Confused about HDTV? Here are some of the questions our customers ask us:Rear projection TVs - aren't those old news?Well, yes and no. They are old news because they've been around longer than flat panel plasmas and LCDs. However, everything old is new again...including rear projection HDTVs. They simply have the best price-to-size ratio out there. You definitely get more screen real estate for much less green than you'd spend on a similarly sized flat panel. And these aren't the rear projection monsters our dads brought home back in the late 80s/early 90s. Many models are just a foot or foot-and-a-half deep, often with sleek finishes that make them as attractive in today's homes as any plasma or LCD.

Will I need to calibrate my new HDTV's picture?In a time when great picture is of utmost importance when it comes to impressing friends and neighbors, calibration DVDs are incredibly foolproof - just pop one in your DVD player, and away you go. The simple on-screen guides use test patterns and a color strip while walking you through adjustments to the color, brightness and sharpness, matching everything to NTSC standards. True, it's not the most riveting videos (these aren't Spielberg movies, after all), but the results are sure to impress!

Is there much difference between HDMI cables?Indeed. Some cable manufacturers now list their cables' speed ratings on the packages (expressed in gigabytes or GB). It's important to ensure that the cable you purchase can handle whatever special features your HDTV might have. If your LCD has an increased frame rate, 120Hz for example, be sure you select an HDMI cable with a high enough speed rating to make use of that technology. Certain cables are also certified to show they ensure advanced color reproduction for features such as Deep Color.

This is an excellent AVR for the money. I have been enjoying mine for about one month with no issues. This receiver does not seem to run hot and the DD TrueHD and DTS-MA capabilities of this receiver are great. I find the hdmi switching to work great with my DVR, HTPC and PS3. User's manual is a challenge in some places with quite a bit of "small print" that caused me some pain getting my iPod to work through the USB but all worked out in the end. I am very pleased.

Exactly how important is megapixel count?Resolution is not as important as it was when digital cameras were first introduced. You can get excellent snap-shots from cameras with a six-megapixel resolution. Plus, there are other determining factors when comparing one camera's picture quality versus another's, such as the type of lens, the image processing chip, image stabilization, weatherproofing, size/portability and more. If you plan on making poster-sized prints, then it might be worth it to step up to a 10- or 12-megapixel camera.

What's a Superzoom Camera? Do I need one?Superzoom cameras will give you the greatest zoom range possible. Some of the upper-end models offer up to as much as 20x zoom capability. Before the introduction of Superzoom cameras, most digital cameras offered only 3x zoom capability. Superzooms are the cameras to consider if you want to pull subjects up closer from a distance. Parents with Little Leaguers or those who like to take pictures of birds will definitely enjoy the benefits that a camera with superzoom range brings.

What should I ask myself before buying?Q: What subject matter will I be shooting most? Landscapes? People?A: Many cameras now feature Red-Eye Fix and Face Detection.

Q: Does the camera need to be small enough to fit in a pocket or purse?A: If you're not using a tripod, you will want a camera that is easy to carry.

Q: How important is image stabilization? How good is it?A: If you're not using a tripod, go for stabilization. It'll clear up any blur.

Q: Am I going to be shooting outdoors? While skiing? Rafting? Camping?A: Some impressive point-and-shoot models are also waterproof.

What kind of audio recording can I expect?When buying a camcorder, it's easy to overlook the audio capability. Note microphone placement. Front-mounted mics pick up dialogue better, while top-mounted mics pick up surrounding noise in addition to dialogue. The type of mic is important, too. Unidirectional mics record only in the direction the camcorder faces, while omnidirectional mics pick up sound in all directions. Some camcorders also record multi-channel audio, which is nice if you have a 5.1 or better home audio system.

What are some ways to store my footage?If you happen to be an advanced A/V enthusiast, you may already have tons of computer-based storage space, a home network and media server. With this setup, you can stream all your movies after uploading them to your computer. However, if you're like the rest of us regular folks, you can set up folders on your computer to store your videos (don't forget to back up often). Or, for convenient viewing and sharing, use your computer's DVD burning drive or a stand-alone DVD burner to put them on disk. Then you can pop then in your DVD player or give them to family and friends!

What do SDHC memory card classes mean?SDHC cards are available in speed classes of 2, 4 and 6. Each class directly reflects the minimum sustained Data Transfer Rate (DTR) of the card.

Class 2: minimum DTR of 2 MB/second•Class 4: minimum DTR of 4 MB/second•Class 6: minimum DTR of 6 MB/second•

Note that many of today’s SDHC-compatible camcorders that run MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and other high-quality video compression require high-speed cards to transer video smoothly.

Used this camera on a trip to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos Islands. Results are superb. Finding an HD editing software package is proving to be more of a challenge. This camera produces MPEG-2 files which is a help since they use much less computer resources to render. When hooked up to a HD television, the results are excellent. You can use the camera as a player via the standard HDMI cable connector.
