FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020
THE GOOD NEWSDO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? REFLECTION BY STEVE DYER
Dear Friends,
The Lord is near, rejoice! Have you ever viewed the Nativity of our Lord through the eyes of the Magi? Why did these wise men leave everything behind to journey toward the bright star in Bethlehem? Any trip or vacation, even life itself forces us to follow certain paths and pick a destination at times – somewhere we have never been or somewhere we would like to return. Through these choices we experience the newness that awaits us. We discover things along the way about ourselves and our fellow travelers.
What did the Magi expect to find when they found the baby Jesus? Matthew 2:10-11 says, “They were overjoyed at seeing the star,” and “they prostrated themselves and did Him homage.” They proceeded to give Him their treasures. Are we like the Magi, willing to leave our old lives behind to seek God and love Him above all else?
God calls us to set out on a faith adventure. He knows the challenge of the darkness in this world. After all, His Son lived it unto death. But, on this fourth Sunday of Advent we are hopeful and joyful like the Magi of the East. The newborn King is coming! St. Paul tells the Thessalonians, “May the God of peace make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Yes, we need to heed Paul’s message of repentance. And furthermore, let us be expressions of light and love this Advent and Christmas season.
Wherever life takes us, may we reveal our God-given treasures to others without expecting anything in return. Prepare the way of the Lord!
In His grace,Steve Dyer

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 20, 2020
PRO-LIFE NEWS
Each year during Advent, we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Christ our Savior at Christmas. As we anticipate this joyful celebration, we recall the journey of the Holy Family from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Far from home, poor, and in great need, Mary and Joseph find refuge in a simple stable. But this humble setting among the livestock soon welcomes the heavenly host of angels and the infant Jesus Himself.Today, women in our own communities are pregnant, poor, perhaps without a home, and in great need. They may feel alone, scared, and overwhelmed, not knowing where to turn. In challenging circumstances, expectant mothers need a refuge of their own. Like the Holy Family, they may be reliant on the kindness of others. This year, may the story of the first Christmas inspire us to reach out to mothers in need. May we proactively seek to offer loving support and encouragement as they prepare to welcome their children. By answering this call, may we help mothers experience the joy, hope, and peace brought by the infant Jesus. And may we, too, share in and bear witness to the miracle of new life.
THE FEST 2021 INTERNSHIPCalling all college students looking for a paid summer internship! The FEST (www.theFEST.us) is looking for summer interns to make this year’s event the best FEST yet! We are looking for students with interests in theology, business marketing
and communications, event planning, or logistics management to join the team that puts together our annual Diocesan Family Festival. Interns will be a part of a fast-paced team and will play a critical role in the marketing, planning and coordination of annual event for thousands of people. Interns will provide support and have responsibilities including public speaking, marketing, mailings, digital and social media, press releases, logistics, event planning, and more. Interns must have strong people skills, work ethic, critical thinking, organizational skills, and reliable transportation. For more information or to apply, please send your resume to [email protected] by January 10.
BLESSING OF A CHRISTMAS MANGER OR NATIVITY SCENE
In its present form the custom of displaying figures depicting the birth of Jesus Christ owes its origin to St. Francis of Assisi, who made the Christmas crèche or manger for Christmas Eve of
1223. The blessing of the Christmas manger or nativity scene may take place on the Vigil of Christmas or at another suitable time. When the manger is set up in the home, it is appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another family member.
All make the sign of the cross as the leader says:Our help is in the name of the Lord.R/. Who made heaven and earth.
One of those present or the leader reads a text of sacred Scripture, for example, Luke 2:1 (lines 1-8) or Isaiah 7:10 (lines 10-15, the birth of Emmanuel).Reader: The Gospel of the Lord.R/. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
The leader prays with hands joined:God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary.To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.Lord, bless all who look upon this manger; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise our thoughts to him, who is God-with-us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever.
R/. Amen.– From Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers

■ LIGHT THE ADVENT WREATH
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit … Come Lord Jesus, be our light! Help us to trust in you, as Joseph trusted in God.
■ READ THE GOSPEL for the Fourth Sunday of Advent (Cycle A) Matthew 1:18–24
“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him …”
■ REFLECT WITH A STORY
Joseph and Mary were engaged to be married when Joseph found out that Mary was going to have a baby. After hearing this news, Joseph decided to call off the marriage. But an angel appeared to him in a dream and told him to stay with Mary and take care of her. The angel said the baby was God’s son and should be named Jesus.
This was not at all what Joseph had planned! The angel’s message was so unusual, and would require so much from him, that it would have been easier for Joseph to pretend he didn’t hear it. Instead, he trusted God and did what the angel asked, even though it would change his life.
Like Joseph, a group of Dominican sisters in India had to change their plans in order to respond to God’s call. They arrived in India in 1954, intent on opening a new hospital. But at that time, many men were losing their factory jobs, which meant that many women were looking for work so they could take care of their families. The Dominican sisters saw this, and instead of founding a hospital, they started St. Mary’s, a sewing and embroidery center, where women could come and work, and be a part of a supportive community.
Because these nuns trusted in God’s plan rather than sticking to their own, they were able to help Keechi, an Indian woman whose husband and older daughter had passed away. With the money she makes through sewing and embroidery, she is able to send her daughter, Reena, to school.
The Dominican sisters’ example invites us to consider how God may be calling us—like he called Joseph—to trust in him enough to do things we wouldn’t have necessarily planned for ourselves.
