the legendary New York heiress and socialite who obsessively pursued her dream of becoming a great opera singer. The voice she heard in her head was beautiful, but to everyone else it was hilariously awful. Her “husband” and manager, St. Clair Bayfield, an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St Clair knew he faced his greatest challenge. Volunteer Opportunities
Sewing anyone?? We would like to try to start a “sewing circle” to help seniors with any alterations they may need at a minimal fee (materials only). If we could recruit a group of folks who like to sew and chat we could dedicate a time and space for the group to meet, socialize and sew. It would be a win win for all involved. If you enjoy sewing and would like to be part of a group, please call Cathy 978-762-0208.
WE NEED OUR VOLUNTEERS MORE THAN EVER! Did you know that the 60+ population is the fastest growing segment of the population? The growing need for transportation to our senior population is placing an ever increasing demand on our Transportation Program. During FY2016 over 15,330 rides were provided to various locations including medical appointments, physical therapy, dialysis, adult and social day programs, shopping, banking, errands and other social activities. Many rides that cannot be accommodated by our vans because of availability could easily be accommodated in a personal vehicle. In response to this increasing need we are piloting a new “Volunteer Driven” Transportation Program by replicating similar programs running successfully all over the country.
Transportation
Medical transportation is available to Danvers residents age 60 or older, and/or disabled Danvers residents under the age of sixty. It is suggested that residents make transportation requests as early as possible for scheduling purposes. Due to high demand for booked appointments, we will get you to your appointment on time, however, you may need to wait for a return ride home.
Individuals in wheelchairs can be accommodated. The suggested transportation donation is $1.50 each way ($3 round trip) donation for appointments within Danvers and $2.50 each way ($5 round trip) donation for appointments to the adjoining communities of Peabody, Beverly and Salem. For ease of donations, we are offering seniors the option to purchase a donation punch card for $30. You may purchase a donation card at the front desk.
Please call Lorene to schedule a ride at 978-762-0208.

CHALLENGES OF LIVING ALONE (CLA): The Challenges of Living Alone group is open to anyone looking for support in successful solo-survival; we meet regularly on the 4th Thursday of each month from 1 – 2 pm. Feel free to invite someone who you think might benefit from the group. On May 25th, the topic of the day will be about personal financial management and address the following issues: Why is a budget so important? Everyone pays bills. Am I paying more than I should? What is financial exploitation? Am I a target? How can I protect my finances? What services are there for me if I need additional help with bill paying, organization, or account balancing? Heather Harrell, Money Management Program Manager at North Shore Elder Services, in collaboration with Maribel Amezaga, Operations Specialist Branch Administration at NorthEast Community Bank, will be presenting a Budgeting 101 Class. We will discuss the importance of keeping track of your finances and understanding your bills as well as the Money Management Program services that North Shore Elder Services provides for free to low income elders. See you then!
SOCIAL SERVICES ANNOUNCEMENTS
OUTREACH COORDINATOR, Lisa Westrate 978)762-0208 x105 Lisa Westrate is available for information and referral regarding services and benefits that may be helpful to you. Call to schedule an

LOW VISION SUPPORT GROUP: This group is for those experiencing any type of vision loss ranging from a small degree of vision loss to those who are totally blind. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 10:30am. On 5/11 Christopher Hartling will join us from MassEDP. The Massachusetts Equipment Distribution Program provides services to people who have difficulty using standard telephones. The program provides adaptive telephone equipment to enable individuals to enjoy clear, independent phone communications and the ability to contact 911 in the event of an emergency. The specialized telephone equipment is offered to people with a permanent disability for little or no cost, depending on income level. These disabilities include: deaf/hard of hearing, blind/low vision, motion, cognitive, and speech. Join us in May to learn about how to qualify and acquire equipment.
Do you have difficulty reading or holding books and newspapers? The Talking Information Center Network (TIC) is a radio reading service that provides around the clock programming for the blind, visually impaired or otherwise disabled. Tune in to volunteers as they read state and local newspapers, magazines, periodicals and other information about state programs and events. ** HOW TO LISTEN Call TIC at 781-834-4400 to order a radio receiver. Listen by telephone: call 712-832-7025 Listen via website: www.ticnetwork.org Download our free app on your phone ** For more information go to, www.ticnetwork.org or call 781-834-4400.

Items for May In keeping with the growing needs of our troops, we will be collecting these needed items for the month of May: Suntan lotions, skin lotions, deodorant & foot powder. Please drop off items at the Danvers Council on Aging, 25 Stone Street.
Medical Equipment We are currently in need of bath seats and bath benches. We are not accepting any other items at this time. We will update monthly any items needed. Facebook Did you know that you can get current updates on activities, classes, etc. just by liking us on Facebook? We update on a regular basis any changes/additions in our activities and on any programming. Circle of Hope
Does someone close to you (spouse/partner, child, grandchild, or trusted caregiver) withhold your medication, use your money without permission, limit your phone calls, or tell you when or where you can go? Do you feel that nothing you ever do or say is “right?” If so, you are not alone. Are you looking to be among peers in a safe space to share your experience? Help us help you, by joining a free educational support group for seniors over 50 every Tuesday from 11 am to 12 pm at the Danvers Council on Aging. This group is completely confidential. The group is sponsored by CALL-NS, Confronting Abuse in Later Life-North Shore, a grant which aims to provide outreach and education around abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation of elders fifty years and over. For more information, contact: Carolyn Lewis at 978-624-2248
What is a MOON? For people with Medicare, MOON has a new meaning: “Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice”. This newly required notice must be given to some patients who have been admitted to a hospital for “observation”. Hospitals are increasingly admitting patients under observation status. You may be surprised to know that even if you are admitted to a hospital room overnight, you might not be an “inpatient”. If you are under observation, you are considered an outpatient even though you may stay in a hospital bed for many days. This changes how your Medicare coverage works. The MOON will explain the reason for observation status and how it affects your Medicare coverage. For example, if you have Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap plan, an inpatient hospital stay of at least three days is needed to get any coverage for skilled nursing facility (SNF) care. If you are under observation, you would not get any follow up SNF coverage paid for, even if it is medically necessary. However, if you are in a Medicare Advantage plan or your doctor is in an Accountable Care Organization, the rules are different and the three-day requirement may be waived. For further assistance about this or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Program. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health and drug insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call the Danvers Council on Aging at 978-762-0208. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.
