Joseph Agius

Joseph started his ceramic studies 13 years ago at the previous School of Art and

Craft at Targa Gap Mosta. The artist has participated in several collective

exhibitions and organized four personal exhibitions including the personal show at

Palazzo Castellania recently in April 2010. With ceramics he often uses rusty sheet

metal recycled from 45 gallon tanks abandoned in our countryside. In addition to

'found object' Joseph uses old newspapers that in his opinion transform into a symbolic protest as the

media obscure everyday reality.

Henry Alamango

Ever since he can remember, Henry Alamango has been enamoured of the

Mediterranean- a love that must have germinated spontaneously from his intimate

relationship with the natural environment of the Maltese Islands. Memories peppered

with walks on wild thyme, the aroma of wild figs, clear cobalt skies giving way to crimson

sunsets in autumn, hot summer limestone, glowing light and deep shade in urban

landscapes, and, above all, the ubiquitous deep-blue sea: all these have shaped this artist's journey.

Henry transmits his fascination with Mediterranean culture through his figurative representation of the

landscapes and coastal scenery of the Maltese islands. Nonetheless, he is also an avid painter on his

Mediterranean travels .Whilst his preferred medium is watercolour, he often incorporates chalk

pastels, acrylics and vibrant inks in his work. Henry is a self-taught artist, largely unknown until the first

years of the new millennium, which saw a burst of solo exhibitions and several collective endeavours

with fellow artists. He is best known within the cultural milieu of Gozo, where his figurative

representation of marine and landscape subjects have firmly anchored him to the local community,

who identify with the artist's expression of that island's romanticized memories. A prolific artist with

several corporate and international clients to his name, Henry does not aspire to an exalted

philosophical concept or message in his work. He simply wishes to draw attention to our collective

good fortune as custodians of a unique environmental and social heritage – and hence our onerous

responsibility for nurturing and passing on this patrimony.

George Apap

George Apap is very able to concentrate thoughts on the baroque as well on the

exceptional pre-historic treasures which are scattered around the Maltese islands. Loving

both the land and the sea, he can attentively depict the various natural and geographic

features of our islands. His pictures give the feel, the scent, the longing that one

experiences when one remembers the memories of his birthplace. George Apap’s

pictures confirm his deep fondness and predilection of the characteristics of our native land, combined

with a feeling of nostalgia.

Noel Attard

Born on April the 15th, 1966, Noel Attard (aka nattardo) was brought up in an

artistic ambience he yearned to live up to. After attending various art schools, Noel

later sought to compliment his practical side with theoretical academic studies at

the University of Malta where he graduated in History of Art 2006. From his first

participation in a collective output at Bath, England with the Malta Society of Arts,

Manufactures and Commerce, back in 1998, he never looked back and has participated in a

considerable number of collective exhibitions both locally and abroad to this present day. In 2003 he

held his first solo exhibition at St. James Cavalier and his most recent solo exhibition in 2009, this time

at the Loggia, National Fine Arts Museum, Valletta. During this past decade Noel has been working on

his distinctive style that landed him considerable reputation and sales both on the international and

especially on the local art market. Noel chooses to be ascetic in his art and conveys only what is

important to grasp the onlooker s attention. The texture is rich thanks to a balance reached between

the aggressive application of paint and use of gauze in the background which thickens the canvas and a

studied use of subtle colour in the foreground. Noel s art is a tribute to life in general and often shows

the emotional state the artist s in when depicting a particular piece of work. His works forms an

essential part of his lifestyle and are thus an integral part of his life. Noel thanks his family for being

what he is today.

William Azzopardi

Dr.William Azzopardi (1964- ) was born in Fgura and resides in Zabbar, in the South, which

part of Malta features frequently in his works of art. William studied art both in Malta, at

the Government School of Art and in Florence at Istituto Leonardo da Vinci. Later in life,

he also studied history of art, visited several foreign museums and refined his watercolour

techniques at Winston Hassall’s studio in Valletta. As an artist, he participated in both

collective and personal exhibitions in Malta, Italy, France and Australia. His works, that capture the

rapt beauty and fragility of the Maltese landscape and seascape, appear in private collections in Malta,

Germany, UK, the States and Australia as well as in public collections, the Malta International Airport,

ITS and Birgu Local Council. William’s art was filmed by Arte Channel (France) and TVM (Malta). With

his landscapes, the artist has also featured the human figure, often speculating on the relationship

between the two. Both William’s paintings and photographs have served as illustrations and front

covers for several publications, including anthologies of poetry. His art, in collage, acrylics and

watercolour, has combined sharp or humorous social comment, abstraction and movement and

occasionally, a touch of surrealism.

John Martin Borg

John Martin Borg is mostly renowned for his maritime pictures and atmospheric

landscapes. However over the past two decades or so he broke new grounds with his

abstract and religious works intertwining them seamlessly together to produce

individual distinctive works, easily identifiable with the artist. To this extent his last

personal exhibition, held at the National Museum of Fine Arts last February, was all

dedicated to his abstract works.

The works of John Martin Borg are locally found in a number of important places including the

Museum of Contemporary Arts, the Maritime Museum, the Cathedral Museum Mdina, and the

presidential Palace at San Anton and in the reserve collection of the Museum of Fine Arts. His works

have also been exhibited abroad at the Mall gallery and the Royal Watercolour Society in London, at

the UNESCO Head Quarters in Paris, The Castel in Heidelberg Germany; as well as in Cologne, Munich,

Stuttgart, Salzburg, Paris, San Tropez, Tunisia, Dubai and Florida (USA). His water colours are also found

at the World Health Organisation centre in Geneva and the Commonwealth Centre in London. One of

his paintings forms part of the Royal Collection in London. This had been presented to the Royal Couple

by the President of Malta, His Excellency Dr. Censu Tabone in May 1992. Another of his paintings was

presented to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on His visit to Malta in April 2010, by His Excellency Dr.

George Abela, President of Malta.

Chev. Alfred Camilleri Cauchi

Artist Alfred Camilleri Cauchi is the third son of sculptor Agostino Camilleri and Francesca née

Cauchi. He was born in Victoria, Gozo, on the 24th of January, 1943. He attended St. Edward’s

College and the School of Arts in Malta. He continued to further his studies at the College of

Arts in Edinburgh, Scotland, under the tuition of Prof. Schilski, Andrew Dodds and Anne

Hendascen. He was awarded this scholarship by Lady Laycock, the wife of Sir Robert Laycock,

who was the Maltese Governor of those days. Alfred Camilleri Cauchi is well-known for the various Good

Friday statues which he composed. These can be found in various parish churches around the Maltese

Islands. For other parish churches, he made statues representing Our Lady of Sorrows as well as others

depicting the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Without any doubt, here one needs to mention the magnificent

wooden statue of the Resurrected Christ, which is found in Saint George’s Basilica in Victoria, Gozo. Alfred

was the first Maltese artist to produce statues made of fibreglass. One is able to see most of these during

the Holy Week, mainly in representations portraying episodes of the passion of Jesus Christ. It was the

same artist who came up with the idea of such attractions throughout the Holy Week. Recently, the

International Academic Order Greci-Marino, which is based in Italy, conducted a research amongst Maltese

and international sculptors. The board of directors of this Academy examined the artistic curriculum of

each sculptor and great importance was given to their artistic levels and the techniques they use. It is

remarkable to know that many renowned artists from different artistic sectors like literature, music and

visual arts form part of this Order. The board of directors decided that the Gozitan sculptor and restorer

Chev. Alfred Camilleri Cauchi will be awarded the prestigious title of National Advisor for Malta within this

Academy. This is because he was chosen as a person of reference for other artists so as to guide them in

techniques associated with sculpture and restoration. This is the second title that Camilleri Cauchi received

from this Order, as in 1998 he was honoured as an Academical Knight of the Grand Cross.

Justine MB

We last enjoyed Justine MB’s art when she exhibited her ballerinas some years ago. The

sailing boats she also displayed couples with one of her favourite themes, ballerinas, give

us a sense of nostalgia and some of the boat paintings have a wistful and serene

atmosphere while the ballerinas sparkle with vitality. Justine has a romantic sensibility

which is evident in all her paintings. It is these qualities which giver her works a

distinctive power. A painting of a boat at sea on a cloudy day of flat is a ‘slow’ painting. Another of a

stormy day, painted in shades of blue makes you wonder if the voyagers will arrive safely. A third

painting of a boat is in different shades of brown and has a familiar and reassuring Valletta skyline. Her

ballerinas twirl in a kaleidoscope of colour. The canvas, to Justine MB is a stage on which to perform.

One painting depicting a scene from a summer festa is a swarm of colour with dabs and dashes of

orange and read. Justine MB needs no introduction to locals. She comes from a family which, on both

sides naturally gifted and painted in the chiaroscuro method. She initially started some sketch work

under the supervision of her grandmothers, Antonia Cassar Torregiani and Marcelle Bonici Mallia nee

Denaro, the latter, a painter and restorer who worked for years with Fr. Marius Zerafa, the former

curator of the Fine Arts Museum and an artist.

She has experimented extensively not only with colour, but also with pottery, cloth statues, batik, dyes

and other media. Justine was privately tutored by well-known Maltese artists and also attended classes

at the School of Art in Valletta and at Targa Gap. Here she continued to experiment and painted in

acrylics and water colours and a number of lessons were dedicated to life painting, painting outdoors

and still life. In May 2001, she pursued her studies overseas at the Chelsea College of Art and Design

and in Florence at the Angel Academy of Art.

Doris Micallef

A forerunner of the current crop of Maltese female artists, Dame Doris Micallef has been

engaged in the artistic field for as long as she can remember. Noted for her detailed

composition and her particular use of light, Doris delights in landscape painting, and she

does it simply and clear-sightedly. She sees the Maltese Islands as a single panorama to be

captured piecemeal according to her mood and the canvas size immediately at hand. Her

versatility spreads into other areas, such as portrait painting, and in recent years she has taken up

watercolour painting to complement her canvases. But throughout her artistic career she has

remained steadfast to the Maltese time-honoured landscape tradition. One of her main characteristics,

as Dennis Vella notes, is her ‘’prediliction for exploring effects of strong sunlight’’ while her images,

according to Peter Serracino-Inglott, ‘’are not just objective reflection of a particular landscape (but) a

dialogue between a human being and a segment of nature involving an ethical and ecological

relationship’’. In 2012 Dame Micallef published a book entitled’’Paintings of Malta and Gozo’’.
