DietThe orangutan is an omnivore and that means that they will eat both plants and other animals. The type of food that the orangutan will eat is fruit, but their favorite food is wild figs. They can eat all different types of vegetation but they can also eat meat to and the type of animals that they orangutan will eat is insects, small vertebrates and bird eggs. The other food that they will also eat is honey, lizards, termites and birds but they will mostly eat herbivorous plants make much of their diet than meat is. They will also eat nuts and they will also eat shoots to. The food that the orangutans will eat is mostly plants and fruit and these foods are very good for their diet. In the forest the orangutans will eat different types of fruit trees and they will also know when the trees are producing the fruit. To survive the orangutans has to find their food in so many different places so that they can get their food and they will also have to eat so much food so that they can live. During the day and night they will spent their whole time eating food. They will take a nap during the middays. There are seven mothers that will sometimes meet up with their young when there are overlapping fruit trees. All of the females will feed together and they will also watch their babies play together. The other food that most of the orangutan will eat is forest fruits and the type of forests fruits that they will eat is durians, jackfruits, lychees, mangos and figs. The leaves and the shoots make up the orangutan’s diet. They can also eat small animals, tree bark and soils rich in minerals. A lot of researchers discovered that orangutans can eat about 400 different types’ of food when they are in the wild. Orangutans do not have to come down from the branches to get a drink of water that is because they can drink water that they have gotten from the holes that is between the tree branches. The orangutans will look for their food during the day. The food that is very good for their diet is fruit and leaves. They can get these food sources from the trees that is in the rainforest. They can also eat tree bark; insects and they can

sometimes eat meat to. The orangutans will spent all of its time looking for food and these primates know the best locations to look for the best food that is in the forest. The best food that is really good for a orangutans diet is fruit. The best time of the year where the fruit is really good is in the months of April and November. When the orangutan is eating heavy foods then during that time they will start to store the fat and their energy for the months to come. There are sometimes that the orangutan can eat about 300 different types of foods so that they can eat it. The other food that the orangutan will eat is durian jackfruit, langsat, wild plum, breadfruit, strangler fig, rambutan and mangosteen these are the types of fruit that the orangutan will eat. When fruit season is over mostly during this time they will eat other animals and honey. The orangutans will get the insects they will have to get inside of the insects nest and this is how they do it they will break a stick in a convenient length and then the ape will hold it in its mouth. The type of fruit that the orangutan will eat is tropical fruit and the fruit that they eat is mangoes, durians and lychees. There is this other fruit that they eat and it is called bear fruit but they only eat this fruit in different times of the year.

Habitat/RangeThe orangutans live in tropical rainforests that can be found in Asia and they can also be found in the tropical rainforests that is in northern Sumatra, Indonesia and they can also be found in low-lying swamps that are in Borneo. The Bornean orangutans can be found in the rainforests that is in Borneo which is located on the southeast of Asia. The type of rainforests that the orangutan lives in is hill forests and swamp forests. The orangutans can be found on the island that is called Sumatra and Borneo that can be found in Southeast Asia. The two subspecies of orangutans that are alive today they can be found in Indonesia. They can also be found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. The orangutans lives in seven different forests and these forests all have low altitudes and the

Page 3: orangutan book

type forests that these animals can live in is mountain forests and thickly wooded swamps. The orangutan can also live in tropical and swamp forests that can be found on the southeast on the Asian islands that are called Borneo and Sumatra. The orangutan is the only ape that lives in Asia. An orangutan will spent a lot of its time up in the tree swinging from branch to another. The orangutans can be found on two islands that are in southeast of Asia. These apes can be found in the rainforests and the type of rainforests that they live in is dense forests and they are located on the part of the world where it is very hot and very wet. The orangutans also live near the lowland swamp areas these are the type of places where streams and muddy areas are found.

Size/Weight The size of a female orangutan is 45 inches (114 centimeters) tall and the size of the males is 54 inches (136 centimeters) tall. The females can weight about 81.5 pounds (37 kilograms) and the weight of the males is 191 pounds (87 kilograms). The height of the females is 2.6-3.5 ft (0.8-1.1 m) and the height of the males is 3.2-4.5 ft. (1-1.4 m).The weight of the females is 110lb (50 kg) and the weight of the females is 200lbs (90 kg). The orangutan is the biggest primate that lives in Asia. The males are a lot bigger than the females are. A male orangutan can stand about four and a half feet and they can weight about 130 - 200 pounds. The females can stand about four feet tall and they can weight about 90 to 110 pounds. When they are at the zoo they can be much heavier when they are in captivity. The height of an male orangutan is 1.4 m and the height of the females are 1.15 m. and the males can weight about 90 to 120 kg and the weight of the females are 40 to 50 kg. The body length of an orangutan is 1.1 and 1.4 m (3.5 – 4.5 ft) and they can weight about 40 to 80 kgs (88 to 75 lbs.). The orangutan is about ⅔ of the same size of an gorilla. A male orangutan can be bigger than four and a half feet (1.3 m) tall and the size of the females are three and a half feet (1 m) tall. The weight of the males is 130 to 200 pounds (59-90 kg) and the weight of

Page 4: orangutan book

the females is 88 to 110 pounds (40 – 50 kg). The height of the orangutan is 4 to 5 ft (1.2 to 1.5m) tall and the weight of the orangutan is 73 to 180 lbs (33 to 82 kg).

Life Span A orangutan can live about 50 years. When they are living in captivity then they can live about 59 years. The orangutan can also live about 30 to 40 years to. When the orangutans are in the wild then they can live about 35 to 45 years and when they are living in a zoo they can live about 50 years when they are in captivity. They can also live for 35 years when they are in the wild to. When they are in captivity they can also live about 60 years. They can also live about 45 years in the wild to in captivity an orangutan can live for 50 to 60 years when they are living in a zoo and the ones that live in the wild they can live about 30 to 45 years. These animals live a lot longer when they living in captivity. Their average life span is 35 years when they are in the wild and when they are in captivity they can live about 50 years. In the wild they can live about 30 to 40 years when they are in wild.

1 interesting factThe orangutan is a type of animal that is shy and they also live alone. The orangutan is normally active during the day that means that they are diurnal. These primates live in a very large territory and they also live all by themselves. They probably do this because of how they eat. These animals need very big locations so that they can have enough food to eat and when there are so many orangutans in one area this will lead to starvation. Orangutans are a lot different than any other ape that is because they live alone. The only time that they are not lane is when there is a mother with her baby. The orangutans favorite food is

Page 5: orangutan book

fruit. When orangutans do come together then they usually see each other when they are up in a fruit tree or it is time to mate. An orangutan will spent a lot of its life being alone. They will stay with each other for only about a few days or even in a few weeks. After those days or weeks are over than the male and the female will start to be solitary again. Male’s orangutans never want to come in contact with each other. Every single day an orangutan must travel in a few miles so that they can look for food. Sometimes a male might meet some other orangutans but he must not come in contact with another male. If there is a male in the area then the male will call out to them every time they see one and they usually do this at every once a day . Every male every single call that an orangutan makes has a very special ritual. This is how they do it first the male will start to break a tree branch and then they will slam it onto the ground. A male may also push over a dead tree over then after he is done then all of that then they will start to use a special call that they will used by using a special pouch that is located in his throat. The next thing that they will use is a terrifying roar that can be heard all over the forest. These roars can be very loud. Than finally the roar will turn into a bubbling gurgle and then it will fade away. A male’s call can be heard over 1 mile (1.6 kilometers).

2 interesting fact Orangutans will spend all of their lives in a home range that can be about 0.4 to 3.7 square miles. The size of the female’s home range is a lot smaller than the males are. The orangutan will spent a lot of their time in the trees. These primates have very special adaptations that can help them to survive in the tree life. The orangutan has very long arms, mobile shoulders and strong upper muscles and all of these adaptations can all come in handy when they are swinging through the trees. Orangutans also have very long narrow hands and feet that are known to grab branches from when they are climbing up in the trees. The orangutans have opposable digits that can found on their hands and feet. The thumbs of an orangutan are very small. This can helpful for their hands and feet because it can

Page 6: orangutan book

help them to hook onto branches as they move through the trees. The best place for an orangutan to find its food it is really up in the trees. When they are high up in the forest trees then they will build sleeping nests in the trees and they will do this every single night and they will also mate in the trees to. The orangutan can move very slowly when they are moving up in the trees. They will use their very long arms to help them to move in the trees. They can sometimes come down from the trees but they only do that just to walk to the next tree. The best place for an orangutan to live is high up in the trees because so that they can be safe from predators like tigers and leopards. The shape of the hands and the feet is just like a hook. This can make it a lot easier for them to climb the branches that are in the trees. The other thing that helps them is their thumbs and their very long big toes because they can stick out like an angle and this can help them to grip and to pick up objects a lot easier. It is very hard to walk through the rainforest because there is so many plants but this is not a problem for the orangutan. They can travel in the rainforests by climbing and swinging from tree to the next tree. The hands and the feet are curved this can come in handy when the orangutan is climbing up the tree branches. Their feet looks a lot like its hand the orangutan can grab the branch with their hands and feet the body of orangutan is built for hanging and swinging. The size of the orangutan’s arms is more longer than their legs are. The size of their arms is about 8 feet (2.4 meters) that can go to the finger toe up to the other finger toe. When the orangutan’s arms falls to the it’s sides then they can reach their ankles. The orangutan can get through the forest by grabbing the vines and the branches but there are times that the trees are to close together when this happens than the orangutan will have a gap that they will use to hold on tight to springy trees and branches they will use their hands and feet to help them to hold onto the tree branches then the primate will throw its weight from side to side when they are doing this they can make the branch bend back and forth together and then the branch will start to bend a little more each time then soon the branch will reach across the gap. Then the orangutan reaches and grabs the leafy branch that is closer to them. When the young orangutan has a hard time in the treetops then the mother will make a bridge out of her body. Then the baby will start to crawl across the mother’s body. The old males never seen to be high up in the trees because their weight

Page 7: orangutan book

cannot support the light branches. The females can weight about 80 to 100 pounds (36 to 45 kilograms). The males weight a lot more than the females do so when they are walking on the forest floor they have to walk on all fours when they are on the ground.

3 interesting fact The orangutan is a very intelligent animal and they also have very smart brains that happen to be the largest brain than any other primate in the world. This is how smart they are these primates can use special skills and those special skill that they use is that they can make tools out of objects like they can use twigs so that they can reach the insects and the honey that is located inside of a tree trunk. The other items that they will use is that they can make other tools and those tools are called blunt tools and the items that they will use for this scrape seeds that is from spiny fruit. The other thing that they use is fashion leafy branches and they will use this as an umbrella so that they can keep themselves safe from the sun and also from the rain. The orangutans that live in captivity they will be trained to talk with sign language and they are very well known for their ability to dismantle their enclosures or even try to escape. The orangutan is so smart that they can make tools out of objects like when it is raining they can make themselves a umbrella out of leaves so that they don’t get wet from the rain. They can also make cups out of leaves this can help them to get a drink of water. There are two species of orangutan and the two species is the Sumatran orangutan and the Bornean orangutan. The Sumatran orangutan lives on a island that is called Sumatra. These orangutans are usually named from the places where they live anyway. The Sumatran orangutans have very long hair and they have very light colored than the Bornean species do. The adult males have cheek pads that are called flanges, these cheek pads can form rigid half circles that can be found on the sides of the males and the female’s faces and they usually grow when they get older. The other species of orangutan is the Bornean orangutan

Page 8: orangutan book

and they can be found on the island of Borneo. The males have very large flanges and they also have very large throat pouch’s. They also have very shiny hair and the females rarely have any beard at all. The different between the both species is that the Bornean orangutan has a more heavy-side than the Sumatran species is. Just like all the other great ape the orangutan is a very smart ape. This has been discovered by a very special scientist named Jane Goodall when she discovered tool making when she was learning about the chimpanzees in 1960. That was the year when Jane discovered with the chimpanzees. The orangutans have been found that they can use tools in the year of 1990’s that was the year when people realize that the orangutans can use tools to help them to get food for them.

Responding An orangutan mother will be ready to have a baby when she is about 10 years old. She will be pregnant about nine months that is how long a human female is can be pregnant about. The mother will only give birth to only one baby and it can weigh about two pounds. The orangutans can also reach maturity when they are about 7 years old to. A female can be pregnant about 8.5 to 9 months and they can only give birth to only one baby. The baby will stop drinking their mother's milk until they are about 6 or 7 years old. The young orangutan will be ready to leave its mother for good when they are about 8 or 9 years old. This will also be the time that they will stay with other orangutans that are actually the same age and they will stay together for a very long time and they will have to be together so that they can eat and play together. Females will start to grow when they are about 10 years old but there are some females that will start to have their first baby when they are about 7 years old. The males will take a very long time for them to grow up. They will not be ready to grow at least they are 15 years old. The females will be ready to have babies when they are 7 years old. They will continue to mate until they are 12 years old. They will only give birth to only one baby at a time during that time they will start to cling onto their mother’s

Page 9: orangutan book

stomach until they are a whole year old. The baby orangutan will start to go out on their own until they are about four or five years older than they will start to be more independent but they still stay with their mom until it is seven or eight years. The gestation period for a Bornean orangutan is 244 days. These types of orangutans will give birth in a place that is called a tree top nest. The first time that the youngers will start to eat normal food is when they are 4 months old. During the youngers first year than they will start to cling onto the mom when she is traveling through the trees. The young orangutan will leave its mother until it is 8 years old. A female orangutan will only give birth to every single year. The gestation period for the Sumatran orangutan is between 7.5 to 8.5 months this is the type of pregnancy that humans get to. An orangutan will normally give birth to only one baby out there or sometimes that they will give birth to only two babies but that is very rare for an orangutan. A mother orangutan will normally give birth at night and they will only just have one baby. They will be pregnant for about 8 or 9 months. Sometimes a female orangutan will also give birth to twins. When the mother is in the nest she will normally give birth in it and she will be in there by herself because there might be a son or a daughter sleeping right next year, when the baby is born then the mother will start to clean her baby than the next thing that she will do is she will put the baby on her breast so that the baby can have its first milk. This will also be the time when the mother will start to carry the baby on her chest than she will start to travel through the forest. The mother will still carry her baby when she is up in the treetops. The baby will cling onto its back when they are above the ground. A baby orangutan will weigh about 3.3lbs (1.5 kg) that is how much that they will weight when they are born. Their eyes will start to open the moment that they are born and it will start to learn how to use its fingers so that she can grip, but it is still contact on its mom. The baby and it’s mother have a very strong relationship in the orangutan society. The females are very great mothers and they will do anything to make sure that their baby is being taken care of and to make sure they are safe they are also very protective of their young to. For the first time in the babies’ life the mother will carry it when the baby starts to get stronger then it will start to hold onto its mothers chest than it will start to move up onto her back. The mother has to carry the baby because if she doesn’t then the baby might fall or they will try to

Page 10: orangutan book

climb by itself. The other big reason why she has to carry her baby is because of predators like tigers and pigs will try to kill baby orangutans. The only time that they do face these predators is that they ever come down from the trees and onto the ground. This is also the reason why they spend so much of their time in the trees because tigers and pigs do not know how to climb trees. When the baby is three months old than that will be the time when the baby will start to eat soft fruit but they will still drink their mother’s milk at this time to. The baby will sometimes get its drink and its food from its mother’s mouth. When the baby is ready to walk on its own but the baby will still be carried by its mom for a very long time and they will also sleep in the same nest together to. When two females meet and then they will spend some of their time feeding together. If both females all have babies than they will start to play together when the mother is eating. The mother will start to wean the young orangutan when they are three or four years old. When they are this age than they are called a juvenile. The best time that the mother weans her babies is when the juvenile is screaming or throwing a tantrum. The younger will start to build its nest when they are this age to. The orangutan younger will always stay close to the mom they will also share the same tree together to. When the baby travels with its mom than the younger will learn where to find the perfect food and at which time of the year is the best time to find it. It will also learn how to climb very high up the trees so it can be much safe for it climbs. It will also learn how to move through the trees and learn all about the different sounds that can be found in the forest. The mother and the juvenile will sometimes come in contact with an adult male to see if the female is ready to mate. During this time the juvenile will be very scared because the males are so big. The mother and the juvenile will be accompanied by a very old young orangutan that has been lifted alone by it’s by its mom. This will teach the juvenile how to act around other orangutans. The orangutans will always get to know each other right before they start the mating process. The pair will spent a lot of their time sharing each other’s food source and they will also cuddle with each other as well. The female orangutan will start to have babies when they are 12 years old. To win over a female the males will have to fight for her. The males will not be ready to mate until they are 15 years old. The female orangutan will be pregnant about eight to nine months. This is where they will start to give birth.

Page 11: orangutan book

The moment that the it is born than the baby will start to become very helpless and totally depended on their mom the moment that they are born. The most caring mother in the animal kingdom is the orangutans. The young orangutan will continue to sleep in its mothers nest until they are three or four years old. They will stay with their mom until they are 7 or 8 years old. The mother will teach her baby how to look for food and know how to be safe from danger that can be found in the rainforest.

Survival Status The orangutan is totally endangered the reason why they are because their numbers are starting to go down because they are losing their homes to people. The other problem that the orangutans are facing is that people are taking baby orangutans away from their mothers so that they can be sold as pets all over the world. The biggest threat to these apes is the loss of their forest habitat because of logging. People are also killing female orangutan so that they can their babies take them into a circus or in a zoo. There forest habitats are totally in trouble because the forest trees are getting cut down so that they can make wood and to make clear land for farms and houses. 80 percent of the orangutan homes have all be destroyed because of people. The other reason why people are cutting down the forest trees so that they can make paper and furniture which means that there is not a lot of rainforest for the orangutan to leave in people will even keep baby orangutans as pets. This is how a hunter does it first the hunter will kill the mother than the hunter will take the baby. Right now the orangutan is not having a very safe home because their numbers are starting to go down there are about 80 percent of rainforest lifted for these animals this has happen since 1900. A lot of people do not know how many there are lifted in the wild but some say that there might be about 15,000 to 20,000 that is how many orangutans that people think that is still lifted in the wild today. The biggest threat to the Indonesia’s orangutan is the loss of their rainforest habitat. The reason why

Page 12: orangutan book

because the trees are getting cut down for timber and lands are being clear for mining a lot of forest land is being turned into farmland. In the year of 1997 the orangutans forest have been in trouble because of fire that is burning down their rainforest home people are doing this because they want to take over their land for farming. The fires that people make can be very out of control and they can spread out all over the forest that the orangutans live in. This fire can go for a whole month and these fires have destroyed about 385 sq . mi (1,000 sq .km) of the forest. But the government that live in Indonesian are working on away to help the orangutans survival in the wild. There are some national parks and wildlife preserves that have been made in forest areas in these places. These places are very helpful because they are safe from humans. The other problem that the orangutan is facing is that there are some countries that would like to keep a baby orangutan a pet if the orangutan has survived a capture than it might die on its way to its new owner. It is against the law to take orangutans out of Indonesia so that means that these apes must be smuggled out. A lot of people have use crates and packages that have false labels on them. There are only a few orangutans that will usually survive their journey through this horrible life. People like to take baby orangutans as pets but when they get older than they will be much bigger and stronger when they get older than they will start to get abandoned or be taken to a zoo. Every conservation organizations are saying that this is not right to keep these animals as pets and it is also not good for their population to.

Message from AuthorWe must do something to help and to save these amazing animals. These apes need all the help that they can get. Orangutans have the right to continue living on this planet. They are doing their part in nature and we should find a place in nature to. This is a very big planet that is filled with wonders and discoveries that are just waiting to be found. We have to make this planet a safe place for us and
