Today, a company’s capacity to innovate has become an absolute necessity to be able to successfully com-pete on the market. But what does innovate mean? For OMET, it means the continuous research and fi ne tuning of solutions in order to live up to customer demands. And, seeking to anticipate these, wherever possible. It involves a commitment that requires con-tinuous investment into applied research, as well as a sharp eye for development facing the demands of our customers and the fi nal marketing of their products. And, with our horizons spread all around the world, it means dealing with consumers who share extremely different trends and living habits. But this, at the same time, is the challenge of a company truly aiming for international status. What’s more, we are fi rmly committed to results: this is recently proven, with OMET receiving the 2005 Flexotech International Print & Innovations Awards for the best innovation in the printing sector. On a more general level, by reading the numerous editions of Archipelago you can disco-ver and get to know the many new products we have developed over the last few months, from the napkin machine sector through to converting, the market in which the demand for innovation is now the driving force. OMET intends to continue along this path of development, hand in hand with its customers and on the back of its success.

to costante nella ricerca applicata e nell’innovazione.

topping the printing and converting machine market at the FLEXOTECH
INTERNATIONAL PRINT & INNOVATION AWARDS 2005.
The prize was awarded by a specialist jury, acknowledging the OMET

materiale (carta, carta autoadesiva, cartoncino
gruppo hot foil, senza produrre alcuno scarto.
materia prima.
Holo-Foil King unit uses foil saver technology,
with the possibility to deposit up to 6 holo-
gram tracks, each with independent pitch.
The unit allows the in line production of
hologram labels and fl exible packaging from
a normal roll of material (paper, self-adhesive
paper, card or plastic fi lm) to which the holo-
gram material is attached.
This creates a packaging with attractive light
effects which are also diffi cult to copy, the
presence of the hologram eliminating the
possibility of counterfeiting.
Tested at a speed of over 80 metres per
minute, the OMET Holo-Foil King unit is
also suitable for “foil saver” operation, or
rather the deposit of the metallic fi lm by hot
foil unit, without producing any waste. Foil
advancement is timed according to the length
of the image to be hot printed, rather than
based on the pitch between the two images.
This allows a substantial saving on raw mate-
rial costs.

FLEXY-S: THE JEWEL IN OMET’S CROWN
OMET
stampa.
risoluzione dell’encoder in asse al motore.
Ma le novità non si fermano qui. Flexy-S è in-
Since its appearance on the market, it has
been recognised as the best machine for
narrow web fl exographic printing with regard
to value for money.
Today, Flexy continues with the new electronic
version with brushless servomotors, the Flexy-
S: an innovation in the further improvement
of quality and precision printing.
Through the insertion of two servomotors for
each element – one for the plate-carrier axis,
the other for the printing unit – with Flexy-
S it is now possible to print at an infi nitely
variable pitch and with precise colour control,
thanks to the resolution of the encoder on
the motor axis.
But the novelty doesn’t stop there. Flexy-S is
in fact designed to allow the in line insertion
of the patented Twin Cut unit for self-adhe-
sive labels, with which all print formats are
carried out without the need to change the

dei cilindri magnetici. Il gruppo è dotato di
sistema automatico di controllo registro,
l’evacuazione dello sfrido standard a tensione
materiale.
avere gruppi fl exo, serigrafi ci, stampa a caldo
magnetic cylinders. The unit is equipped with
an automatic register control system, with
tension controlled standard waste disposal
and programmable operation from the
control panel. This allows the advantageous
use of rotational pressing effectively and
economically, with just two pairs of magnetic
cylinders.
Another benefi t of the new model is the pos-
sibility to work with a wide range of paper
and plastic materials with thicknesses from 11
to 400 microns. Working with plastic fi lm, the
press can be moved thanks the independent
servo-assisted motors, to compensate for any
light distortion of the material.
On top of this, it has an internet connection
for remote assistance as well as an automatic
register control built into the machine. Its
compactness and the stability of the regis-
ter allow a greater ease of printing without
producing material waste. Finally, the pos-
sibility of combining fl exo, silk-screen and
hot and cold press units in-line guarantees
an extreme fl exibility of production, using the

brevissimi. La drastica riduzione degli scarti
di materiale assicura vantaggi sulla redditività
generale. Infi ne l’interfaccia intuitiva consente
all’operatore un facile ed effi ciente controllo
di tutti i parametri.
FLEXY-S: IL GIOIELLO DI CASA OMET ORA CON LA TECNOLOGIA DEI SERVOMOTORI

concept of a hybrid machine and production
in one single stroke, from the roll to the fi nal
packaging.
From among the most advanced solutions
of the Flexy-S, that of particular help to the
operator is the innovative control console,
which has an ergonomic grip (Easy-Adjust)
with which print register movement can be
regulated with maximum precision.
To speed up operation and cleaning proce-
dures, a special inking unit has been incor-
porated on a removable drawer with double
fl oor support: a solution that offers maximum
accessibility and facilitates anilox, blade and
plate-carrier cylinder replacement.
Flexy-S is also distinguished for its high speed
production, which can reach 200 metres per
minute, on top of its quickness of operation
and very short register times. The drastic
reduction of material waste is guaranteed to
benefi t general profi tability. Finally, the intui-
tive interface allows the operator simple and
effi cient control over all parameters.

Quindi,
nel 1990, viene acquistata la prima 6 colori,
capace anche di stampare a caldo. L’anno
successivo si costituisce il primo nucleo del-

ALL CARRIED OUT INTERNALLY.
Founded in 1963 as an offset and typog-
raphy company, over its forty year history
Artes Grafi cas Modernas SA, today led by its
chairman Fernando Leiro, has indeed fol-
lowed a path of continuous development,
based on a strategic vision through which it
has opted to invest constantly in technology,
organisation and customer service, in order
to provide wide-scope solutions to the highly
varied and complex requirements of industry,
starting with the food, cosmetics, pharma-
ceutical industries and homecare products,
which constitute its main outlet markets.
From 1980 the growth trend of the company
started to increase more and more rapidly, in
line with market demands: that was the year
the fi rst narrow-web system for printing self-
adhesive tape from the reel was installed.
Then, in 1990, the fi rst 6 coloured system,
also capable of hot printing, was acquired.
The following year, the fi rst unit of the cur-
rent Material Division was established, today
equipped with a control laboratory and six
different production lines for the manufac-

processo produttivo, interamente gestito
secondo procedure ISO 9001, risponde anche
ai requisiti della GMP (Good Manufacturing
Producers).
mative della Food and Drugs Administration e
pria penetrazione all’estero; viene quindi inau-
all’esterno e potendo garantire un controllo
completo del processo, soprattutto in caso di
lancio di nuovi prodotti”. Alla realizzazione di

“We are unique in our fi eld” explains chair-
man Fernando Leiro.
“The only company in our sector that inte-
grates label manufacture with the manufac-
ture of the self-adhesive materials required
to make them.
And we are able to cover up to 90 percent
of our requirements, thus guaranteeing the
customer obstacle –free supply.
This way we can also operate with the
maximum of security and assurance in sec-
tors like the food or pharmaceutical indus-
tries: our manufacturing process, managed
entirely according to ISO 9001 procedures,
also adheres to the requirements of the GMP
(Good Manufacturing Producers).
Furthermore, rather than using PVC, we use
fi lm compatible with packaging material
recycling and also hypo-allergenic, non-
toxic water-based adhesives that adhere to
the norms of the Food and Drugs Admin-
istration and of the Canadian Standard
Association”.
CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Other important new directions were taken
in the Nineties: Artes Grafi cas Modernas SA
entered the promotional materials segment
and developed its own penetration abroad;
the Machines division was then opened,
which deals with the manufacture and mar-
keting of label application equipment and
solutions.
Then in 1997, the customer-geared service
was completed with the setting up of a
complete Pre-printing department, where
graphics are developed, punches are made,
colour and text corrections are realised, laser,
Iris and Chromalin tests are carried out, fi lms
and silk screens are made: “This too is a
choice”, the chairman continues, “explained
by our will to guarantee the customer short
response times, without having to outsource
and giving us total control over the proc-
ess, especially in the case of new product
launches”.

novazione. Grazie all’introduzione di tecno-
logie digitali, vengono proposte soluzioni
rotocalco, stampa a caldo, laminazione).
gruppo rotocalco.
questi pochi mesi.
L’esperienza che i nostri tecnici stanno svi-
luppando nel lavoro quotidiano con questa
macchina ci permetterà, entro breve, di
sfruttare fi no in fondo le notevoli potenzialità
stampa. Sotto questo aspetto, va sottolineato
il prezioso lavoro di formazione al nostro
personale garantito dai tecnici OMET a partire

OMET IS MAXIMUM VERSATILITY.
Even in the last few years we have been at
the forefront of innovation.
With the introduction of digital technology,
integrated solutions that go from data acqui-
sition and processing to the realisation of
the printed product can be offered, without
the need to resort to intermediate backing
materials and fi lms.
Also, graphic products with high added
value can be made.
The application of fl exible labels is also
offered. From the manufacturing point of
view, Artes Grafi cas Modernas SA upgraded
and developed its range of machines with
the introduction of new systems capable of
covering all printing technology
requirements (offset, fl exography,
screen printing, rotary printing, hot
printing, lamination).
It was in this context that our
relationship with OMET began, with
the acquisition of an 8-colour fl exo
Varyfl ex, designed to take two screen print-
ing units and a rotary unit.
A very positive relationship, as the chairman
Fernando Leiro has himself stressed: “We
are already highly satisfi ed with the results
achieved with the Varyfl ex after these fi rst
few months.
The experience our technicians are accumu-
lating in their daily work with this machine
will soon allow us to take full advantage of
the potential in terms of versatility that it
affords the user, combining as it does such
different printing systems.
In this regard, we should stress the invalu-
able training our staff have received from
OMET technicians from the installation phase
up to the present time”.

medium web fl exographic rotary screen print-

now present in the cardboard cartons section.
OMET is one of he pioneers of the new trend:
its machinery make the “one shot” produc-
tion cycle and its assembly line operations far
more competitive, with just one operation
required from reel the fi nished packaging.
And Varyfl ex is at the summit of this techno-
logical revolution.

commessa come a sé stante. A questo pro-
practical and economic solution to the many
special packaging requests made by niche
customers. The decision to include fl exo
has resulted from the need to produce low
numbers at contained cost, as is the case with
pharmaceutical industry customers, whose
large orders include such a range of variations
that each project is regarded as a seperate
order.

riata, negli Stati Uniti d’America e in Argen-
tina. E a breve nuove installazioni si avranno
anche in India e in Indonesia.
CONFIGURAZIONE APERTA E POLI-
VALENTE
Nata come macchina tipicamente fl essogra-
fi ca, oggi OMET Varyfl ex si presenta come
una linea ibrida polivalente, aperta alle più
eclettiche confi gurazioni articolate secondo
Quattro, in particolare, i gruppi
stampa intercambiabili previsti. A cominciare
dal gruppo “Flexo”, dotato di due motori
indipendenti e del sistema sleeve con carrello
d’inchiostrazione estraibile e bloccaggio auto-
matico.
variabile grazie all’utilizzo della tecnologia
gearless. Il gruppo “Rotocalco” è utilizzato
per trasportare in grande quantità inchiostri
metallici a base solvente o colle particolari,
etichette e imballaggi fl essibili
ologrammati ma anche per
la funzione “saver”, depo-
sito del fi lm metallizzato per

OMET has various Varifl ex installations for
the manufacture of folding cartons through-
out the world: apart from its installations in
Italy, OMET has a presence in China at one of
largest tobacco industry groups with a super-
accessorized Varyfl ex, in the United States of
America and in Argentina. And new instal-
lations are soon to be opened in India and
Indonesia too.
OPEN AND MULTIPURPOSE CONFI-GURATION.
Created as a typically fl exographic machine,
today OMET Varyfl ex presents as a multipur-
pose hybrid line, suitable for the most versa-
tile confi gurations which are set according to
production requirements. Thanks to its easy
application to different accessory units, to its
servo motor drives for all the printing units
and to its universal trolley, OMET Varyfl ex
allows different printing processes to be com-
bined. Production fl exibility is not therefore
a diffi cult objective but is an easily attainable
goal. There are four interchangeable printing
units in particular: Starting with the “Flexo”
unit, with two independent engines and a
sleeve system with removable ink trolley and
automatic blocking. The “Silkscreen Printing
Cast”, with independent motorised system,
allows the creation of all intermediate 304.8
to 609.9 mm prints at a variable rate thanks
to gearless technology. “The Rotogravure
Printing” unit is used to transport large quan-
tities of solvent-based metallic ink or certain
glues in order to achieve lamination effects
which cannot be obtained through fl exo
printing.
Finally, the revolutionary “Holo-foil King” unit,
recommended for the in-line production of
labels and fl exible, holographic packaging and
also for its foil “saver” function which deposits
metallic fi lm per individual hot foil unit.

ad aziende più piccole. Nel complesso oggi

by its Chairman, Beniamo Moriniello, using a

Nevertheless, this “creature” has already

particular success in the sector of mineral
water and conserves for highly prestigious
food names – such as Fiuggi, Uliveto, Roc-

smaller companies. Today, the Fisciano factory

– afferma Moriniello – Ed Etitalia nasce come

unit, scheduled for the end of 2006. The secret
behind this success? Beniamino Moriniello
has no doubt: “We approach the market not
simply as label manufacturers, but as provid-
ers of solutions and useful products”. Follow-
ing this logic, Etitalia was born and has been
developed, up to reaching its present status:
“Our family of three generations operates
within the printing sector – states Moriniello
– and Etitalia was born as a branch of a typo-
graphic company, founded by my grandfather
and later managed by my father, until my
brother and I took over. We also printed labels:

And halfway through 1998, Etitalia was born:
“We initially concentrated on offset printing.
– continued Moriniello – Over the course of
three years, we have acquired two 6-colour
offset printing machines, the second capable
of printing in UV with traditional inks. A real
novelty for our sector. We are thus able to pro-
vide the client with a complete service. Firstly
preparing a preprint and then a post-print,
capable of resolving all the client’s problems
and eventually providing them with a complete
product: from reading the CD-ROM through to
the delivery of the printed and packaged prod-
uct. All due to the increased mechanisation, to
guarantee large numbers and fast turnaround
of orders”. Following the same service logic,
Etitalia has also become specialised in the man-
ufacture of folding cartons and clusters, special
wrappers used particularly in promotions to
combine numerous products in a single pack-

has applied itself to fl exographic printing. With

produzioni a bobina.
suoi clienti”.

really positive results. This shows an evolution
in the logic of both technological development
and of the development of market demands: “I
am convinced that fl exographic technology, in
the label industry, will be the technology of the
future. The possibilities it offers are infi nitely
superior to the offset printing machine: lively,
more brilliant colours, more attractive ends,
fl exibility in the use of supports, large roll pro-
duction. It is a cultural change that is gathering
speed. The label represents the most important
sales vehicle for a product, in its appearance
to the consumer at the front of a shelf”. And
OMET, with its Varyfl ex, has undoubtedly con-
tributed to the growth of Etitalia in this tech-
nology: “We are truly satisfi ed with the OMET
machine. But we are more generally satisfi ed
with the ongoing collaborative relationship
that has established itself with this company.
A true partner in continuous evolution, whose
growth creates a development opportunity for

other splicers in their factory, the Martin equipment is
simpler and easier to work with.
Zhou Dongyan, of OMET’s Shanghai offi ce, agrees.
“We are very satisfi ed with Martin’s equipment and

Palladio Industrie Grafi che Cartotecniche,
a member of the Copapharm Alliance, has
installed an OMET Varyfl ex to serve its carton
customers in the pharmaceutical, food, and
beauty care markets. The installation at Pal-
ladio’s production plant in Thiene, northern
Italy, is explained by the company’s General
Manager, Livio Padrin: “Like most carton

ogy and a fresh approach to the way we serve

produzione vera e propria, soprattutto lavori a
valutato diverse tecnologie alternative prima
settore farmaceutico normalmente ci passano

production, such is the prevalence of short
run work, and the demand by customers for
zero stockholding. With offset print quality
as the benchmark, Palladio evaluated alterna-
tive technology before opting for fl exo.
“The driving force behind our choice of fl exo
was its ability to produce short run work cost
effectively. Typically our pharmaceutical cus-
tomers place large orders but with so many
detail variations that each is a job in itself.”
commented Mr Padrin.
The decision to work with OMET was obvi-
ous. Located in nearby Lecco, the press

macchina a nastro stretto completamente
fustella rotativa in linea.
supplier for such pioneering investment, but it
also offered signifi cant technological features,
including servo drive, and interchangeable
print units.
Marco Calcagni, Sales Director of OMET
explained: “In 2001 we were keen to produc-
tion test our prototype Varyfl ex and had been
discussing cartons for some time with Pallad-
io, who agreed to take the machine.” In April
2002 the 20” six-colour Varyfl ex was installed.
It was the fi rst servo driven narrow web fl exo
press on the market specifi cally designed for
carton production, and was fi tted with sleeve
technology and an inline rotary die cutter.
Three years on the decision was made to
update the installation, and a new 26”
Varyfl ex 670C, fi tted with eight UV fl exo
print units, cold foil, and reverse side printing
was commissioned. To cater for customer
preference, the latest Varyfl ex is fi tted with an
OMET sheeter that incorporates a new system
known as ‘fl y cutting’. This permits the cut
off length to be varied electronically, and
gives an easy adjustment of sheet size up to a

novativo. Questa soluzione permette infatti di
tagliare lunghezze variabili elettronicamente e
zare bobine fi no a 1800 mm di diametro. Lo
svolgitore stesso è equipaggiato con sistema
festoon con compensatore di inerzia e 2
posizioni, gruppo svolgitore con soluzione a
sbalzo, sollevatore bobina. Il controllo dello
svolgitore, giunzione materiale e controllo
di tensione sono concentrati in un’unica
posizione.
Padrin riesce oggi a comparare un set-up
ne dello scarto, specialmente nello start-up,
maximum 670 x 810mm (26” x 32”).
To maximise output with continuous run-
ning on the Varyfl ex, Palladio chose a Martin
Automatic MBX butt splicer, with a maximum
speed of 244 m/min and the capacity to han-
dle 1800 mm rolls. The system is fi tted with
a Martin inertia compensated festoon system
and a two position, cantilevered unwind with
Martin’s lift and load device. Control of un-
wind, splicing, and tension control are all cen-
trally located. Mr Padrin now compares set
up times of 15-20 minutes for the OMET with
more than 90 minutes for any of the compa-
ny’s Heidelbergs. Typically, each shift on the
OMET sees an automatic roll change every 50
minutes on an 1800 mm roll (equivalent to
around 6,000 B1 sheets) of 330-450 micron
board. The Martin roll changer also allows
for part used rolls to be quickly and easily
handled off and on the press.
One area of improvement is reduced waste,
particularly on start up, which at Copapharm
runs at around 3% of the sales value of the
product, (split approximately 2:1, printing:
converting). Mr Padrin says Palladio has al-
ready reduced these fi gures by 50% with the

OMET, and he is aiming for a 65% reduction.
Board, of course, is 5% cheaper to buy on the
reel, and, having converting processes inline
with printing, a number of extra machine
make-readies are avoided. Printing and con-
verting on the reel also maximises layout, but
chiefl y using a process that spends more time
on production than make ready, is the major
benefi t as far as Palladio is concerned.
The only factor that decides whether Palladio
uses its Heidelbergs or the OMET is the for-
mat size and lay down of the work. Shorter
runs work better on the OMET, and with no
discernable difference in quality between the
two processes, Mr Padrin tends to optimise
production according to shift pattern.
With a typical job of 3000-4000 sheets (B1
size), which equates to 2500-2700m of
board, the optimal run length is 30 minutes
on the OMET, which will reduce to around 24
minutes when the high pile delivery unit is fi t-
ted, and the press can be ramped up to 110
m/min production speed. Although presently
delivering sheets off the OMET, the medium
term aim is to introduce rotary die cutting.
“We need to phase in new technology for our
customers one step at a time – in the end,
price pressure will dictate rotary production,
and we are well placed to take advantage of
this,” commented Mr Padrin, who predicts a
major change in attitude to carton convert-
ing in Europe over the next decade. “It is a
process that is well accepted elsewhere in the
world but has always been scorned in Europe
for reasons of quality. I believe the tide is
turning, and when it does, the effect will be
dramatic,” he concluded.

in linea con la stampa viene evitato l’utilizzo
di ulteriori macchine nel processo. Stampa e
m/min.

Then you can move toward the North, in

do wrong to the legend, it is enough to visit
both, in the neighboring quarters Acquate

the fearful parish priest, is located always in
Olate, as well as the building of Don Rodrigo,
the squire of the village, erected on a hillock
identifi ed in the so-called Zucco di Olate. A
villa with an embattled tower placed on that
hill is found in the picture by a Painter from
Brescia of the Seventeenth Century, Aragone
Aragonio, for the fi rst time. The building still
exists today, even if it has changed much after
its reconstruction in 1937.
Near Acquate, on the road to Germanedo,
you can recognize a small chapel indicated
as the tabernacle of the “Bravi”, where the
encounter between the “braves”, actually
criminals in Don Rodrigo’s pay, and Don
Abbondio is set.
The search for the Innominato Castle will
be the pretext for a pleasant walk over the
township Vercurago instead, approximately

set of ruins that the tradition identifi es as the
remains of the famous palace. What is more,
here a construction rouse, known since the
‘600 as Tremasasso (stone trembler) due to
the hiding bandits. Lecco by Manzoni is not
only the town Lecco in the novel, but also
the town Lecco of the writer. His presence is

“Cartiera Stefani & Lazzareschi”, specializzata
in Europa. Non è dunque un caso che nella
“mission” del gruppo si affermi: “Soddisfare
le esigenze dei consumatori, “leggere” le loro
preferenze in una visione europea. Lavorare
important region in Italy for paper. It was here
in 1966, through a venture of Sir Emi Stefani
and Sir Giuseppe Lazzareschi, that the group’s
fi rst company was founded – the “Cartiera
Stefani & Lazzareschi” – specialising in 1-ply
folded paper, which was followed just three
years later by the production of the 2-ply
“Fine Paper”. Another three years on, and
the group began to take shape with “Sof-
fass”, a paper manufacturing unit for branded
products, and then in 1979 with “Delicarta”,
aimed at production for foreign markets.
Since then, it has seen a succession of entre-
preneurial initiatives, following a dynamic
development which, particularly after 1994
– in which Luigi Lazzareschi came in to
succeed his father – has positioned Sofi -
del among Europe’s elite. It is therefore no
accident that the group’s “mission” states:
“Satisfy the demands of consumers, “read-
ing” their preferences with a European vision.
Work for the market and learn from it the
requirements of change, introducing prod-
ucts that offer greater performance”. Europe:
the new platform of prestige. The Sofi del
group has been spreading its wings on the
European consumer market now for over
decade, particularly since 1997, when the
foundation of Delipapier in France initiated
the group’s strong process of internation-
alization: “To set up the production plant

– afferma
Angelo Del Carlo, direttore del gruppo Sofi del
– In questo complesso, di ben 76 mila metri
quadrati, abbiamo introdotto, infatti, la prima
macchina continua all’estero, che allora ci
quista dell’Europa: “Nel 2003 completammo
l’investimento polacco avviando in Delitissue
una macchina per la produzione di 25 mila
tonnellate annue e sempre in tale anno
impiantammo a Cardiff la ‘Intertissue Ltd’,
dove quest’anno installeremo una macchina
da 60 mila tonnellate l’anno”. -continua Del
Carlo- Nel frattempo in Italia vengono acqui-
site: Fibrocellulosa, Cartiera di Monfalcone
e Imbalpaper; nello stesso periodo Delicarta
ottiene il prestigioso marchio di qualità ecolo-
gica europea Ecolabel. Continua l’espansione
sui mercati europei: “Nel gennaio 2004, con
l’apertura della ‘Delisoft Gmbh’ a Colonia,
riorganizzammo il nostro uffi cio commerciale
con l’obiettivo di sviluppare la commercializ-
zazione del marchio Regina; a marzo nello
stabilimento francese di Delipapier, fu avviata
la seconda macchina da 60.000 tonnellate
annue; nel maggio in Spagna, nasce Ibertissue
in France was a strategic decision. – states
Angelo Del Carlo, director of the Sofi del
group – In this complex, which has around 76
thousand square metres, we introduced the
fi rst overseas continuous operation machine,
giving us a signifi cant boost in terms of
production, increasing from 169 thousand to
219 thousand tonnes per year.” The success
of Delipapier has inspired Sofi del to take on
the challenge of winning over Europe: “In
2003 we completed our Polish investment
in Delitissue, bringing in a machine for the
annual production of 25 thousand tonnes;
in the same year we set up “Intertissue Ltd.”
in Cardiff, where this year we will install a
machine for producing 60 thousand tonnes
per year”. -continued Del Carlo- Until then,
acquisitions in Italy have included: Fibrocellu-
losa Cartiera di Monfalcone and Imbalpaper;
in the same period, Delicarta has gained the
prestigious Ecolabel, the European stamp of
ecological quality. Expansion continues into
European markets: “In January 2004, with
the opening of ‘Delisoft Gmbh’ in Cologne,
we reorganised our retail department with
the objective of strengthening the marketing
of the Regina brand; by March, the second
machine producing 60,000 annual tonnes per
year was installed at the French Delipapier

Il Gruppo è particolarmente attento al rispetto
dell’ambiente e agli aspetti etici delle proprie
attività. Uno degli obiettivi da raggiungere
è quello di certifi care tutti i siti produttivi
secondo standard di gestione ambientale
credibili e riconosciuti.
Report Ambientale.
VOLUMI E PERSONALIZZAZIONE:
LE CARTE VINCENTI PER I MER-
CATI LOCALI.
mossi, forti dell’esperienza positiva fatta in
Francia.
- Ogni nuovo impianto installato viene, infatti,
plant; in May, Ibertissue S.L.U. was
founded in Spain; in June, Delipapier
Gmbh in Germany and in September,
Sofi del Kagit in Turkey.” The Group
pays particular attention to the envi-
ronment and to ethical aspects of its activity.
One of its objectives is to certify all its produc-
tion sites according to reliable and recognised
environmental management standards. One
of the most important Italian companies, it
has recently obtained Emas registration. From
a product standpoint, Sofi del has been added
to the chain of custody of an important world
organisation for the protection of forests.
Furthermore, it is one of the few groups of
the sector to have presented an Environmen-
tal Report.
VOLUME AND PERSONALISATION: THE WINNING CARDS FOR LOCAL MARKETS.
Years of strong commitment and extensive
development, with heavy investments still
continuing today. “This is the direction in
which we are heading, headstrong from our
positive experience in France. This year, our
new investments include the installation of
the fi rst 60,000 ton-production machine at
both ‘Intertissue Ltd’ and ‘Delipapier Gmbh’,
as well as a 30,000-ton machine at ‘Ibertissue
S.L.U.’”. Not only large volumes, however. “In
a global market characterised by competitor
presence, with effi cient continuous-operation
machines working with the same raw materi-
als, the difference comes from converting, in
which investment is focused on technology
and innovation. – explains the director of

passato: “E’ quanto abbiamo fatto in Polo-
nia, - continua Del Carlo - dove inizialmente
abbiamo acquisito un piccolo trasformatore
locale: dovevamo capire le dinamiche di quel
mercato. Ma la bassa qualità dei prodotti
realizzati localmente e l’evoluzione stessa che
il mercato polacco stava iniziando a conosce-
re ci ha portato, in breve tempo, a cambiare
approccio.
facendo in Turchia, in Spagna e in Germania
brand Regina in Europa.
NON SOLO CARTA IGIENICA E
ASCIUGAMANI.
Una tendenza, quella legata al
concetto di benessere, che dal-
la carta igienica si è spostata
anche in altri segmenti: “Il
brand ‘Regina’ – spiega
Del Carlo - ha costruito
il suo successo, oltre che
sulle doti di morbidezza,
assorbenza e resisten-
za, sulla garanzia che
offriamo al consumatore
che i nostri prodotti ‘non
fi niscono mai’. E ciò vale
sia per i Rotoloni Regina
che per i Regina Carta-
the Sofi del group – Every new plant installed
is, in fact, given a personalised objective to
produce tissue with characteristics which
meet the specifi c demands of the local
market. But, in comparison with a specifi c
market, this at times means reverting back
to past methods: “It is through our progress
in Poland, - continues Del Carlo – where we
initially achieved a small local transforma-
tion: we had to understand the dynamics
of that market. But the poor quality of the
local products, and the development that the
Polish market was starting to see encouraged
us, over a short period of time, to change
our approach. With our own ‘Regina’ brand
in tow, we entered into the entire Polish
distribution along with ‘Regina Cartacamo-
milla’, a high quality line of toilet paper. This
has become our method of approach to the
market: we are doing it in Turkey, Spain and
in Germany, with the will to move forward
and to impose the Regina brand in Europe.
NOT JUST TOILET PAPER AND HAND TOWELS.
A trend, connected to wellbeing, which has
shifted from toilet paper also into other seg-
ments: “The ‘Regina’ brand – explains Del
Carlo – has built its success not just on its
softness, absorbency and strength, but on our
guarantee to the consumer that our products
‘go on and on’. And this counts for Regina

clude ingegner Moreno Gemignani direttore
centrale produzione cartotecniche - Nelle
presenti in tutti i nostri stabilimenti. Nel polo
produttivo della ‘Ibertissue S.L.U.’, in Spagna,
a breve installeremo tre nuove linee OMET TV
840 di nuovissima generazione, molto per-
formanti e dotate di applicazioni che insieme
abbiamo studiato. Realizzare prodotti unici,
con caratteristiche esclusive, è spesso l’arma
per vincere la sfi da del mercato”.
Paper and for Regina Asciugoni Kitchen Roll.
Today though, Regina also produces hankies
and napkins: and while we may be in second
place on the Italian market with our range of
personalised napkins, our hankies are receiving
great success from partnerships with Disney
and with the ‘Aromatherapy’ line.
A growing success, nonetheless, resting on the
Sofi del group’s capacity to combine interna-
tional vocation with a fl owing structure, and
with a strong ‘family’ connotation. “The strong
company involvement of both Emi Stefani
and Luigi Lazzareschi – claims the director
of the Sofi del group – is, in fact, the basis of
our group’s ability to maintain an operational
fl exibility which multinationals do not normally
have, whilst from a European point of view
we continue to grow”. But besides this, there
is also a committed investment in collabora-
tive relationships, with both internal human
resources and with suppliers. A relationship
also perceived by OMET: “In this process of
growth, we need to be able to rely on stead-
fast partners, with whom we can build our
plans for development. – concludes engineer
Moreno Gemignani, paper production plant
director – we consider OMET technology as
standard for our napkin machines, and we
have OMET machinery in all our factories. To
the productive arsenal of ‘Ibertissue S.L.U.’ in
Spain, we will soon be adding three new state-
of-the-art OMET TV 840 lines, offering superior
performance and equipped with applications
that we have studied together. To produce
unique products, with exclusive characteristics,
is often the weapon with which to overcome
the challenge of the market.”

ORIGINAL PRINTING PLATE CLEANING SYSTEM, WHICH ELIMINATES
DOWNTIME
Major companies, producing high quality napkins have had the benefi t of the
new cleaning system for some time and following the results achieved, have
given their buy-in. The new printing plate cleaning system can be easily fi tted
to existing OMET machines, which are already available on the market. Its func-
tion is to completely eliminate cleaning machine downtime and to guarantee an
excellent quality of print, which is constant and stable over time. The elevated
increase in performance guaranteed by this system covers the initial investment
in a very short time. Its functionality is particularly original. The cleaning head
moves transversely across the printing unit without touching the printing plate.
In addition, its various functions are all adjustable: speed of movement, number
of cleaning seconds and interval of time between one cleaning intervention
and the next. Such adjustments allow adaptation to the specifi c type of printing
plate, to the type of ink and to the amount of dirt transmitted from the paper
to the printing plate. The solution, released under pressure from the nozzle
hits the printing plate and is immediately suctioned and transported to special
containers, causing no problems to the environment.

UN ARTISTA ALLA RICERCA DEL
BELLO
ceremony and demonstration of packag-
ing techniques and technology, encouraged
strategic activities on the part of packaging
specialists from all over Italy, to participate in
the event.
The continued success of the Grand Prix Cyrel
refl ects the progress made in past years in the
fl exography fi eld, which revolutionized the
printing and packaging sector where fl exo
printing is today presented as a serious alter-
native to rotogravure and offset printing.
AN ARTIST ON A QUEST FOR BEAUTY.
Giorgio Bertato, founder of Novacart Snc in
1984, who today runs the company with his
son, fi nds great satisfaction in this also on
account of the fact that this is the company’s
fi fth consecutive success with an “en-plein”
which is really destined to make history.
After all, Giorgio Bertato does not hesitate to
call himself an “artist” within his sector: on a
constant quest for beauty. “I am a perfection-
ist by nature. The work that I carry out must
be beautiful and unique. It must amaze. A
rose with a drop of morning dew, printed on
a napkin, should be almost touchable, you
should almost be able to smell it. And the
graphics must convey my artistic intuition”.
Having gained over 13 years’ experience
in a top Italian company specialising in
disposable tissue, in 1984
Giorgio Bertato decided
to follow his own entre-
preneurial career. Today,
he is a point of reference
within the international
napkin and placemat
market. “Artistic vocation
has to come from within.
- he explains – it’s like a
tailor preparing a made-to-
measure outfi t or an artist
creating a painting. Then
you need the experience
and technique which can
only be gained in the fi eld.

come dimostrano i premi e i risultati ottenuti
sul mercato: “Con una serie di distributori
qualifi cati arriviamo a vendere i nostri prodotti
Stati Uniti. I primi tovaglioli premiati nel 2001
dalla “Du Pont” sono stati venduti nel Texas;
questi ultimi a Philadelphia.
addirittura superato.”.
20 technicians, I do constant research and
never tire of studying and learning.
Above all, I try to listen to the customer in
order to help him and offer him the perfect
solution”.
A recipe for success, as is evidenced by the
awards and market results.
“Through a series of qualifi ed distributors
we are able to sell our products on markets
worldwide: from Russia to the United
States.
The fi rst napkins to receive a “Du Pont” award
in 2001, were sold in Texas: and the more
recent in Philadelphia.
Until today, satisfaction has never been
lacking”.
It therefore pays to produce quality products.
Even for the more commercial products: “I
think of napkins with characters such as Bar-
bie or Winx, whose licences we have.
Quality and detail are our prime priority for
these products also”.
And for the future? Novacart has no doubts:
“The quest for beauty will be ongoing. - con-
cludes Giorgio Bertato – my son has inherited
my very same passion”.
And today he has indeed surpassed me.”

ANTEPRIMA MONDIALE A GRAFITALIA
WORLD PREMIERE AT GRAFITALIA
VTI Idealquarz, thanks to the long and well-established partnership with OMET, will exhibit for the fi rst time at the
coming Grafi talia (Milan, May 9-13, 2006) its new inerted UV refl ector, installed on a VARYFLEX printing unit.
Curing is a reaction which, under the UV radiation, changes a liquid fi lm laid on a substrate into a solid, crosslinked polymer material.
Oxygen, which reacts with the ink molecules, inhibits the reaction, with the well-known consequences: low printing
speed, surfaces not perfectly dried, yellowing and presence of odours. Until now, the answer to those problems could be
found only by increasing the quantity of photoinitiators, or by increasing the power of the UV lamp.
VTI, in close cooperation with AIR LIQUIDE (the European leader in production and management of industrial gases) has
developed a solution which guarantees a reliable and cost effective answer to all curing problems.
The deep knowledge of gas behaviour allowed Air Liquide to develop an innovative system which, by using Nitrogen,
allows for the inertisation of the area underneath the UV lamp. When coupled with the high effi cient range of UV refl ectors
manufactured by VTI, this systems guarantees unique performances: thanks to a reduction of the Oxygen in the area to 30
PPM, with constant gas consumptions as low as 5 litres per colour per square metre printed, the system allows for a dramatic
increase of the printing speed, deceasing at the same time the energy consumptions, and avoiding any odour or yellowing.
VTI’s technical staff is available to verify the specifi c needs of each user, to suggest the most suitable applicative
solution.

It took two years from the start of the Tar-

short and at the same time especially intense
period, considering the dynamism of that
country’s economy.
And therefore it is not without satisfaction
that we see that now OMET Shanghai is a
signifi cant reality and that furthermore it is
growing strongly.
Indeed, not merely the expected results have
been obtained. The most amazing thing
about this market is the innovative drive of its
players.
With the exception of admittedly large rural
areas where life is still backward, China has
millions of middle-class, rich inhabitants
who live in the densely populated coastal
metropoli.
This is a growing market, driving up con-
sumption and requiring high-quality brand
name products. This demand goes hand in
hand with the typically Asiatic sensibility of
this country’s population: a sensibility that
translates into a preciseness and attention
to detail very different from Western tastes.

osservare come OMET Shanghai rappresenti
vivono nelle affollatissime metropoli costiere.
i consumi e che richiede prodotti all’insegna
prodotto.
CONTINUOUS EXPANSIONEven the simplest thing is presented with as
much pomp and ceremony as possible.
So that is the way it is for packaging and the
business associated with it.
This drives repeated demand for new tech-
nology, aimed on the one hand at reducing
costs through complete in-line process-
ing and on the other hand at increas-
ing the “added value” of each product.
Chairman Angelo Bartesaghi affi rms “In the
last two years OMET has installed the entire
range of machinery currently in production in
the richest areas of the country, giving prefer-
ence to machines with higher technology and
a greater range of services.
We have also participated in the main sector
fairs, building and consolidating a strong
image and an ever more incisive presence.
There are many applications but they all
guarantee the quality of the fi nished product.
In this context, our unmistakably Italian style
together with our continuous technological
research puts us second to none.
So, today we are ready for another surge
forward”.
It is against this background that we have set

“This is a development associated with the
growth of OMET’s presence in China,” contin-

are enormous.
The availability of a huge demo centre for
demonstrating new products and training our
customers’ staff, in association with OMET
suppliers and partners, is a need we have to
satisfy”.
OMET China’s sales department is now nearly

the post-sale assistance technicians, both
electricians and mechanics.
And, as our supply of installations increase,
we also require larger premises for spares

TURCHIATURCHIA
In Turchia è considerato a ragione uno dei
protagonisti dello sviluppo dell’industria gra-
sta conoscendo soprattutto in questi ultimi
fustellatura in piano e macchine tipografi -

In Turkey it is rightly considered one of the
protagonists in the development of label
graphic industry. A real reference for compa-
nies in this sector, which is knowing a two-
digit development above all these last years.
After all, Naim Yavuz, since 2002 leading
an own consulting company representing
materials and machines for the print market,
has been counting some among the most
prestigious International brands of the sector,
among which OMET. And It has an experi-
ence of almost twenty years of dedicated
activity: “I have been working on the Turkish
market of self-adhesive label print since 1988.
– he says - In those years the label market on
rolls was small and the production did not
exceed 10 thousand square meters. There
were few label factories, mostly provided with
small machines. Even the employed technol-
ogy was rather obsolete and the automation
of plants limited. The quality of fl exographic
printing machines was low and very few
knew this technology. There were above all

che semirotative che stampavano etichette
incollate, ‘wet to wet’. Le immagini sulle
etichette erano confuse”.
utilizzare etichette autoadesive in bobina. E il
mercato, devo dire, rispose bene, soprattutto
sulla spinta delle scelte delle mutlinazionali
come Procter&Gamble, Unilevere, BP Petrol,
seminari tecnici sui vantaggi dell’etichettatura
autoadesiva”. Da allora il mercato turco delle
etichette autoadesive si è evoluto con grande
rapidità: “Il nostro Paese – continua l’impren-
ditore che rappresenta OMET in Turchia – è
posto in una zona strategica: è una porta
aperta fra Europa e Asia. E a livello culturale è
particolarmente all’avanguardia.
glued ‘wet to wet’ labels. Images on labels
were confused”. In such a context, Naim
Yamuz starts working as a general manager
of the label factory Irfan Etiket, a production
reality In the van. “It Is in this capacity – Naim
Yavuz explains - that I started visiting fi nal
users to convince them to use self-adhesive
labels In rolls. And the market, I have to say,
answered well, above all on the thrust of the
choices by multinational companies such as
Procter&Gamble, Unilevere, BP Petrol, Shell,
Loreal, Wella and Colgate, which turned
themselves to the use of self-adhesive labels
In rolls. My task was then to help fi nal users
to change the labeling system, organizing
technical seminaries on the advantages of
the self-adhesive label”. Since then the Turk-
ish market of self-adhesive labels has been
evolving at a fast speed: “Our Country – the

open door between Europe and Asia. And
on the cultural level It Is particularly In the

che si orientano verso quest’ultima tecnolo-

ha esperienza e conoscenza sui vantaggi che
essa offre. Per questo organizziamo spesso se-
minari sulla tecnologia anilox, sugli inchiostri
fl exo-UV, sulla fustellatura”. Essere al servizio
della crescita del proprio mercato: per Naim
Yavuz molto più che un semplice lavoro. Qua-
Inoltre
sono stato nel Comitato marketing FINAT e
nel Consiglio direttivo dello stesso organismo
fi no al 2002. Ciò mi ha pemesso di conoscere
molto bene quasi tutti i manager tecnici e
commerciali dell’industria delle etichette e del
packaging in Turchia.
mabili. E’ un grande lavoro, condotto sempre
sul campo”. Un lavoro che ha portato ottimi
frutti, anche per OMET: “Conoscevo da molto
tempo OMET, uno dei marchi più importanti
a livello mondiale nel settore. Ma in Turchia
pochi la conoscevano. Oggi tutti conoscono
la qualità e le performance della tecnologia
OMET. Basti dire che, in soli tre anni, abbiamo
venduto 2 Varyfl ex 420, 1 Varyfl ex 670 e 2
fl exy 330.

against the 78 fl exographic machines for
self-adhesive labels - he states – the users
orienting themselves towards this last tech-
nology are more and more. There Is still some
resistance compared to fl exography, above
all by those who do not have experience and
knowledge on the advantages It offers. For
such a reason we often organize seminaries
on the anilox technology, on fl exo-UV Inks, on
die-cutting”. Being at the service of growth
of his own market: for Naim Yavuz much
more than a simple job. Almost a mission:
“I was one of the establishers of the Turkish
Label Converting Association, which I was
also president of. Moreover, I was member of
the marketing Committee FINAT and the of
managing Board of the same Institution until
2002. That enabled me to get acquainted
with all the technical and business manag-
ers of the label and packaging Industry In
Turkey very well. My own experience In the
technology of printing, converting and die-
cutting and In the consumption materials is
recognized by the market to me. And my task
Is exactly the one of supporting the needs
of label manufacturers, while my staff helps
me In managing consumable materials. It’s a
great job, always carried out on the fi eld”.
It Is a job that has given optimal outcomes
even for OMET: “I have known OMET for
a long time. It’s one of the most Important
brands In the sector on the world level. But
few knew It In Turkey. Today everybody
knows the quality and the performances of
OMET technology. It Is enough to say that
we have sold 2 Varyfl ex 420, 1 Varyfl ex 670
and 2 Flexy 330 throughout only three years.
And the market has always appreciated their
quality, reliability, performances and easy
use. Under the profi le of technical assistance,
then, we can count on the Internal experience
of a technical engineer, besides on the always
timely support by OMET technical service”.
