Students with the following characteristics and attitudes tend to learn more successfully and effectively in online courses. These are students who:

take more responsibility for their own learning and have developed good time-management skills, a great deal of self-motivation and self-discipline, and who do not wait until the last minute to complete course assignments.

are not afraid to communicate with the instructor and email immediately if they have questions or run into problems while completing assignments.

have good reading and writing skills. understand online courses may be far more

convenient, but are not necessarily easier. check their class web site and email every day,

commit to 4-15 hours per week, per course, and complete assignments by the deadline.

enjoy and do well in the areas of critical thinking and decision-making and who pay attention to details.

are not afraid of computers; who have access to good computer equipment and have back-up plans in case the technology fails.

In the "User ID" box enter your Hartnell Student ID (no beginning zeros - ID# 0012345 = 12345) . You can find your ID by: ◦ Checking the back of your CatCard ◦ Logging into PAWS and clicking on “My Profile”. You will see the

number under your name ◦ Checking your printed registration receipt ◦ Check with Admissions and Records

In the "Password" box enter the default password of "student“

If you have taken online courses with Hartnell before, and have changed your password. Use the last password you entered into the “my profile” section of the course.

1. Show students how they can can keep track of the activities and due dates in the course with the Course Checklist, which is available by clicking on "View Checklist" from the homepage of the class.

2. Show students how to use the Gradebook, not only to see their grades but ALSO how to read instructor's comments by clicking on the grade. I ask my students to view the specific week (not the Grades to Date).

1. Enter your usernameUse the same User ID you already have for PAWS, which is your first name middle initial last name, as one long wordFor example if you name is John Michael Smith your username would be johnmsmith

If you don't have a middle name your login is your first name and last name together.Using the previous example, your username is johnsmith

If another student has the same name as you, a four-digit number will be added after your name. For Example for two students with the name Maria Lucy Ortiz: marialortiz0001, marialortiz0002, etc.

2. Enter Your PasswordInitial passwords are your eight digit date of birth

For example if you were born on February 14, 1985 your initial password is 02141985

It is STRONGLY recommended that you change your password.
