MS Unit 3: Ocean Zones and Ocean Chemistry Pretest

• Copy the following questions on a piece of notebook paper and try to answer. Remember this is a pretest and used to guagae your current understanding. It will go into eSembler with a 0% weight and will also be used to show how your understanding improved after the Unit 3 post test.

Part 1 – Ocean Zones

Student learning goals for part 1 include;

• Students will be able to .. .

1. Describe the types of ocean zones, the physical characteristics of each zone and determine the type of organisms that live there.

2. Describe the limitations and adaptations needed for organisms to live in each ocean zone

3. Explain how changes to an ecosystem like climate change, seasonal variation, and succession can affect populations in an ocean zone.

Page 8: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Zones are differentiated based on different properties

These properties are as follows:

A. Water or Bottom

B. Near Shore or Offshore

C. Light Availability

D. Ocean Depth

Page 9: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

● The zones exist only in our minds and on paper as a way to study different characteristics of

different areas of the oceans

● Just as the different oceans are not separated by any boundaries, neither are the zones in the

ocean

● Animals pass through the zones readily without any actual borders to stop them

● These zones can differ depending on what information you view so you are only responsible

for what you learn in this class

A. Pelagic (water) or Benthic (bottom)

Page 11: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Pelagic Benthic

• The water column above the bottom

• Organisms that live in this zone swim or drift

• It can be from the ocean’s surface to the deepest waters

• The sea floor at all depths

• Organisms that live here generally don’t swim well or are sessile

• It can be on the ocean floor from where the waves break to the trenches

B. Neritic (nearshore) or Oceanic (offshore)

Page 20: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Neritic Oceanic

• From where the tide comes up out to the edge of the continental shelf

• From the continental shelf all the way across the ocean to the other continental shelf

C. Light Availability

Photic Zone – Surface of ocean down to about 100 meters

• Greek, photic means “lit” Disphotic Zone – Below photic zone from about

100 meters down to about 500 meters• Greek, disphotic means “poorly lit”

Aphotic Zone – Below disphotic zone from about 500 meters down to the bottom

• Greek, aphotic means “without light”• 90% of the ocean is in the aphotic zone!!

D. Ocean Depth

• Epipelagic - “Surface”

• Mesopelagic – “Middle”

• Bathypelagic – “Deep”

• Abyssalpelagic – “Bottomless”

• Hadalpelagic – “Unseen”

Page 34: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Epipelagic Zone

• 90% of all ocean life lives here.• This is the only zone where photosynthesis occurs.• This zone contains the most important organisms

in the ocean!!!!

– Guess what they are.

• Why do you think they are the most important organisms?

Page 35: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Mesopelagic Zone

• Food is scarce, and mostly falls from above.

• There is enough light from above that animals need camouflage, but not enough for photosynthesis.

Page 36: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Bathypelagic Zone

• Deep• Dark • Cold• Food is very scarce

• Water pressure is immense, reaching 5,850 pounds per square inch.

• In spite of the pressure, a surprisingly large number of creatures can be found here

• Most of the animals that live at these depths are black or red in color due to the lack of light.

Page 37: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Abyssalpelagic Zone

• Three-quarters of the ocean floor lies within this zone.

• Deeper• Darker• Colder• Even less food

• The water temperature is near freezing.

• The deepest fish ever discovered was found in the Puerto Rico Trench at a depth of 27,460 feet (8,372 meters).

Page 38: Opening Assignment Day 1 1. Explain how the Marianas trench formed. 2.List 2 limitations of deep sea exploration. Let’s finish our video .

Hadalpelagic Zone

• Deepest• Darkest • Coldest• The trenches

• The deepest point in the ocean is located in the Mariana Trench off the coast of Japan at 35,797 feet (10,911 meters).

• Temperature of the water is just above freezing, and the pressure is an incredible eight tons per square inch. – That is approximately the

weight of 48 Boeing 747 jets.

• In spite of the pressure and temperature, life can still be found here. Invertebrates such as starfish and tube worms can thrive at these depths
