ERA packaging & decorative gravure award

Hatzopoulos shined at the 2017 ERA Packaging Gravure Awards, winning

a prestigious prize that rewards rotogravure printing excellence. On No-

vember 7th the "Trekpleister Espressobonen Fortissimo" design for cof-

fee beans printed by Hatzopoulos S.A. received the ERA Award of the

year in the category “Flexible packaging – metallized film, metallized

laminates and metal foil-plastic film composites”.

ERA - European Rotogravure Asso-

ciation- is the leading international

non-profit organization dedicated

to supporting the gravure industry

with members from the publica-

tion, packaging, and decorative printing sectors. The 2017 ERA Packag-

ing and Decorative Gravure Award gives the opportunity to participants

in the production chain to show gravure quality in packaging printing.

Once an art form and a craft skill, gravure today is a computer controlled

manufacturing process, offering outstanding print quality, output con-

sistency, highest versatility and speed. The ERA packaging gravure win-

ning pack of 2017 stands for our company's consistent and passionate

focus on printing quality. This is the 5th time that ERA honors our com-

pany emphasizing once again the printing perfection which we have suc-

cessfully established over the years.

award-winning flexo

We are excited that the previous year-end has brought us another pre-

cious industry award to add to our collection! A Gold achievement for

Hatzopoulos at the 31st edition of the Flexostar Awards, organized by

the French Flexographic Association - ATF in Saint-Marlo, France. Our

Delifrance Findus Croissanter entry has made it to the top of its category

at this well- established competition rewarding our consistent focus on

printing quality and our flexo expertise!

The Flexostar awards recognize and honor annually flexographic printing

excellence in several packaging categories: monolayer films, laminates,

labels, shrink films and cartons. The Hatzopoulos - Delifrance Findus

Croissanter printed reference has earned the highest rating of the year

in the 'Flexible films printed with S-B inks' category, thanks to its image

sharpness, smooth ink coverage, precise registration of all printed ele-

ments and flawless press-run

consistency. The overall print-

ing result is impressive for a

demanding design which re-

quires flexographic mastery.

worldstar packaging award

Hatzopoulos has won the ultimate packaging

award at this year's competition organized by

the World Packaging Organisation -WPO! Our

"Power Gel Stick-pack" is a Worldstar Winner

2018 in the Packaging Materials category!

Our novel Power Gel stick pack project concerns a quadriplex structure with

laser scoring for a unique-shaped stick of energy gel for athletes. The packaging

material provides high barrier properties against moisture, oxygen and aroma.

In addition the raw and secondary materials have been selected carefully, to

withstand the hot-filling and pasteurization procedures. The stick form re-

mains intact during transportation and it can resist as well any pressure ex-

erted by the athlete who may carry the pack on them during practice / or on

the field (e.g. bicycle race). Hermetic sealing is safeguarded at all times, irre-

spective of gel viscosity or pasteurization conditions. The stick is hyper-func-

tional, as triple laser scoring is applied to the packaging material, in order to

ensure fast, easy and safe opening by the athlete and the top area shapes a

nozzle, so that the gel may be consumed immediately by the athlete. Critical

point is the “trash chain” that is created on the top corner of the stick, which

is necessary so that environmental pollution is avoided. Rotogravure printing

has been selected for this range, with the metallic effect giving an impressive

and dynamic visual appeal.

The annual Worldstars is one of the most respected international competitions

for industrial products, rewarding innovation in packaging since 1970. We are

proud that our stick-pack solution, following its golden recognition at the na-

tional Packaging Innovation Awards earlier this year, has now climbed to the

international top, earning a prestigious position among the world's best in

packaging!

supporting business ethics

Businesses worldwide have a clear responsibility, profound self-interest and great potential to assume a vital role in the fight against corruption. Bribery

and graft not only affect companies’ ability to operate efficiently, but prevent the benefits of private-

sector investment from reaching vulnerable populations and contributing to sustainable development.

All societal actors, including businesses, benefit when corruption falls.

Transparency International engages in partnerships with companies that seek to demonstrate their com-

mitment to integrity by supporting the fight against corruption at the national or international level. We

believe that such collaboration levels the playing field for business and enables companies to set an ex-

ample for profitable and ethical operations. Hatzopoulos S.A. has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Business Integrity Forum

(BIF). The BIF, is a group of corporate supporters committed to the fight against corruption. Established this year and coordinated by the “Transparency

International - Greece” organization, the Business Integrity Forum brings under one roof companies that are

openly committed to integrity; setting thus the example for ethical business operations!

Ethos is one of the core values of our company and with our BIF membership we actively support this initiative

for the international fight against corruption. As BIF members, we share these principles within our industry,

strengthen anti-corruption messages across our employees and educate all involved departments to recognize

and manage corruption incidents. This is communicated through our company Code of Conduct which was

signed in 2015. This collective effort aims to raise awareness of the business world and every individual, paving

the way for responsible and transparent business sense.

duplex and triplex bio-solutions

We help our partners achieve their sustainability goals

Compostable plastics are a new generation of materials, which are biodegradable via composting, they are produced predominantly

from renewable resources, they are not hazardous/toxic and decompose back into carbon dioxide, water, biomass, etc

Specific certified inks are used for printing → suitable for production of

bio-materials, no toxic residue

Bio-compostable solvent based adhesive → suitable for de-

manding applications (high performance)

Legal frame | norm EN 13432: Deriving from the EU

directive on packaging waste management (94/62/EC)

this standard includes all requirements for the design

& the production of compostable and biodegradable

packaging materials The Hatzopoulos bio-design con-

cept structure is characterized as bio-degradable and

compostable, as all components of the laminated film are

certified by EN13432:2000.

The certification of the packs for composting either at home (OK home

compost) or at a certified industrial environment (OK compost) is

preformed by Vincotte: www.vincotte.com. Bio-based certifi-

cations can also be provided (varying from 20-80% bio-

based part of the final pack).

Benefits of our bio packaging solution:

High barrier properties

Suitable for many different pack types

Suitable for high speed packaging machines

Lower sealing temperature (VS classic triplex film

structures) can be set at most packaging machines

→ improved environmental footprint of the total

production cycle of the final product

Hermetic sealing is at all cases guaranteed

A complete color range is available for graphics

investment in refinery

The expansion of the existing solvent recovery plant was necessary in connection with the installation of two new machines:

One rotogravure printing press Bobst 4004 and

One triplex laminating machine Bobst CL 850 TD

The increased volumes of solvent laden air from the production machines requested the addition of a new suction fan bringing the total capacity of

handling to 180.000 m3/h allowing also for eventual further additions of machines. In consequence, the average solvent flow increased to 600 kg/h

which could not be handled by the existing configuration of the recovery plant. Therefore, the addition of three new active carbon adsorber tanks

was mandatory and this brought the total number of adsorbers to seven. Alongside the addition of tanks, the already existing ones had to be supple-

mented with active carbon (after sieving and removal of worn carbon).

In total 55.000 kg of active carbon was supplemented

to the tanks. In order to increase the output capacity

of the plant, the condensation battery’s cooling capac-

ity was expanded by the addition of a new heat ex-

changer, a new water-cooled water chiller and the

water cooling towers capacity was increased by 100%.

The resulting final configuration of the recovery plant

has the capacity to handle the present and future

needs of the production plant and ensures a high level

of solvent recovery as well as, conformation with the

VOC emission limits.
