Scholarship Committee through an application/nomination process. The scholarship was established in 2006 by the generosity of a donor, George Cooper, who left a substantial bequest to the OJCF for the purpose of supporting an outstanding individual between the age of 18 and 30 in furthering their post secondary education or apprenticeship in the artistic, literary or social sciences.

To date, five recipients have been privileged with receiving the G.J. Cooper Scholarship Award. The OJCF has awarded a total of $69,864 in scholarships since the inception of the program (2006-2010).

The 2010 scholarship recipient, Adam Moscoe, received a grant in the amount of $13,029 formally presented to him at the OJCF Annual General Meeting in June 2011. An undergraduate student pursuing a BA in psychology at the University of Ottawa, Adam has consistently displayed a sense of responsibility towards community enhancement within the Jewish and general community of Ottawa. As an active leader on campus – both at home and as part of the national student group - Adam has worked diligently to promote social justice, Holocaust education, interfaith dialogue and support for Israel. Whether working as a volunteer for organizations like Tamir or the Ottawa Food Bank, Adam embodies the spirit that young adults care deeply about their community, all while pursuing excellence in education.

Previous award recipients were: Hannah Mayne (2009), a graduate level student in Anthropology; Davina Finn (2008), an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Science; Diana Cohen Reiss (2007), a doctoral candidate writing a thesis on Jewish immigration in Ottawa; and Ariel Goldberg (2006), an aspiring writer and Jewish educator. Complete scholarship details are available on our website at www.OJCF.ca.

The goal of “Create a Jewish Legacy” is to help show you how simple and meaningful it can be to leave a charitable legacy. By leaving a bequest or other planned gift, you can extend your commitment to the Jewish community well into the future - making a difference in the lives of generations yet to come. Your gift can act as an expression of trust in future community leaders and a way for you to be there whenever help is needed.

If you have a particular area of interest, such as Jewish cultural arts or emergency assistance for Jewish families in financial distress, we can help you design a plan that identifies potential beneficiaries that are best suited to carry out your wishes. The options are limited only by your creativity.

Creating your Jewish legacy does not only focus on cash gifts today. It also builds on your pledge to our community - a promise to leave a deferred gift (bequest, life insurance) - one that is planned today and realized after your lifetime. Your Jewish legacy can reflect everything that is most important and meaningful to you and your family.

When should you give? • The time is always right to think about how you wish to be remembered. • There’s no time to start like the present. A donor can be any age; give any amount, use most any asset and achieve personal, financial and philanthropic goals through a bequest.

Give the Gift of a LifetimeCharitable Bequests

Your commitment to the Jewish community is evident in every-thing you do and you can make a difference in the lives of others without significantly affecting your financial well-being or that of your heirs.

Including the OJCF in your will can be a very gratifying, thoughtful and simple way to leave a legacy, knowing that you are contributing to the community agencies that are ensuring our Jewish values and heritage are kept alive forever. It just requires planning!

A Charitable Bequest can take many forms and with a little planning and guidance, we can assist you in tailoring your financial and estate planning goals to meet your specific interests and needs that fit within your means.

It’s up to you! Your gift will keep our Jewish Community strong and vital for generations while continuously helping to change the world.

To learn more about how you can make the “gift of a lifetime”, contact us at 613.798.4696 ext. 248, email [email protected] or visit www.OJCF.ca.

The Growing Power of Women’s Philanthropy

Collaboration Puts All The Pieces Together!

Adam Moscoe

Jewish women are becoming increasingly prominent in the world of philanthropy on their own accord, and we can no longer assume that they will automatically associate with their spouses or families when it comes to their philanthropic pursuits. More and more, they are particularly interested in supporting select causes and organizations that speak to their interests and passions.

The Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation has committed to offer support and resources to the growing population of influential women philanthropists. During the past year, a new committee was formed to help inspire women to fulfil their personal philanthropic potential and raise funds in support of women’s, children’s and family issues.

Looking forward, the committee is dedicated to empower women as leaders, funders, and decision makers so that they may become catalysts for communal change. With the establishment of a collective fund within the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, every woman – regardless of her age or income level – will have the ability to effect change in a meaningful and personal way.

Through the Women’s Collective Endowment Fund, the committee seeks to bring about social change by supporting initiatives that strive to expand and improve upon opportunities and choices in the lives of women and children. Together, we can strengthen the Jewish value of tikkun olam – repairing the world.

Over the past decades, the Jewish community of Ottawa has experienced vibrant growth, creating an exciting community of individuals, families and organizations. As we have grown, so too have the needs of our community. In response, the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Ottawa have accepted the challenge to ensure that we remain supportive of the various needs which exist today and those that will exist in years to come. These growing needs in our local and global Jewish communities, coupled with our donors’ wishes to plan and structure their gifts in different ways, require a new way of thinking.

The Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Ottawa, have committed ourselves to a new and creative partnership – the Collaborative Fundraising Model - that builds on our collective expertise regarding philanthropy and community development, to ensure that the philanthropic objectives of our donors are fulfilled in meaningful ways.

The leadership of the Foundation and Federation are pooling their respective resources with the goal of meeting our donors’ personal objectives, presenting giving opportunities and strategies that match our donors’ desires with our community’s needs. Working in partnership, we can help build and implement a vision that achieves our collective philanthropic goals.

Together, we can accomplish great things. As we further develop a sense of innovation regarding philanthropy in our community, the Collaborative Fundraising Model will allow us to collectively fulfil our communal needs and strive to achieve our communal dreams.

Jewish Education through Torah (JET)

With a percentage of the 2010 income, our endowment funds provided funding to Jewish Education through Torah (JET) in the amount of $19,020, supporting this agency’s programs for the benefit of the community.

JET is dedicated to providing Jewish education and inspiration to adults and families, by offering a wide variety of classes, lectures, and unique programs, reaching out to hundreds of Jews in Ottawa from all backgrounds on a regular basis.

Your generous financial support helps JET service the community and here are just a few examples:

A target group created for young couples otherwise not connected to a Jewish network to meet others like themselves has been created, attracting over 25 couples who attend a variety of events.

JET’s Israel trip program for women has already had a major impact with 2 families deciding to send their children to day school and other families joining synagogues for the first time.

JET’s young professional program provides young Jewish adults with meaningful Jewish experiences on a weekly basis.

Saul and Edna Goldfarb B’nai Mitzvah Club - our future leaders in philanthropy

Teens that are shaping our future one gift at a time!

The B’nai Mitzvah Club was established and founded in 2000 by community philanthropists Saul and the late Edna Goldfarb to assist teens of Bar and Bat mitzvah age and older in their journey of becoming philanthropists and community leaders through the lifelong habits of tzedakah.

The Goldfarb’s grant program makes it possible for all teens to establish a fund in their name to support local Jewish agencies of their choice by contributing a minimum of $250 or more and the Saul and Edna Goldfarb B’nai Mitzvah Fund will match the contribution up to $1000.

Elizabeth Greenberg Shmuel Prizant Noah Zelikovitz

2010 Grantmaking Statistics: • $7,272 was distributed to 23 different beneficiary agencies from B’nai Mitzvah Funds • Club members supported 33 programs within the 23 agencies • 95% of the allocated money went to Jewish agencies and causes • 49.1% of the B’nai Mitzvah grants supported community services such as JFS, Tamir, Hillel Lodge, SJCC and JFO.

Inspired through her love of music and drama

In anticipation of Elizabeth Greenberg’s Bat Mitzvah, she and her parents Leanne and Jeff decided to open a B’nai Mitzvah fund in her name.

When Jewish youth in Ottawa experience this wonderful right of passage to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, opening a B’nai Mitzvah Fund is a great way for them to have an impact on the present and future of their community.

Elizabeth has been taking music lessons since she was two year olds and this passion is what inspires her to support the music and drama program at her school. “I love music, so it seemed like a perfect fit to combine what I love to do with my school”, says Elizabeth.

“I look forward to many years of giving”, replied Elizabeth as she designates the money accrued from her fund annually to community agencies of her choosing. “I established a fund because I want to be able to give to my community”, says Elizabeth.

“It is exciting to be able to do this through my own fund and I feel so lucky to have this opportunity. “

Ottawa Torah Center Chabad

With a percentage of the 2010 income, our endowment funds provided funding to OTC in the amount of $10,669, supporting this agency’s programs for the benefit of the community.

Ottawa Torah Center (OTC) provides innovative family programs centered around the Jewish Holidays most often offered in a secular, public and non-threatening environment. The meaningful activities engage unaffiliated and intermarried Jews and provide a positive low pressure way of meeting the organized Jewish community.

Your generous financial support helps OTC service the community and more specifically the Jewish Holidays Awareness and Outreach Activities. These programs are about taking Judaism to public venues where people are, and providing them with non-threatening and exciting educational activities and social programs for the entire family.

With your support, this agency was able to:

Create a connection with our heritage while providing a venue to people to socialize and meet with other Jews.

Allow for holiday celebration while spending quality time bonding and strengthening the family unit.

Establish successful programs with an average of 250 people that participate on each holiday.

The Art of Giving

18

The Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation was proud to host Charles Bronfman and Jeffrey Solomon as the keynote speakers for its first community event on Thursday, October 14, 2010.

Authors of the book entitled “The Art of Giving: Where the Soul Meets A Business Plan”, Mr. Bronfman and Mr. Solomon demonstrated through compelling argument and amusing personal anecdote how truly impactful philanthropy can be achieved when donors are aware of their personal motivations and combine them with thoughtfully mapped out business plans.

Together, our guest speakers brought their impressive experience as leading thinkers in the world of philanthropy to our community, and their message was appreciated and resonated with everyone in attendance; whether they were current or aspiring philanthropists, fundraisers and non-profit professionals, or anyone who was simply looking to make their philanthropic efforts meaningful and impactful.

The lessons learned that evening included, but were certainly not limited to: • Enhancing philanthropic connections by learning how to strategize your own giving plans• Understanding trends in modern-day philanthropy and how they can help every individual achieve their personal goals • How to find and support the organizations that

will mean the most to you and your family• Finding the passion in your philanthropic choices and actions

My Legacy Starts Here When you picture the community decades from now, what do you see? Consider organizations and causes you are involved with today. Why have you chosen to philanthropically invest in them with your gifts of money and time? What have been your most significant gifts and which have provided you with the most satisfaction? By creating your Jewish legacy, you can ensure that the organizations that are most important to you and your family will thrive in perpetuity and the issues you are most concerned with continue to be addressed.

The Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation knows that taking care of family, from generation to generation, is something we need to plan. We invite you to visit our website in order to better connect with and serve our Jewish community.
