On Friday we celebrated Diwali.

Lily from Kahikatea is the person of the week

this week! Lily showed great leadership last

Friday during Diwali, operating the henna

station like a seasoned pro. Lily in general is a

reliable and trustworthy student and always

looks out for the younger students in the

playground. Keep it up Lily!

Kia ora koutou

This morning we celebrated our school Feast Day (which fell on a Sunday this year), with a school Mass.

Thank you to Mrs Jacobs and her team for preparing our Mass. Thank you also to Otari Catholic

Women’s League, who made a donation of Rosary Beads for each child, and led us all in a decade of the

Rosary at Mass. Your child has been asked to take good care of these beads, as a Taonga—a treasure.

Diwali & Government House

Last Friday, we celebrated the Indian festival of Diwali with fun activities for the children to choose from.

Thank you to Mrs Sohani for organising this, to our parent helpers for supporting this event, and to

Vikashni for supplying our staff with some lovely Diwali goodies to eat this week!

Yesterday a selection of 12 children represented our school at the official welcome for the President of

Ireland, at Government House. They were briefly caught on the TVNZ News being greeted by the

President, in response to their Gaelic greeting to him. The children said, “Dia dhuit” (may God be with

you), and the Irish President responded, “Dia’s Mhuire dhuit” (may God and Mary be with you)—thank

you Miss Purcell, for teaching them this greeting. Thank you also for the parents who supported this

event.

Staff for 2018

We are really happy to have confirmed our fulltime teaching staff for 2018. We welcome back many of

our staff, and we will say a fond farewell to some. Our fulltime classroom teachers for 2018 will be Pip

Cook, Ingrid Jacobs, Jen Denham, Joanne Purcell, Pallavi Sohani and Michael Coles. Later this year, we

will be bidding a sad farewell to Josh McDonald, who has decided to ‘spread his wings and fly the coop’

in 2018. We wish Josh well in the next, exciting step in his career.

We are still working on confirming our part time teachers, and support staff, and sorting out which

teachers will be teaching at which levels. When this is confirmed, you will be kept informed.

Good Companions Club

Throughout this year, the Year 7&8 students have kindly helped out with the regular events organised

by this group of Senior citizens—by setting up and clearing away the furniture in the hall. Thank you to

Mr McDonald, and the student for offering this service.

Graffiti

Unfortunately we arrived back to school after the long weekend to face a good deal of graffiti on our

walls and doors! However, we were most impressed with the Wellington City Council’s response to our

call for help. Within a few hours, they had removed all of the graffiti. Unfortunately, this required

painting over our school rules mural, so we will get onto a new mural when we are able to.

Athletics on the go!

You may recall that our school athletics day had to be cancelled due to the weather, twice, in Term 1.

Because of this, we have needed to trial all of the children in Year 4-8 who were interested in being part

of the Western Zone event. In order to be part of this event, we prefer that the participants are

competitive and able in at least 2-3 events — so as not to be sitting around for the whole day. Thank

you to Miss Cook and the teachers for spending extra time to sort our team out.
