Page 2: One World Week 2013

One World Week is back this year thanks to the university and the Union of Brunel Students. Throughout this week we have an array of events and activities going on all around campus to celebrate Brunel’s diverse community.

One World Week encourages staff, students and our local community members to join us and get involved in as many events as they can. Take a look at this miniguide, and feel free to ask any of the One World Week volunteers for help – we’re all very friendly!

By raising awareness, educating and celebrating, you have the chance to learn about new cultures, their traditions, songs, food... YUM! Don’t miss out this year and try something new.

Bea Lopez, World Students Chair

“Increase engagement and cohesion in celebration of Brunel’s diverse community.”

“Create a fun, inclusive and engaging environment to improve the student, staff and local community experience and promote

integration.”

“Encourage students, staff and the local community alike to share their unique experiences, and help to educate others to cultures,

values and aspirations often different to their own.”

One World Charity 2013WATERAID

This year, One World Week will focus on raising money for WaterAid, an international organisation dedicated to transforming lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. WaterAid enables the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water and sanitation. Together with improved hygiene, these basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods, forming the first essential step in overcoming poverty. They work with local partners, who understand local issues and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manage practical and sustainable projects that meet their real needs. They also work locally and internationally to change policy and practice, and ensure that water, hygiene and sanitation’s vital role in reducing poverty is recognised.

BRUNEL RAISE AND GIVE

WaterAid is the nominated charity by Brunel RAG for One World Week. RAG stands for ‘Raising and Giving’ which simply means raising money and then giving the raised money to charity. RAG isn’t only raising money within the university - it incorporates the general public, bringing together the students and the rest of the community for a good cause.

RAG is a long-honoured tradition in almost all universities around the country, and Brunel’s no different! RAG’s been running for years and has raised valuable money for different charities all over the world.

For more details and to see the latest fundraising activities and events visit the RAG website – brunelstudents.com/rag.
