Page 3: Online Services: 8:30AM | 10AM | 11:30AM May 31, 2020

Dear Campus Bible Church,

We hope this will be a helpful guide for you this morning as we sing, pray and look at God’s Word together. Things are going to look a little different for us as we cannot currently meet together in person, but our desire is that we can still support each other and point each other to Jesus during this time.

The current situation is unfortunate, but we think it’s a great opportunity to support, encourage and serve one another in different ways. So as long as these circumstances persist, we hope you’ll use these Sunday morning times to gather with your family or a small friend group and worship God together.

Of course our plans may change Sunday to Sunday at this point, so please keep checking your emails and the church website for more information. This is a great opportunity to love one another and to praise the Lord regardless of our circumstances. Please reach out to to our pastoral staff and the rest of the Elders if you need anything, and we look forward to gathering once again soon.

Pastor Kenton Rahn

“The Cross to the Crown” 1 Peter: The Transforming Epistle

1 Peter 3:18-22 THE MINISTRY OF JESUS ON THE CROSS Verse 18 – “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit…” THE MINISTRY OF JESUS IN HADES Verses 19-20 – “… in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison, who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.” Three Major Views:

1. Jesus preached through Noah by means of the Spirit in the period before the flood.

2. Jesus proclaimed victory to the demonic spirits being held in judgment in Tártarus.

3. Jesus preached to people in Hades who had died in the days of Noah.

• Jesus did not offer salvation to the unrighteous spirits in Hades. There are no second chances for people who die in their sins (Hebrews 9:27).

• By looking at other Scriptures, we can get an idea of the ministry Jesus accomplished

during the three days his body lay in the tomb. • Jesus proclaimed judgment to the wicked and salvation to the righteous (Cf. 1 Peter 4:5;

Ephesians 4:7-10).

THE MINISTRY OF JESUS IN HEAVEN Verse 22 – “… who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and powers had been subjected to Him.” THE MINISTRY OF JESUS IN OUR HEARTS Verse 21 – “Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience—through the resurrection of Jesus Christ…”

Discussion Questions: 1. Which statement in verse 18 amazes you the most? Spend some time in prayer – praising and thanking

God for his amazing grace. 2. Pastor Kenton presented three major views on who “the spirits in prison” are. Which view do you think

is correct, and why? 3. What did you learn about Hades and the state of disembodied spirits when people die physically? 4. How can you apply this message to your life?
