Open Government to Support Collaborative Planning

Open data provides greater public access to the planning process, and

contributes to better evidence-based public policy

WHAT WE ALREADY DO: iCORRIDOR

•  Public web site for data visualization and information sharing on core planning and transportation data

•  MTO uses iCorridor to inform decisions on planning and infrastructure investments

•  Open to the public

•  Working towards an interactive calculator to provide traffic volumes for larger road segments

HOW THIS SUPPORTS OPEN GOVERNMENT Open Government - transforming policy development and service delivery through the improved collection, sharing and analysis of government information and data Open Data in Ontario – making government information available to the public in a usable format to help spur new ideas, products or services, and in turn, encourage economic prosperity Benefits – efficiency, better citizen engagement, evidence based decision making

•  Ontario’s Open Data Portal already includes over 170 data sets from across government

•  New layers that are important for planning are being added to Open Data:

•  Vehicle travel speeds on major roadways

•  Core commercial trucking information •  Core information on travel surveys and traffic counts

HOW WE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT OPEN DATA

BUILDING ON OPEN DATA AND WHAT WE ALREADY DO iCorridor Generation 2 •  Vision: Present data in a fully interactive way to support more complex analysis

•  Interactive platform that will enable the public to use planning tools themselves through our website

•  Exploring opportunities for partnership •  Built over time – adding new information as it becomes available

•  Support consultations such as review of the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, or future transit planning initiatives

BUILDING ON WHAT WE ALREADY DO

•  Ontario GeoPortal is a hosted enterprise GIS accessible to the Ontario Public Service to manage data.

•  GeoPortal provides the Ministry of Infrastructure and Infrastructure Ontario with location intelligence for the effective management of the government's realty portfolio. It is also used by other ministries to manage various business requirements across government.

• Provides a good estimate of immediate ridership catchment for transit

GROWTH PLAN METRIC: Development Intensity Mapping

•  Shows the location and size of new residential development

•  Allow visualization of the scale of development within and outside of built up areas

INNOVATIVE RESEARCH: Built Form – Dollars In, Dollars Out
