Technical safety

Please observe the instructions in "Installation and connection"and "Technical data".

Before setting up the washing machine, check it for any externallyvisible damage. Do not install or use a damaged machine.

Before connecting the washing machine, ensure that theconnection data on the data plate (fuse rating, voltage andfrequency) matches the mains electricity supply. If in any doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

Reliable and safe operation of this washing machine can only beassured if it has been connected to the mains electricity supply.

Warning and Safety instructions

8

The electrical safety of this washing machine can only beguaranteed when continuity is complete between it and an effectiveearthing system which complies with current local and nationalsafety regulations. It is most important that this basic safetyrequirement is present and regularly tested and, where there is anydoubt, the household wiring system should be inspected by aqualified electrician. Miele cannot be held liable for theconsequences of an inadequate earthing system (e.g. electricshock).

Do not connect the washing machine to the mains electricitysupply by a multi-socket adapter, extension lead or similar. These donot guarantee the required safety of the machine (fire hazard due tothe risk of overheating).

Faulty components must only be replaced by genuine Miele spareparts. Miele can only guarantee the safety of the appliance whenMiele replacement parts are used.

The electrical socket must be easily accessible after installation sothat the machine can be disconnected from the electricity supply ifnecessary.

Unauthorised repairs could result in unforeseen dangers for theuser, for which Miele cannot accept liability. Repairs should only beundertaken by a Miele authorised service technician, otherwise anysubsequent damage will not be covered by the warranty.

If the connection cable is faulty, it must only be replaced by aMiele approved service technician to protect the user from danger.

Warning and Safety instructions

9

In the event of a fault or for cleaning purposes, the washingmachine is only completely isolated from the electricity supply when:

– it is switched off at the wall socket and the plug is withdrawn, or

– it is switched off at the mains circuit breaker.

The machine must only be connected to the on-site water supplyusing a new hose kit. Old hose kits must not be re-used. Check thecondition of the hoses regularly so that you can replace them ingood time and avoid the risk of any water damage.

The water flow pressure must be at least 100 kPa and should notexceed 1000 kPa.

This washing machine must not be installed and operated inmobile installations (e.g. on a ship).

In areas which may be subject to infestation by cockroaches orother vermin, pay particular attention to keeping the machine and itssurroundings in a clean condition at all times. Any damage whichmay be caused by cockroaches or other vermin will not be coveredby the machine warranty.

Do not make any alterations to the machine, unless authorised todo so by Miele.

Warning and Safety instructions

10

Correct use

Do not install the washing machine in a room where there is a riskof frost. Frozen hoses may burst or split. The reliability of theelectronic control unit may be impaired at temperatures belowfreezing point.

Before using the machine for the first time, check that the transitbars at the rear of the machine have been removed (see "Installationand connection - Removing the transit bars"). During spinning, atransit bar which is still in place may result in damage to both themachine and adjacent furniture or appliances.

Turn off the tap if the machine is to be left for any length of time(e.g. holiday), especially if there is no floor drain (gully) in theimmediate vicinity.

Flooding danger. If hooking the drain hose into a wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent the sink from overflowing. Makesure the drain hose is secure, so that the force of the water flowingout of the hose does not dislodge it.

Take care to ensure that foreign objects (e.g. nails, pins, coins, paper clips) do not find their way into the machine with the laundry. These may damage components of the machine (e.g. sudscontainer, drum), which in turn can result in damage to the laundry.

Warning and Safety instructions

11

Take care when opening the drum door after using the steamfunction. There is a danger of burning due to escaping steam andthe high temperature of the surface of the drum as well as theporthole glass. Stand back away from the machine and wait until thesteam has dissipated.

The maximum load for this washing machine is 8 kg (dry weight).See the "Programme chart" for the maximum recommended loadsfor individual programmes.

If the correct amount of detergent is dispensed, the machineshould not need to be descaled. If, however, you do wish to descaleit, only use a proprietary natural citric acid based descaling agent.Miele recommends using Miele descaler for washing machineswhich is available to order online at www.miele-shop.com(depending on country) or from Miele. Strictly observe theinstructions on the packaging.

Textiles which have been pre-treated in solvent based cleaningagents must be thoroughly rinsed in clean water before beingwashed in the machine.

Do not use solvent based cleaning agents, e.g. those containingbenzine, in this machine, as this may result in damage to componentparts and create toxic fumes. Such agents also pose a fire andexplosion hazard.

Do not use solvent based cleaning agents, e.g. those containingbenzine, to clean the external surfaces of the machine. They cancause damage to plastic surfaces.

Only use dyes specified by the manufacturer as being suitable foruse in a domestic washing machine. Always observe themanufacturer's instructions carefully.

Warning and Safety instructions

12

Energy and water consumption

– Water consumption and energyusage are determined by the size ofthe load. To make the most out of yourmachine, load the maximum dry loadfor the programme you are using.

– When smaller amounts of laundry arewashed, the automatic loadrecognition system will reduce theamount of water and energy used.

– Use the Express 20 programme forsmall, lightly soiled loads.

– Modern detergents make it possibleto wash at lower temperatures (e.g.20°C). Washing using lowertemperature settings will save energy.

– To maintain the hygiene of themachine, carry out a hot wash (above60°C) using powder detergent atregular intervals. Hygiene info willappear in the display to remind youto carry out a hot wash.

Detergent consumption

– Do not exceed the amounts ofdetergent recommended by themanufacturer on the packaging.

– Adjust the dosage to the degree ofsoiling of the laundry.

– Reduce the amount of detergent withsmaller loads (approx. 1/3 less thanthe amount recommended can beused when washing a half load).

When drying with a tumble dryer

Selecting the highest possible spinspeed for the wash programme willsave energy when drying in a tumbledryer afterwards.

1. Preparing the laundry

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins, paper clips, etc.) can cause damageto garments and components in themachine.

Sorting the laundry Sort the laundry by colour and by

care label. Most garments have atextile care label in the collar or sideseam.

Useful tip: Dark textiles often containexcess dye and should be washedseparately several times before beingincluded in a mixed load. Always washwhite and coloured items separately.

Pre-treating stains

Badly soiled areas, stains etc. shouldbe cleaned as soon as possible, preferably while still fresh. Spillagesshould be carefully dabbed off usinga soft, colourfast cloth. Do not rub.

Useful tip: Stains can be pre-treatedusing some handy tricks, which can befound in "Miele's guide to laundry care".Please contact Miele to obtain a copyof this booklet.

If you use a solvent-basedcleaning agent (e.g. one containingbenzine) to pre-treat a stain, makesure that any plastic parts (e.g.buttons) are protected, and that thecleaning agent is rinsed off beforewashing the garment in the machine.

Do not use solvent-basedcleaning agents in or on thismachine.

General tips

– Curtains: Remove lead weights firstor place in a laundry bag.

Detergent

42

The correct detergentAll detergents produced for automaticfront loading washing machines aresuitable. Follow the manufacturer'sinstructions and dosagerecommendations on the packaging.

The right amount to dispensewill depend on the following:– The soiling level of the laundry.

– The quantity of laundry.

Detergent dispensing aidsUse dispensing aids, (e.g. balls) if theseare supplied with the detergent, particularly when using liquid detergent.

Refill packs of detergentWhen purchasing detergent, buy refillpacks wherever possible. This helpsreduce the amount of waste packaging.

Fabric softeners and liquidstarchFabric softeners make garments soft to handle and helpprevent static cling when tumble drying.

Fabric shapers are synthetic starches and give an evenstiffer hold.

Starch stiffens and gives body to items oflaundry, e.g. shirts, tablecloths and bedlinen.

Problem solving guide

54

An unsatisfactory wash result

Problem Possible cause and remedy

Liquid detergent doesnot give the requiredresult.

Liquid detergents usually contain no bleachingagents. They do not remove fruit, coffee and teastains. Use a general purpose powder detergent

containing a bleaching agent. Use the appropriate capsule or add stain removers

to the compartment. Never put stain removers and liquid detergent

together in the dispenser drawer.

Grey, greasy particlescling to washed laundry.

Insufficient amounts of detergent were used to breakdown the particles of grease in heavily soiled laundry. Use more detergent or liquid detergent. Before washing the next load, run the Clean

machine programme using Miele dishwasher andwashing machine cleaner or a powder detergent.

White residues whichlook like powderdetergent are seen ondark textiles afterwashing.

The detergent contained compounds (zeolites) to aidwater softening which are not soluble in water. Thesehave ended up on the laundry. Try and brush off the residues with a soft brush

once the laundry is dry. Wash dark textiles using a detergent which does

not contain zeolites. Liquid detergents usually donot contain zeolites.

Use the Dark garments/Denim programme.

Installation and connection

61

Installation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitableinstallation surface for a washingmachine, being far less prone tovibration during the spin cycle thanwooden floorboards or a carpetedsurface.

Please note:

The machine must be level andsecurely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor:

We recommend a plywood base (atleast 59 x 52 x 3 cm). The baseshould span several joists and bebolted to the joists and not only to thefloorboards. Check for the presenceof pipes and cables first.

Useful tip: If possible, install themachine in a corner, as this is usuallythe most stable part of the floor.

Transporting the washingmachine to its installation siteTo manoeuvre the washing machine outof its packing case to its installationsite, hold it by the front feet as well asby the edge of the lid where it protrudesto the rear of the machine.

Ensure that the machine feet andthe floor are dry to prevent themachine from slipping during thespin cycle.

Removing the transit bars

Remove the left and right covers.

1. Pull off the transit bar covers and

2. then use a screwdriver to release thecatches at the top and bottom.

Installation and connection

62

Using the spanner supplied, turn theleft-hand transit bar 90°, then

withdraw the transit bar.

Turn the right-hand transit bar 90°,then

withdraw the transit bar.

Installation and connection

63

To avoid the risk of injury, theholes for the transit bars must becovered after the transit bars havebeen removed.

Fit the covers onto the two holes.

Secure the transit bars to the back ofthe washing machine. Make sure thetop catch is located above the holder.

The washing machine must notbe moved without the transit bars inplace. Store them as shown or keepthem in a safe place for future use. They must be refitted if the machineis to be moved again (e.g. whenmoving house).

Refitting the transit barsRefitting is carried out by reversing theprocedure.

Installation and connection

64

Levelling the machineThe washing machine must standperfectly level on all four feet to ensuresafe and proper operation.

Incorrect installation may increaseelectricity and water consumption andmay cause the machine to move about.

Screwing out and adjusting the feet

The four adjustable screw feet are usedto level the machine. All four feet arescrewed in when the machine isdelivered.

Using the spanner supplied, turncounter nut 2 in a clockwise direction. Then turn counter nut 2 together withfoot 1 to unscrew.

Use a spirit level to check that thewashing machine is standing level.

Hold foot 1 securely with a pipewrench. Turn counter nut 2 againusing the spanner supplied until it sitsfirmly up against the housing.

All four counter nuts must befirmly up against the housing. Pleasealso check this for the feet which didnot need adjustment. Otherwisethere is a danger of the machinemoving about.

Installation and connection

65

Installation and connection

66

The Miele water protectionsystemThe Miele water protection systemprotects all parts of the washingmachine and surrounds from waterdamage.

The system consists of three maincomponents:

– the inlet hose

– the electronic unit and drainage andoverflow protection

– the drain hose

Inlet hose

– Protection against bursting

The inlet hose is tested to withstandpressures up to 7000 kPa.

Electronic unit and washing machinehousing

– Sump: Any leaking water is collectedin a sump in the base of the machine.A float switches off the water inletvalves, preventing any more waterfrom flowing into the machine andwater in the suds container ispumped away.

– Overflow protection: This preventsthe washing machine taking in toomuch water. If the water levelexceeds a certain level, the drainpump switches on and pumps theexcess water away in a controlledway.

Drain hose

The drain hose is protected by aventilation system which prevents thewashing machine from being emptiedcompletely.

Installation and connection

67

Connection to the water supplyThe washing machine should beconnected to a mains water supply inaccordance with current local andnational safety regulations.

IMPORTANT Australia and NewZealand

This appliance must be installedaccording to AS/NZS 3500.1. Backflowprevention is already integrated in theappliance.

The machine is designed to operatewith a flow pressure of between 100and 1000 kPa. If it is higher than1000 kPa, it is essential to fit a reducervalve.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains tap with 3/4"threaded union. The tap should be fittedby a qualified plumber.

The connection point is subjectto mains water pressure. Turn on thetap slowly and check for leaks.Correct the position of the washerand union if appropriate.

The washing machine is not suitablefor connection to a hot water supply.

Maintenance and care

Only use a genuine Miele hose shouldyou ever need a replacement. These aretested to withstand pressures up to7000 kPa.

In order to protect the water inletvalve, the two dirt filters (one in theopen end of the inlet hose, the otherin the inlet point in the machine)must not be removed.

DrainageThe machine drains via a drain pumpwith a delivery head of 1 metre. Thedrain hose must not be kinked as thisrestricts drainage. The swivel elbow atthe end of the hose can be turned ineither direction, or can be detached ifrequired, with a sharp twist and pull.If required, the drain hose can beextended to a length of 5 m. Thenecessary parts can be purchased fromMiele.

For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a max. of 1.8 m) a replacementdrain pump will need to be fitted. Please contact Miele for advice. If necessary, the drain hose can beextended to a length of 2.5 m. Thenecessary parts can be purchased fromMiele.

Drain hose connection:

1. Direct into a sink or basin:

Please note:

– Hook the hose over the edge andsecure.

– Make sure that the water can drainaway freely without hindrance.Otherwise there is a risk of wateroverflowing or of some of thedrained water being sucked backinto the machine.

2. Connected securely to a plastic drainpipe with a rubber nipple. There is noneed to use a siphon.

3. Connected securely to a floor gully.

4. Connected securely to a standpipe.

Electrical connectionThe washing machine is supplied with amains cable with moulded plug forconnection to a 230V mains supply. Thevoltage, rated load and plug rating aregiven on the data plate. Please ensurethese match the household mainssupply.

The accessibility of the plugmust always be ensured in order toseparate the washing machine fromthe mains. Do not connect theappliance to an extension lead ormulti-socket adapter as they do notguarantee the required safety of theappliance (e.g. danger ofoverheating).

All electrical work should be carried outonly by a suitably qualified andcompetent person, in strict accordancewith national and local safetyregulations. For extra safety, it isadvisable to install a residual currentdevice (RCD), with a trip current of 30mA. Ensure power is not supplied to theappliance until after installation workhas been carried out. Connectionshould be made via a suitable switchedsocket.

If the connection cable is damaged, itmust be replaced with a Miele cable ofthe same type by a Miele approvedservice technician only.

WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUSTBE EARTHED
