    CATEGORIZATION OF MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia may be broadly divided into linear

    and non-linear categories. Linear active

    content progresses without any navigational

control for the viewer such as a cinema

    presentation. Non-linear content offers user

    interactivity to control progressas usedwitha

computer gameor used in self-paced computer

based training. Hypermedia is an example of

    non-linear content.

Multimedia presentations can be live or

recorded. A recorded presentation may allow

interactivity via a navigation system. A live

    multimedia presentation may allow

interactivity via an interaction with the

    presenteror performer.

    MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia presentations may be viewed in

person on stage, projected, transmitted, or

played locally with a media player. A

broadcast may be a live or recorded

    multimedia presentation. Broadcasts and

recordings can be either analog or digital

    electronic media technology. Digital online

multimedia may be downloaded or streamed.

Streaming multimedia may be live or on-

    demand.

  • 8/6/2019 On9 Entertainment Final

    9/32

Multimedia games and simulations may be

used in a physical environment with special

effects, with multiple users in an online

network, or locally with an offline computer,

    gamesystem, orsimulator.

    The various formatsoftechnologicalordigital

multimedia may be intended to enhance the

users' experience, for example to make it

easierand faster to convey information. Or in

entertainment or art, to transcend everyday

    experience.

    A lasershow isalive multimedia performance.

Enhanced levels of interactivity are made

possible by combining multiple formsof media

    content. Online multimedia is increasingly

    becoming object-oriented and data-driven,

    enabling applications with collaborative end-

    user innovation and personalization on

    multiple formsof contentovertime. Examples

of these range from multiple formsof content

on Web sites like photo galleries with both

    images (pictures) andtitle (text) user-updated,

    to simulations whose co-efficients, events,

    illustrations, animations or videos are

  • 8/6/2019 On9 Entertainment Final

    10/32

    modifiable, allowing the multimedia

    "experience" to be altered without

reprogramming. In addition to seeing and

    hearing, Haptic technology enables virtual

objects to be felt. Emerging technology

    involving illusionsoftasteandsmell may also

    enhancethe multimediaexperience.

    HISTORY OF THE TERM

    Theterm "multimedia" was coinedby Bob

Goldstein (later'Bobb Goldsteinn') to promotethe July 1966 opening ofhis "LightWorksat

    L'Oursin" showat Southampton, Long Island.

On August 10, 1966, Richard Albarinoof

    Variety borrowedtheterminology, reporting:

    Brainchildofsongscribe-comic Bob

    (Washington Square) Goldstein, the

    Lightworks isthelatest multi-media music-

    cum-visualstodebutasdiscothque fare.[1].

    Two yearslater, in 1968, theterm

    1987, Detroit, MI

In the intervening forty years, thewordhas

taken on different meanings. In thelate 1970s

    theterm was usedtodescribe presentations

    consisting of multi-projectorslideshowstimed

toan audiotrack. However, by the 1990s

    'multimedia'took on its current meaning.

    I

n the 1993 first edition ofM

cGraw -HillsMultimedia: Making It Work, Tay Vaughan

declared Multimedia is any combination of

text, graphic art, sound, animation, and video

that isdelivered by computer. When you allow

the user the viewerofthe project to control

    whatandwhen theseelementsaredelivered,

it is interactive multimedia. When you provide

    a structureof linked elements throughwhich

the user can navigate, interactive multimedia

    becomeshypermedia.

    WORD USAGEAND CONTEXT

Since media isthe pluralof medium, theterm"multimedia" isa pleonasm if "multi" is usedto

    describe multipleoccurrencesofonly one form

of media such as a collection of audio CDs.

    well.

    ENTERTAINMENT AND FINEARTS

In addition, multimedia is heavily used in

    the entertainment industry, especially to

develop special effects in movies andanimations. Multimedia games are a

    popular pastime and are software

programs available either as CD-ROMs or

online. Some video games also use

    multimedia features. Multimedia

applications that allow users to act ively

participate instead of just sitting by aspassive recipients of information are

    called Interactive Multimedia.

    EDUCATION

In Education, multimedia is used to produce

    computer-based training courses (popularly

called CBTs) and reference books like

encyclopedia and almanacs. A CBT lets the

    user gothroughaseriesof presentations, text

about a particular topic, and associated

    illustrations in various information formats.

Edutainment is an informal term used to

    describe combining education with

    entertainment, especially multimediaentertainment.

Learning theory in the past decade has

    expanded dramatically because of the

    introduction of multimedia.

    JOURNALISM

    Newspaper companiesalloverarealso trying

to embrace the new phenomenon by

    implementing its practices in theirwork.While

some have been slow to come around, other

major newspapers like The New York Times,

USA Today and The Washington Post aresetting the precedent forthe positioning ofthe

    newspaper industry in a globalizedworld.

    ENGINEERING

  • 8/6/2019 On9 Entertainment Final

    16/32

Software engineers may use multimedia in

    Computer Simulations for anything from

entertainment to training such as military or

    industrial training. Multimedia for software

interfaces are often done as a collaboration

    between creative professionals and software

    engineers.

    INDUSTRY

In the Industrialsector, multimedia is usedas

a way to help present information to

    shareholders, superiors and coworkers.

Multimedia is also helpful for providing

    employee training, advertising and selling

products all over the world via virtually

    unlimitedweb-basedtechnology

    MATHEMATICAL ANDSCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

    In mathematical and scientific research,

multimedia is mainly used for modelling and

simulation. For example, a scientist can look

    ata molecular modelofa particularsubstance

and manipulate it to arrive at a new

substance. Representative research can befound in journals such as the Journal of

    Multimedia.

    MEDICINE

    the UnitedStates continuedto give riseto

    internationalaudiences for Indian filmsof

    various languages especially Tamil,

    Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and

    Hindi.

India is the world's largest producer of

films. In 2009, India produced a total of

2961 films on celluloid, that include a

staggering figure of 1288 feature films.

The provision of 100% foreign directinvestment has made the Indian film

    market attractive for foreign enterprises

such as 20thCentury Fox, Sony Pictures,

    and Warner Bros.[8] Prominent Indian

The news media refers to the section of the

mass media that focuses on presenting

    current newstothe public.These include print

    media (newspapers, magazines); broadcast

    media (radio stations, television stations,

    television networks), and increasingly

    Internet-based media (WorldWideWeb pages,

    weblogs).

    ETYMOLOGY

A medium (plural media) is a carrier of

something. Common things carried by media

    include information, art, or physicalobjects.A

medium may provide transmission or storage

of information or both. The industries which

produce news and entertainment content for

the mass media are often called "the media"

(in much the same way the newspaper

industry is called "the press").In thelate 20th

century it became commonplace forthis usage

to be construedassingular ("The media is...")

    ratherthan asthetraditional plural.

    BROADCASTING

Broadcasting is the distribution of audio and

video signals (programs) to a number of

    recipients ("listeners" or "viewers") that

belong toalarge group. This group may bethe

public in general, ora relatively largeaudience

within the public. Thus, an Internet channel

may distribute textor music worldwide, while

a public address system in (for example) a

  • 8/6/2019 On9 Entertainment Final

    24/32

workplace may broadcast very limited ad hoc

soundbites to a small population within its

    range.

The sequencing of content in a broadcast is

    calledaschedule.

Television and radio programs are distributed

through radio broadcasting or cable, often

both simultaneously. By coding signals and

having decoding equipment in homes, the

    latter also enables subscription-basedchannelsand pay-per-viewservices.

    A broadcasting organization may broadcast

several programs at the same time, through

    several channels (frequencies), for example

BBC OneandTwo. On theother hand, twoor

more organizations may share a channel and

each use it during a fixed part of the day.Digital radio and digital television may also

    transmit multiplexed programming, with

    several channels compressed into one

    ensemble.

    When broadcasting isdone viatheInternetthe

    term webcasting isoften used.

Broadcasting forms a very large segment of

    the mass media.

Broadcasting to a very narrow range of

    audience is called narrowcasting.

    TELEVISION

    In a broadcastsystem (television), journalists

    or reportersarealso involvedwithediting the

video material that has been shot alongside

their research, and in working on the visual

narrative of the story. Broadcast journalists

often makean appearance in the newsstory at

    the beginning orendofthe video clip.

In television or broadcast journalism, news

analysts (also called news-casters or newsanchors) examine, interpret, and broadcast

news received from various sources of

information. Anchors present this as news,

    either videotaped or live, through

    transmissions from on-the-scene reporters

    (news correspondents).

News films ("clips") can vary in length; thereare some which may be as long as ten

minutes, others that need to fit in all the

relevant information and material in two or

    three minutes. News channelsthesedayshave

also begun tohost special documentary films

    thatstretch for muchlongerdurationsandare

able to explore a news subject or issue ingreaterdetail.

The desk persons categorise news stories

    with various formatsaccording tothe meritof

the story. Such formats include AVO, AVO

    NEWSCASTER

type of news, such as sports or weather.

    Weathercasters, also calledweather reporters,

    conditions. They gather information from

    national satellite weather services, wire

services, and local and regional weather

    bureaus. Some weathercasters are trained

    meteorologistsanddevelop theirown weather

    forecasts. Sportscasters select, write, and

deliver sports news. This may include

    interviews with sports personalities and

    A newsmagazine, sometimes called news

magazine, is a usually weekly magazine

featuring articles on current events. News

magazines generally go a little more in-depth

into stories than newspapers, trying to give

the reader an understanding of the context

    surrounding importantevents, ratherthan just

    the facts.

Many newsorganizations based in other media

also distribute news online. How much they

take advantage of the medium varies. Some

news organizations, such as the Gongwer

    NewsService, usetheWeb only or primarily.

The Internet challenges tradit ional news

organizations in several ways. They may be

losing classified ads toWeb sites, which are

often targeted by interest instead of

    geography.Theadvertising on newsWeb sites

is sometimes insufficient to support theinvestment.

Even before the Internet, technology and

perhaps other factors were dividing people's

attention, leading to more but narrower media

    outlets.

Online journalism also leads to the spread ofindependent online media such as

    openDemocracy andthe UK, Wikinewsaswell

as allowing smaller news organizations to

publish to a broad audience, such as

    mediastrike.
