Letter From The Editor It is my pleasure to welcome you to the first issue of On the Prowl for the 2012/2013 school year. Now, some of you may be saying, “Oh yes, another Prowler!” But this is not a Prowler. I’m here to explain the difference. On the Prowl is the Prowler’s hot, little sister. Where the Prowler is news and sports, On the Prowl is entertainment and arts. This is the fun side of the Prowler; we are celebrating the exciting, flirty side of students. This edition features student “Street Style,” which showcases a variety of students and their personal style. High school is the time where students re-ally find out who they are and the best way to express that is through clothing. Now is the time to celebrate our differences and embrace what makes us, us. Plus, looking at other people’s outfits can really inspire your own wardrobe! Music is going to be playing a large role this year. The editors figured, all students love music, why not write about? There will be more album re-views (this issue features Taylor Swift’s Red on page 13) and playlists for every occasion. The playlists in this edition were made by the editors, but the next edition could edition could feature playlists from you! Stay in the know on all the latest entertainment gossip and fun by fol-lowing On the Prowl on Twitter: @CYHS_OntheProwl. I would love to hear what you thought of this issue, good or bad. Do you want to see something special? What was your favorite feature? Send me feedback at [email protected], or drop letters off (addressed to me) in Mrs. Hogentogler’s room, room 165.Enjoy!Shelby McGearyEditor-in-Chief

what to wear nowBy Shelby McGearyeditor in chief Street style refers to the fash-ion of real people on the street; not supermodels, designers or celebrities. Seeing actual people pulling off trends and working new statement pieces into their wardrobe makes fashion all the more exciting and attainable for you. And you’d be surprised at how much strangers can influence your own ward-

robe; where do you think i get all my outfit inspirations? Some of my favorite go-to websites for street style photos and inspiration are:

-streetpeeper.com features street style from new York, Paris, London, tokyo and more!

-thelocals.dk Snapshots of locals living in copenhagen. So rad.

-thesartorialist.com Provides snapshots of the lat-est trends, near and far.

fashion is not simply a “girl” thing; fashion is a statement. And if you think wearing basketball shorts and t-shirts every day does not make such a statemtent, you are sadly mistaken. Which means you’re probably not making the statement that you want to. the changing of seasons is the perfect time to try out a new style. Let these pictures of your peers provide some outfit inspiration for you! fYi, gentlemen, ladies totally dig guys who dress well. Just sayin’.

Tuxedo TipsBy Amanda ChanCopy editor

inspired by Zooey de-schanel’s nails at the 2012 Golden Globes and youtube’s cutepolish “tuxedo Nail Art” video, i’ve put my own spin on the classiest way to spice up your manicure. 1. paint a base coat of white. Make sure it’s a solid, thick coat of white. Use mul-tiple layers if needed. i used Sally Hansen: Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear White on. 2. paint a black V on your nail after the white dries. i used Claire’s two Way Nail Art Brush in black. 3. in an effort to save the polish in the Nail Art Brush? i used N.y.C. Black Lace Crème nail polish to fill out the sides. i had to use two layers to get the intensity of black i wanted. 4. this step is the tricki-est. For the bowtie of the tux-edo, use the pen option of the Nail Art Brush to make an X at the base of your nail and then for the buttons, make three dots in a column, un-der the bowtie. For added ef-fect, try to make the spots get smaller as it gets close to the bottom of the nail. 5. Fill in the spaces of the X. 6. Use Claire’s two Way-Nail Art Brush in white, the pen option, to create the illu-sion of a lapel. 7. if you want to get su-per fancy, use red nail polish to make a little flower on one of the lapels. 8. Use a clear top coat to protect your tuxedo and make it shiny.

Paige’s Makeup Tips

For fair skin and fair eyes, bright col-ors and pastels work best on this skin tone. Hair colors should stay in the ashy family. Blondes with cool tones instead of golden tones work well, as well as ashy brunettes. the less makeup the better, but an even skin tone is important! For fair/beige skin and dark eyes/hair, bold colors such as red, cobalt blue and deep purples look great on this skin tone and against dark hair. Hair colors could have hints of red, or fall into the blue/black category. Beige/golden skin tones can pull off almost any hair color. Blondes should have tones of golden in it, brunettes can range from deep chocolate to reddish tones, but redheads should stay away from brassy tones and light oranges. Makeup with golden undertones com-plement this skin tone. olive skin tones are complement-ed with earthy or rich colors. Greens, browns and deep blues all compliment this darker skin tone. darker hair tends to look better on people with this skin tone, along with neutral colors of makeup. For darker skin and hair, bold colors of makeup play up darker complexions. reddish tones in the hair can work if you want to be bold, blondes make an inter-esting contrast.

Accentuating your eye color has become more fool-proof since makeup companies have started making palletes to “customize” your eyes. Tricks for blue eyed people:to accentuate blue eyes, golden and brown shades are your best bet. the choc-olate shades provide a contrast against the fair color, making the blue pop. Brownish black mascara gets the color closest to the eye as possible, and is a great trick to giv-ing the eyes an open look. this also ap-plies to blue eyed people that want their hair to assist in making their eyes stand

out. deep chocolate shades of hair pro-vide a great contrast, and less makeup around the eyes is needed to accentu-ate. Tricks for green eyed people: Browns and golds also provide a con-trast, but lining the eyes with a hunter green pencil also does the trick. Very black mascara against fair eyes makes them pop, but since there is already a large contrast, less is needed. Greenish gold and brown eyeshadows comple-ment the flecks in green eyes. Again, darker hair provides a great contrast, but lighter hair can complement fair skin. Tricks for brown eyed people: Brown eyed people are lucky in the ways of what color they can wear. Be-cause of the neutral tone of the eyes, bold colors can be worn. Brown eyes generally have flecks of color in them, so reflecting that color around the eyes will bring the flecks out. To make your brown eyes look truely brown, purple eyeliner tends to do the job. Very black mascara tends to frame the eyes better than brown; brown blends in. Tricks for hazel eyed people: if you have eyes that switch between brown and green, wearing green makeup will help control the amount of green in your eyes. Golden toned flecks can be brought out with gold and brown eyeliner. Hazel eyed people look great with dark blondes and light browns in the hair color, and eyebrows that frame their eye shape.

iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S III September, 21 2012. the date every apple follower was looking forward to. this was the date that the ‘revolutionary’ iPhone 5 would be released. With new improvements and a long list of innovative features, the iPhone 5 has been hailed as the most technologically advanced cell phone to date. But how does it stack up against android’s Galaxy S iii? You decide.

iPhone 5Pros-expanded screen size; apple has made the screen 3.5 to 4.0 inches also opting to make the screen taller rather than wider for easier use. -High-speed; With Lte (Long term evolu-tion) and 4G the iPhone 5 is now faster than apple’s iPad 2.-Light-weight; the phone now weighs 3.95 ounces as opposed to the 4.9 ounces of the iPhone 4.Cons-New charging cord; a smaller charger port now requires apple users to use costly adapters in order to connect the iPhone 5 to all of their old apple accessories.-New phone backs; the aluminum backs on the iPhone 5 are more easily scratched than the glass backs of the other iPhones. -New Maps; incorrect labeling of landmarks and street names along with bugs in the new google app is leaving iPhone 5 users lost and angry with the new “updated maps.”

Samsung Galaxy S iiiPros-New allShare technology; makes sharing photos and videos with other devices like PC’s, tablets and tV’s much easier by a wireless connection to connect to allShare enabled devices. -New S Beam; another feature that allows android users to share photos and videos by placing their phone back-to-back with another phone; it works with the NfC and Wifi Direct instead of the much slower Blu-etooth. -New battery; the Galaxy S iii has a re-movable battery that can be taken out if the battery starts to act up. it is also able to last up to 10 hours with video and browsing.Cons-Phone size; Boasting a very large 4.8 inch screen this larger display can be harder to hold for those with smaller hands. -New screen; the phone is plastic and can easily be broken. the screen can also be prone to crack.

Album reviews

ByKristen ShipleySTAFF WRITER

By Erin O’NeillONlINE EdITOR-IN-chIEF

She turned in her trade-mark curls, veered down the path of pop and added a splash of color. On October 22, Taylor Swift released her fourth album, “Red.” The in-nocent, small town coun-try singer I knew in fifth grade has kept her themes of love the same, but has altered her singing style and improved the lyrics. Although some think she is no longer country and is falling into the deep pit of pop, she still has a subtle country sound underly-ing most songs; she has created a new genre: pop country. Yes, the songs are cen-tered around young love and breakups, but there is a sense of maturity and less straightforward “I’m falling for you,” or “I’m so over you,” theme (despite the ever-annoying “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” single). Along with “State of Grace,” the duet with Snow Patrol’s Gary Light-body really adds to “Red,” as Swift toys with the idea of soft rock. There is also a duet with Ed Sheeran, “Everything

Has Changed.” Swift’s ballads, “Sad Beautiful Tragedy” and “Treacher-ous,” are lyrically enchant-ing and are countered with her upbeat pop vocals in “22” and “I Knew You Were Trouble.” Something special that I always loved about Swift is the fact that she writes her own songs. You don’t get that intimacy from most artists. She has matured from being a 15-year-old high school freshman to being a 22-year-old dis-covering what she wants out of life and love. Along with the lyrics, Swift has matured. Just look at her previous work from “Tay-lor Swift” to “Fearless” to “Speak Now” and, cur-rently, “Red.” Swift has slowly put herself together and found herself within her music to become the person and singer she has meant to be. To put Taylor Swift’s album in a few words - Red is my new favorite color.

“I promise that I know you very well/Your eyes never lie even if they tell.” Contrary to other rappers who brag about money, fame and women, Ken-drick Lamar chronicles his life growing up in the rough streets of Compton, California on his new al-bum, “good kid, m.A.A.d city” (m.A.A.d stands for: my Angry Adolescent di-vide or my Angels on An-gels dust). The 25-year-old rapper, also known as K-Dot, uses his thought-provok-ing rhymes accompanied by the recordings of fam-ily and friends to vividly portray a less-than-perfect childhood. Lyrics from his songs detail events throughout his teenage life such as the violent world he was surrounded by and conflicting ad-vice from his parents and friends. Throughout the album, he varies his voice to show his diversity and commitment to his mes-sage, while representing the West Coast. The album opens with a prayer and an eerie beat

on the song ‘Sherane a.k.a Master Splinter’s Daugh-ter’ which describes one of his relationships and the realization of the kind of people who surround him. The song ‘The Art of Peer Pressure,’ reflects on how much of an influence his friends’ lifestyle had on his own. Lamar takes a break from his childhood world in the song ‘Poetic Justice’ featuring Drake by talking about a grown-up relation-ship with Sherane. Closing the album are songs of re-flection, of both of himself and society. These include ‘Swimming Pools,’ ‘Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst’ and ‘Real.’Fans of hip-hop music will be impressed with the new album, “good kid, m.A.A.d city” (Deluxe Version at Target, $11.99). If you like what he’s done, waiting in the wings are tracks Lamar has done with artists such as Lady Gaga and J. Cole, which will be released in the near future.

Cold weather, hot spots

With temperatures drop-ping, activities are limited in York. Here are some places to go to keep you entertained during the frigid winter months:

Laserdome in Lancaster, PaBring some buddies or a date and battle your way to victo-ry by shooting your synthetic laser gun at the glowing body packs of your opponents.

Franks Theatresunlike other theatres around here, Franks has a conve-nient, up scaled arcade and café. Franks has comfortable reclining seats and arm rests where you can enjoy the lat-est flick.

Avalanche ExpressLocated behind Heritage Hills, the large slope is per-fect for snow tubing. Wheth-er at night or during the day, speeding down the smooth, steep hill while clinging onto

your friend’s tubes.

New York City Bus TripWith tons to do in just one day, there is never a dull mo-ment in the city of lights, es-pecially during the holiday season. it’s easy to tour, get your Christmas shopping done and see a Broadway show in just one day. You can ice skate in Central Park, witness the lighting of the Christmas tree in rockefell-er center November 28 and saunter down 5th avenue while drooling over gifts that seem so out of reach.

Rocky Ridge, Christmas MagicWith the record breaking number of over 100,000 lights and attractions, rocky ridge lights up the whole town from Novem-ber to January. this spot is perfect for you and a date to stroll through, or a place where a group of friends can go to run around.
