Dear Campus Bible Church,

We hope this will be a helpful guide for you this morning as we sing, pray and look at God’s Word together. !ings are going to look a little di"erent for us as we cannot currently meet together in person, but our desire is that we can still support each other and point each other to Jesus during this time.

!e current situation is unfortunate, but we think it’s a great opportunity to support, encourage and serve one another in di"erent ways. So as long as these circumstances persist, we hope you’ll use these Sunday morning times to gather with your family or a small friend group and worship God together.

Of course our plans may change Sunday to Sunday at this point, so please keep checking your emails and the church website for more information. !is is a great opportunity to love one another and to praise the Lord regardless of our circumstances. Please reach out to to our pastoral sta" and the rest of the Elders if you need anything, and we look forward to gathering once again soon.

“How to Rejoice in Suffering” 1 Peter: The Transforming Epistle

1 Peter 4:12-19

Introduction Statistics on the persecution of Christians: (opendoorsusa.org)

• 105 churches are attacked, burned or vandalized every month • 11 Christians are killed for their faith every day • Number of Christians who experience high levels of persecution:

o South America = 1 out of 21 o Africa = 1 out of 6 o Asia = 1 out of 3

What makes Christians in America think we ought to be immune to suffering and persecution? 8 Realizations about Suffering 1. Realize that suffering is a normal part of the Christian life. Verse 12: “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you… as though some strange thing were happening to you…”

• Suffering is part of God’s will for our lives (1 Peter 4:19)

• Scripture teaches us to expect suffering and persecution (Mt 5:11-12, 10:22; Jn 16:2-3) 2. Realize that suffering tests our character. Verse 12: “the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing…” 3. Realize that suffering results in deeper intimacy with Christ. Verse 13: “to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing…” 4. Realize that suffering intensifies our hope in the return of Christ. Verse 13: “keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.”

5. Realize that suffering is a sign we are ambassadors for Christ. Verse 14: “If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.” (cf. John 15:18-21) 6. Realize that suffering is an opportunity to glorify God. Verse 16: “but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name.” 7. Realize that our suffering is not as great as we deserve. Verse 17: “For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?” 8. Realize that in all our suffering God is faithful. Verse 19: “Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.”

Discussion Questions: 1. Most Christians in the United States have never experienced high levels of persecution. What effect do

you think that has had on the condition of the Church? 2. How would you describe your attitude toward suffering as a Christian? Did this sermon change your

perspective at all? 3. Why do you think suffering results in deeper intimacy with God? Have you experienced something like

that in your own life? 4. After listening to the eight realizations about suffering, what do you need to do this week to “keep on

rejoicing?”
