In 2007, I got enrolled at the “Universidad de Monterrey”

(Udem) in Monterrey, Mexico; being creditor of an

academic scholarship. In 2009, while I was still a student,

I started working as an architect assistant at “Avit 300”.

Then, in 2010, I was invited by the architect David Picazo

to work in his office: “Picazo Arquitectos”. In 2012, I

got my degree in architecture and joined “Oficina de

Arquitectura”, where I worked for three years. Finally,

in 2015, I moved abroad to Beijing to work at “Picazo

Arquitectos China”.

I consider myself a very dedicated, motivated and hard-

working person. I get involved in everything I do with

high enthusiasm and implication. I set ambitious goals

in order to give the best of me in every moment.

The design challenge in this intervention consisted in modifying the existing layout of the house so it would influence a contemporary lifestyle on its owners. The priority was to let the main areas have as much space as possible.

The social area should be simple and clean. A rectangular shape is determined by the encased bookcase, the stone wall, and two large windows overlooking the patios. This way, the interior and the exterior spaces merge into one.

Page 14: Oscar Mena - Portfolio 2015

The encased bookcase and the kitchen furniture were designed as a single

unit that covers the entire wall.

The bathrooms and the private areas are very colorful, while the social area is

mostly white so that the wooden and stone textures can stand out with the

brightness of the room.

The roof of the house is left as a terrace so that its owners can enjoy the view

of the surrounding mountains.

The residential cluster consists of eight blocks with a total of 161 residences. The houses were designed with two or three levels and up to eight different façade variations. The architectural and materi-al quality of the houses is contemporary and respond to its context.

By setting the project standards, numerous variations were made possible, while keeping an overall balance and consistency in the design; thus enhancing the efficiency in the construction of the houses.

Amenity spaces were provided along with a playground to the west. Land-

scape design helped to create a sense of community and commitment to the

complex.

In order to avoid repetition on the façades, the design of the houses makes it

possible to flip their plan.

DISA TOWER03

26

Page 27: Oscar Mena - Portfolio 2015

Tenerife, Spain

The competition consisted in the design of a 21-story high office tower to become the headquarters of the Disa group in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands.

As part of the competition, it was required to design the master plan with an underground parking area for 520 vehicles, an outdoor plaza to become a main public space for the city. It also required the design of retail and office amenities spread on a three-floor po-dium, and three different residential blocks to accommodate medi-um to high end residential accommodation.

The proposed scheme is a response to the current urban grid, where pedestri-

ans are the priority and the new public spaces become “breathing spaces” for

the city. The offices and the retail amenities are distributed along the three-

floor podium. Access ramps, bridges and escalators allow visitors to move

around the scheme freely. These not only provide access between the differ-

ent floors and spaces, but also become viewing platforms where visitors can

enjoy the views of the city and the newly designed public square. Stores and

outdoor terraces are strategically located along the organic master plan, so

they bring a sense of life and movement to the whole scheme.

The structure of the tower consists of a reinforced concrete core with circular

columns around its perimeter, allowing the arrangement of open-plan offices.

There are 9 slab shapes set on different orientations to function as a sustain-

able strategy to the local climate.

The overhangs created by the slab shapes shade de level below and give the

tower its organic look and striking presence. The balconies created by these

overhangs could be used as outdoor meeting spaces, as well as viewing plat-

forms to enjoy a 360 degree view of the city.

The Project is located on a mountain inside the “Deportivo Alpino Chipinque” country club. In order to arrive to the site, it is necessary to travel along a half-kilometer trail. It can be traveled by foot or by golf kart.

On the way up, one can distinguish a volume that emerges from the site and finally observe the entire building.

The restaurant is located besides the practice tee. The purpose of the project

is that the clients can enjoy food services while practicing golf, without need-

ing to descend to the other amenities of the club. The main idea of the con-

cept is to enjoy the view of the city while using the amenities.

The project consists of three levels connected by an external stone staircase,

appearing as if it were emerging from the mountain itself.

The ground floor has a service area where users can rent golf equipment. The

entrance to the bar and restaurant is located on the first floor. On the upper

level there is a green terrace with a panoramic view.

Considering the project’s location, the façades are left open so that the users

can enjoy the unobstructed view as well as the fresh air.

This parking building plays a fundamental role in a master plan for the “Deportivo Alpino Chipinque” country club, since it required the extension of its previous parking capacity.

With an area of 6,700 m2 distributed along 10 levels, it can hold up to 168 vehicles, leaving 39 m2 for each one.

The Project focuses on minimizing the formal problem that a conventional parking structure would face: The imposition of a big volume with a monotonous façade.

A transparent membrane was proposed for the northern façade, which is the

most related to the access to the facilities. It consisted of a suspended plane

composed of steel mesh panels used with a double purpose: The protection

of the users, and a support structure to allow the growth of vegetation, creat-

ing a green screen.

This element creates a visual language that relates to the mountain’s imme-

diate context.

The building’s structure appeals to the economy. It uses a foundation system

based on concrete slabs that receive the columns and the steel beams, opti-

mizing the spans.

This structure supports the prefabricated alveolar section concrete slabs and

ramps. The walls on the lower levels were covered with local stones, while

the ones in upper levels were left with a cement plaster finish.

The building’s most notorious element is the external membrane on the south-

ern and western façades. This substructure holds a line of potted plants which

have managed to cover it completely in a short time, thus reducing the mas-

sive presence of the building.

The proposal is simple: amplify to its maximum the pedestrian dedicated surface. By doing so, the flow conditions should improve in the busiest pedestrian node of the university.

The circular pergola that covers the big vehicular crater, provides shade and protection for the users by separating the vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian lanes. This elements also becomes an urban reference that articulates the visual axis and the different flows, expanding its area of influence to the scale of urban infrastructure.

The site has an undoubtable commercial value due to its location. This

intervention pretends to maximize its value by providing spaces that would

work as terraces. The presence of publicity isn’t ignored. On the contrary, it

is organized and presented as a canopy with more visibility and commercial

value. This volume could later host a mixed use building.

The orientation of the corridor is favorable according to the sun’s path.

Continuous shaded areas are provided by the existing buildings. In order to

improve this benefit, their height is proposed to grow by temporarily placing

a vertical structure to host publicity on the top of these existing one-level

buildings; which in a near future, could grow to tree-level mixed use buildings.

Masterplan / Plan maestro

54

Page 55: Oscar Mena - Portfolio 2015

The purpose of the project is to recover and occupy pedestrian space. This

operation requires wider sidewalks and an esplanade where people can move

and rest. The existing inefficient parking space is reconfigured so that there’s

a minimal functional parking area away from the pedestrian area.

55

Page 56: Oscar Mena - Portfolio 2015

56

Page 57: Oscar Mena - Portfolio 2015

A cycling route marks the limits of the esplanade area and connects the en-

trance of the university, circulating under the pergola. The sidewalk that cross-

es Garza Sada Avenue is widened and protected from the vehicles by simple

surface operations. He pavement marks and identifies the new territory gained

on the vehicular infrastructure in favor of pedestrian mobility.

The “Tree house” is divided into public and private areas based on a single fragmented volume separated into two parts, each one with its own slope. There is a succession of platforms whose character varies both in the material used, as well as in the natural interven-tion.

The house encloses a central patio with a large tree and private ter-race.

It has two levels. The access level is above and it’s divided into a social side,

with the living room and the kitchen, and a private side, with a bedroom and

a terrace. This exterior of this level is covered with galvanized steel sheets.

Brick was used on the lower level as a finish for the walls. On this level , the

laundry room and a study are located to one side, while the main bedroom is

placed between the central patio and the backyard.

The shape of the house is a product of the relationship between the object,

the altered plot itself, and the surrounding area.

The project’s orientation protects it form solar gain and provides a view of the

nearby trees and the surrounding hills. It has an interior-exterior relationship.

The form is closed to de outside and open to the inside with large windows

that allow natural light to flood the entrance area.

“Moll del Valle” is a building located in one of the city’s most exclu-sive areas. It is a 13-story tower with offices and businesses.

The project consisted in doing a complete redesign of the external facade of the building in order to reduce its thermal gain and give it a contemporary look.

The solution was to implement a double crystal panel façade which would work as a solar barrier. It was decided to divide the building’s geometry into two volumes to emphasize its verticality.

Taking into account the limitations and requirements of the project, the design of the “Pabellón los Arquitectos” pavilion parted from a circle and its spatial virtues. The connection between points and lines create surfaces which also generate a space.

The main goal was to submerge the users into a rich, varied sensa-tional experience inside and outside the pavilion. This was achieved by a natural walkthrough provided by its spatiality which adapts to its main function by generating exhibition and conference areas. The play of solids and voids on the walls of the pavilions, which also merge with its cover, provide an internal-external relationship by allowing light and wind to go through it.

The second goal was to design an adaptable system to be assembled and

placed in different places and conditions. The pavilion’s structure works effi-

ciently to support the cover, which is developed through the fragmentation

of a surface generating triangular planes which could be made out of recycled

canvas or prefabricated panels.

The final outcome responds to its function, the efficiency in construction and

sustainability; all key concepts in any architectural project.

Cover – It’s intended to use recycled canvas from billboards or prefabricated

cement panels to create the cover. The use of these elements could be partial

or total.

Structure – Anchored to the platform, the wooden ribs are the only structural

elements for the cover. They are light, detachable and easy to handle.

Platform – The platform is divided in medium-density fiberboard panels. Its

modulation makes it easy to transport and handle.

Platform structure – It consists of metal anchorages that articulate the beams

The approach for this Project is radical, identifying the opportunity to turn a historic piece of hydraulic infrastructure into an environ-mental regeneration mechanism with metropolitan impact.

The strategy of turning the tank’s cover into a great garden – pre-pared for growing different plants, even vegetables – symbolizes the possibility of positioning the institution at the forefront regard-ing the conservation of water and energy.

A combination of individual and collaborative work areas are provided. These

ares, arranged as an office landscape or “bürolandschaft”, complement the

landscape on the roof.

The spaces below this green cover are organized around a grid of patios, which

provide natural light to every corner of the offices. There is no more than 5

meters between each work area and a window.

The masterplan organizes and gives hierarchy to the value of open space and

its importance as an ecosystem. It’s offered as a project deeply committed

with the possibilities of environmental regeneration.

The intervention capitalizes the existing facilities as a strategic location and

as a green lung, being the only significant green area on the west of down-

town Monterrey.

The garden as a water collector/filter is a whole declaration of what “Agua y

Drenaje de Monterrey” communicates regarding rain water preservation and

recycle. This didactic vocation, complemented with the symbolism of the

water pavilion, concurs with the sustainable philosophy of the dependence,

and therefore is expressed in all the elements of the construction.

The goal was to design a flexible space where the client’s family could relax, have fun and spend time with family and friends.

A wooden hall goes through the froject from the main entrance up to the garden, through the pool and the social area.

There is an emphasis in the transparency and the interior-exterior relationship of the project thanks to the use of glazed curtain walls and the extended roof.

“Zula 8” is a private residential complex located in one of the most exclusive areas of the city. It consists of 9 houses in a 6,000 m2 site. Each lot has 500 m2 approximately.

Similar house designs were made for the 5 regular lots, and 4 spe-cial designs for the corner lots. Exposed aggregate concrete, wood and stone were used on the façades of all 9 designs.

All houses have 4 levels. On the basement the service areas are lo-cated and on the fourth level there’s a terrace with amenities and a privileged view of the mountains.
