DescriptionThis isolated RS-422 circuit uses two

high-speed optocouplers that can switchup to 10 MBd signals. An isolated pow-

er supply VCC2 is required to power theDS 75176A driver/receiver integrated circuit.

The main benef it i s preventing common-mode transients from interfering with thesignal.

Avagos new range of 3.3 V/5 V optocouplersare the first commercially available optocou-plers designed to meet the JEDEC specifica-tion for 3.3 V LVTTL/LVCMOS logic, therebysimplifying the implementation of isolationin systems utilizing 3.3 V logic circuits.

A typical Power over Ethernet powersource equipment (PSE) block diagram usestwo 15 MBd 3.3 V optocouplers to isolatebetween the 13 W 48 V power supply and

the inter-integrated chip (I2C) control bus.

DescriptionThe circuit shown in the typical TTL interface

block diagram is an interface between twoTTL gates using an active output (totem

pole) optocoupler, the HCPL-2201. A seriesswitching circuit drives the optocouplerLED. The active output HCPL-2201 can be

directly connected to a TTL gate, and nopull-up resistor is required. The HCPL-2201

can sink enough current to handle up to16 LSTTL or 4 TTL loads.

Typically, the 5 MBd logic gate optocoupler

is used in the Isolated High-Low Gate Driveinterface block diagram as shown below.

Benefits Pull up resistor not required at the

    optocoupler output

Low power on the optocoupler inputcircuit

Wide operating supply voltagesup to 20V

    1 MBd Transistor Output Optocoupler

DescriptionThe circuit in the level shifting/TTL interfaceblock diagram shows how a 0 to 5 V logicsignal can be level shifted to a -15 to 0 Vsignal. This circuit can safely be used forlevel shifting up to 800 V. The circuit usesan open collector output logic gate, the74LS405, to drive the LED of the 6N135/6optocoupler. The 6N135/6 also has an open-collector output. The designer chooses RINto agree with the equation shown in the

schematic. This equation sets the value ofthe optocoupler LED forward current. Theoutput of the 6N135/6 requires a pull-upresistor, RL. The current-transfer ratio (CTR) ofthe optocoupler determines the maximumamount of current the optocoupler outputcan sink while maintaining the outputvoltage (between pins 5 and 6) of 0.5 V or less.

The benefit of the application is that itreduces the transient immunity problem andit is a convenient way of replacing the pulsetransformer for high-voltage level shifting.

    DescriptionThe ACPL-C79B/C79A/C790 isolation

amplifiers were designed for currentand voltage sensing in electronic power

converters in applications including motordrives and renewable energy systems.

Based on sigma-delta analog-to-digitalconverters, the new isolation amplifiers

feature high gain accuracy, low temperaturedrift of -50ppm/C, 3.3V/5V output supply

    operation and a wide -40 to +105C

operating temperature range. Thesefeatures are delivered in a SSO-8 packagethat has a footprint 30% smaller than thestandard DIP-8 package. When mounted on

a PCB, it occupies a space that is a fractionof that for a traditional Hall Effect current

    transducer.

The series is implemented with a fullydifferential circuit with gain accuracy of

    0.5% (ACPL-C79B), 1% (ACPL-C79A), and3% (ACPL-C790). With a 200kHz bandwidth

and 1.6s response time, the ACPL-C79xcaptures transients during short circuitand overload conditions. Operating from

a single 5V supply, the isolation amplifierseries features an excellent nonlinearity of

    0.05% and a SNR of 60dB.

    Optoisolation and Optical Sensor Products

    Integrated Gate Drive Optocoupler

DescriptionIn typical motor drive and renewable

energy power conversion systems, there areseveral signals between the power devices

and the micro-controller that need isolationand additional customized functionssuch as gate drive and current/voltage

sensing. Avago Technologiesgate drive andisolation amplifier products provide low

cost, high performance solutions for suchapplications.

    High performance motor drives require

precision timing for turning on and offthe power devices on the inverter whilerenewable energy inverter needs to bereliable and e cient when converting DC-

link voltage to usable AC power output. Themicrocontroller that controls these functions

needs to be isolated from the high voltageinverter side. Avago Technologies offers

a variety of optocouplers that have built-in gate drive capability. These gate driveoptocouplers come in wide range of output

current from 0.4A to 5A, and selected parts

with integrated protection features such asActive Miller Clamp, under voltage lockout,

fault Status feedback and desaturationdetection. For solutions that require lower

output power capability, IPM interfaceoptocouplers will meet the need.

    Benefits

Rail-to-rail output voltage for reliableIGBTs drive

Integrated fault protection and feedbackto reduce component count and solutioncost

    Short propagation delay for fasterswitching

Fast IGBT switching for improvede ciency

    Low power consumption for bootstrapoperation

High common mode transient rejectionensures reliable operation under noisyenvironment

Intelligent Power Module (IPM) Based Inverter Block Diagram

    DescriptionThe ACNV/HCNW/HCPL-45xx and ACPL-

48xx series optocouplers are designedfor Intelligent Power Module (IPM)

drive applications such as inverters andmotor control systems. These high speedoptocouplers have high CMR performance

that helps to reject common mode noise in

such high voltage systems. The output of

HCNW/HCPL-45xx devices is conventionalopen-collector; the output of ACPL-48xx

devices came with totem pole output stage

eliminates the necessity of using the pull-upresistor and allows direct drive to the IPM.ACNV45xx devices allow very high workingvoltage for use in Renewable Energy Supply

    system.

In addition to Intelligent Power Moduledrive, the ACNV/HCNW/HCPL-45xx and

ACPL-48xx series optocouplers can be usedin general purpose isolation applications

like high speed logic ground isolation, isolated line receivers, and microprocessorsystem interfaces.

    DescriptionThe HCPL-2602/12 have input current

regulators and integrated high gain photodetectors. The input regulator serves as a

line terminator for line receiver applications. The higher LED threshold voltage providesimproved immunity to differential noise and

    the rejection internally shielded detector

    provides better common-mode rejection

    with no sacrifice in speed.

The diagram below illustrates an unbalanced

line receiver using the integrated voltage-

clamp input optocoupler, HCPL-2602.TTL data is converted to a differentialsignal viathe differential line driver, andtransmitted over twisted-pair wire. The

    DescriptionData transmission between electronic

equipment which are physically separatedby a distance of more than a few feet

can be achieved by using the HCPL-4100 (transmitter) and the HCPL-4200(receiver) optocouplers. These devices

include specialized circuits for 20 mAdigital current loop applications, and are

designed to easily interface TTL and CMOSlogic systems to current loop systems.

20 mA current loop systems conventionally

signal a logic high state by transmitting20 mA of loop current, and signal a logic low

state by allowing no more than few milli-amperes of loop current. Optical coupling

loops break ground loops and provide

very high immunity to common mode

interference. These devices are simple to use

in a data transmission system for industrialapplications and maintainintegrity.

DescriptionThe HCPL-4562 and HCNW 4562 are

recommended for very high bandwidth(up to 15 MHz) AC analog designs such as

    coupling audio or video signals.

This circuit, with the HCPL-4562 wideband

analog/video optocoupler, is optimized forvideo signal coupling. The peaked responseof the detector circuit helps extend the

frequency range over which the gain isrelatively constant. The number of gain

stages, the overall circuit topology, and the

DC bias point are all chosen to maximizethe bandwidth.

HCPL-4562 provides simple and cost effec-tive solutions for coupling audio and video

    Solid State Relay (Photo MOSFET)

DescriptionAvago Technologies new ASSR Series arehigh-speed optically isolated MOSFET-output solid-state relays that featureperformance that has been qualified overa wide industrial temperature range of-40C to +85C. They are Form A (normallyopen) single-pole single-throw relays inindustry-standard 6-pin and 8-pin dual-in-line (DIP) packages, and 4-pin small outline(SO) packages. Their output ratings rangefrom 60V to 600V maximum load voltageand from 40mA to 2.5A continuous output

current. Their transient immunity of morethan 1kV/s and excellent noise rejectionbetween input-output as well as betweenopen terminals on the output will eliminateundesirable transient effects. Reinforcedinsulation of 3.75kV with fast switchingspeed makes them suitable for a wide rangeof industrial, consumer and automotiveapplications.

Compared to electromechanical relays, the ASSR Series offer distinct advantages, including the elimination of contact bounce, and problems due to shock, vibration, or

mounting position. They have no wearout mechanism limiting the number ofoperations, and require no minimumcontact wetting current. They are alsofree from magnetic fields, do not generateelectrical noise, and are not sensitive toelectromagnetic interference.

    Benefits Superior to traditional electromechanical

    relays (EMR)

    Lower power consumption

Faster switching speed with hightransient immunity

    Smaller size

    Much better reliability

High reinforced insulation in miniatureSO-4 package

    Qualied performance over- 40Cto +85C

    Expanding portfolio to address diversiedmarket

Low R(ON )for less insertion loss

    Low COFF)for better isolationperformance

High current capability with low R(ON)

    General Purpose

The ASSR-14xx, ASSR-32xx and ASSR-41xxare designed for a wide variety of indus-trial and consumer electronics applica-

tions which includes telecommunicationsswitching, data communications, automaticmetering, medical system, security system, battery monitor, digital home appliances, set top boxes, etc.

    Low C(OFF)R(ON)

The ASSR-xxxC and ASSR-xxxR Series arespecifically designed for fast switchingapplications, commonly found in test and

measurement applications such as pinelectronics, data acquisition, multiplexers

and matrix cards, and switching in theanalog circuits of parametric measurement

unit (PMUs). The low output capacitance,

low on-resistance, and low output off-stateleakage current of the ASSR Series provide

    higher system throughput and reduce

system errors. In addition to their fastswitching speeds, the ASSR Series providereinforced insulation of 3.75kV, which is

    often required in industrial environments.

    High Current

    The ASSR-15x0, ASSR-1611 and ASSR-5211

are specifically designed for high currentapplications, commonly found in the

industrial applications. In programmablecontrollers, input and output modules

allow microprocessors to sense and controlvarious loads. An AC output module allows

logic-level voltages to control a switch thatturns AC loads on and off. For example,

the output module of a process controllermight be used to cont
