Origin of Black History Month In 1915, Harvard historian Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH). The ASNLH's purpose was to focus on researching and promoting achievements made by black Americans and others of African descent. The ASNLH is now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). The ASALH created a week to celebrate Black History in February. Abraham Lincoln's birthdays. 

In the 1960s, the week of celebrating Black History becameBlack History Month.  The first U.S. President to recognizeBlack History Month was President Gerald Ford in 1976.

Since 1976, every U.S. President has designated February asBlack History Month, and each one has endorsed a theme for

the month.  

The theme for 2018 is "African Americans in Times ofWar".  This years marks the 100th anniversary of the end of

World War I and honors the role black Americans haveplayed in warfare in the past and present.
