2 . Mergui Archipelago

Location Mergui Archipelago, located on the border of Thailand and Southern most Myanmar, comprises over 800 beautiful islands. Due to its virtual isolation, the island and surround-ing seas are alive with an amazing diversity of flora & fauna and very beautiful underwater scenes and marine life.

Just north of the Surin Islands, an imaginary line di-vides Thai waters from Myanmar's Mergui Archipelago. Also known as the Myeik (Mergui) Archipelago, this immense area covers approximately 36,000 sq km (14,000 sq miles) and included roughly 800 islands. Diving here is still in its infancy, as the entire region has been off-limits to outsiders since the late 1940s. The archipelago was opened for tour-ism in 1997, yet much of the area remains unexplored.

The islands are similar to their Thai counterparts, eg. Phuket, Surin with rugged, high-profile, limestone and granite topography. One obvious difference, aside from the sheer number of islands, is their unspoilt ter-restrial scenery. Among those islands are various mangroves,wild life, caves, lagoons fresh water falls and riv-ers in the forest. Dense bush and rainforest cover most areas above the high-tide line, while vast stretches of mangroves and magnificent mile-long white-sand beaches are interspersed with rocky headlands, tidal creeks and a few freshwater rivers. The only human inhabitants in the area are Mokens or Salone Sea gypsies. They

live on boats during dry season and remain on land during rainy season. They still practice the same fishing and boat building techniques used for generation.

National Geographic's "Burma's Forbidden Islands" (Burma's Gypsies of the Sea) documentary film by Klaus Reisinger and Frederique Lengaingne shows indepth analysis of the Moken (Salone) Sea Gypsies. "Gypsy Secret: Children of sea see clearly underwater John Tra-vis" also observed that researcher Anna Gislon of Lund University in Sweden investigate and proved Moken kids can see the underwater better than the European kids. Another National Geographic magazine artical also mention that Mokens the survived the 2004 tsunami by observing dogs behaviour and following ancestors' belief.

Mergui Archipelago is perfectly designed for Adventure tours and Eco-tourism.

Dive Sites here are considered to be world class. Reefs, drop-offs, sea mounts, caves and tunnels, which sometimes cut right trough and island with exits on both sides. Fish life is abundant. Scuba diving in the Mergui Archipelago usually means frequent encounters with sharks, manta rays, large swarms of eagle rays, and occasionally, whale sharks. The reefs are in excellent condition.

South sea pearls are also the famous product of Mergui Archipelago. In recent years the technology to breed oysters was successfully tested

estimate to produce one hundred thousand quality pearls each years. We can also arrange tours to those area as well.

3 . How To Get There1. From Thailand, You must first get to Ranong - a border town on Pakchan River. You can get there by -

(a) Bangkok-Surat Thani by flight and Surat Thani to Ranong by car (2½ hours)

(b) Bangkok-Phuket by flight and Phuket to Ranong by car (4 hours)

(c) Bangkok-Ranong by Bus. The bus leaves from the bus terminal (Sai-Tai-Mai in Thai) at 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. It takes 13 hours to get to Ranong and costs about 500 Baht per person. Bangkok-Ranong by turbo-prop Air Craft 2 times a week.

(d) There are Internati onal Direct Flights to Phuket from Sydney (Jetstar), Perth (TG), Singapore (Silk Air), Hong Kong (Cathy), Kula Lumpur (Malaysia Airline). There are regular bus and mini-vans to Ranong from Phuket.

In Ranong, at the jetty you can just hop on any long tail boat which will take around 43 minutes to get to Victoria Point. You just tell the boat man that you need immigration stamp and they will point you the right direction. The Burmese Immigraiton at Myoma Jetty (5 minutes walk from long tail jetty).

2. From Yangon (Myanmar), you can fly to Kawthaung (Victoria Point). Air Bagan flies 3 times a week and less punctual Myanmar Airways has daily flights. Please note that the flights can be cancelled due to weather or other unpredicatable circumstances. You can also leave the country from Kawthaung-Ranong Immigration check point.

3. There are express boats running daily from Dawei and Myeik to Kawthaung. It takes about 9 hours from Dawei and 6 hours from Myeik to Kawthaung.

SECURITY & HEALTH ISSUES

We haven't found any problem for the tourists for 11 years. Some adventurers visited the far-flung islands without any problem. That's why the archipelagoes in Kawthaung district are safe for the tourists. Malaria is found in the area but we have carefully surveyed our routes and islands making sure there is enough fresh water and malaria free.

PERmISSIoN

The pre-approved permission is needed for every tourist traveling to Mergui Archipelago and those arriv-ing from Yangon and departing from Kawthaung to Ranong-Thailand. We could take care of all the application for necessary permissions. Normally, it takes about 7-14 working days (depending on the availability of authorized officials) to get the approval and the following information are needed.1) Name & Passport 2) Issue Date & Expire Date 3) Date of Birth & Nationality 4)Arrival Date

1. Nyaung Wee island (Palubada) There are three major islands in Palu Bada. They are as follow: - (A) No. 115 island (the height of the mountain on the island in meter) (B) Po Ni Island (C) Big Nyaung Wee island

A). 115 island 1. It is 39 miles from Kawthaung and a stopover for any yacht which is about 15 metres deep. There are three white-sandbanks in the eastern No. 115 island. It is a very beautiful and has crystal water. 2. There is a foot path on the first sandbank. If you follow it about 20 minutes, you will get to the sandbank in the northen part of the island where you can see some Monitor Lizards and snakes. 3. Normally, the two-seater fibre kayaks are used for round-the-island trip. There is a Swallow Birds’ cave that is 15-feet in height and 8-feet wide, It is twenty minutes by boat and can enter in it. 4. There are a lot of Coral reefs between the sandbank and the anchor. So it is a good place for snorkelling but one must be careful for the sea urchin whose thorns are poisonous but not deadly.

B) Po Ni island It’s a very beautiful place and has three sandbanks in the western island. It’s about 12 metres deep and less Coral Reefs so, it is not very good for snorkelling but good for fishing. There is a small mount with Coral Reefs in the southern island. So some tourists dive there. Some small caves are on the island but no wild animal. In 1998, five sea otters were seen there.

C) Nyaung Wee island (Palubada) A big island and Salon race (Sea Gypsy) live on it. They are no permanent residence, so they usually come back in the rainy season. The rest of the times, they travel by boat. A one mile-long-beach, a creek and many Mangrove trees beside it are in the western Palubada. If you go by small boat along the creek, you will see so many birds, monkeys, swines and snakes there. Especially, a flock of Hom Bills are flying in the evining.

2. Kyun Tan Shae (Lampi) Island

Lampi is the most popular island for the tourists in Kawthaung archipelago. This island is rich of many wild animals, Mangrove rivers, birds, clean water and Coral Reefs. It will take three days in Lampi to see in detail. There are nine different parts in it. They are as follow-

A). South mangrove River1. The stopovers are about five to ten metres deep. Normally, wait there till the tide up. Then continue upstream the river by fiber boat. According to the tourists, the roots of mangrove trees are the shelters for the fishes and prawns to breed and grow up, also protect from the strong wind. So, mangrove trees shouldn’t be deforested.2. If you upstream the mangrove river, you will see thousands of mangrove trees, birds, orchids, pythons sleeping in the tree, playful monkeys in the tree and other wild animals. When I went there with three tourists in 1999, I saw the foot prints of the elephants. The fishermen said, “There are two elephants on Lampi Island, never disturb anyone.” I saw them again in March, 2001 while I was taking a walk on the beach in Lampi.

Wild AnimalsAs the island is big, there are so many wild animals on it such as elephants, Monetor Lizards, Snakes, Mouse, Deers, Monkeys, Swines, Porcupine and Armadilloes.

B). middle mangrove RiverHas two good stopovers. Can see many mangrove trees, birds and wild animals if you follow the first creek. The tourists really enjoy it because of walking on the beach and taking the boats around the island. According to the fishermen, the elephants usually live near the middle river but never disturb anyone. Sometimes the elephants swim and walk on the sandbank.

C). No. 60 IslandA small round shaped and white sand, so the tourists have lunch and take a rest there. After getting up they do snorkeling because the water in the east is full of Coral Reefs. Several fishes and lobster are seen there. It’s a small island, no wild animals but the tourists like it so much because of the Crystal Water.

D). Crocodile RiverThe old fishermen said, “there were a lot of crocodiles there.” It’s about 3-miles long and many mangrove trees beside the river. If you go there by boat when the tide ebb, monkeys searching for the crabs are seen. It is the most interesting island because of sleeping pythons in the tree, swimming fishes, singing birds and blooming orchids.

E). Kubo Island1. It is a residance for Salon, Sea Gypsies because there are plenty of oyslers and Seacucumbers around this island. When I went there with a group of tourists in 2001, I saw a flock of Hon Bills , about one hundred , came to it in the evening .The nests of Hon Bills are there. So it is the only island in Myeik archipelagoes where many Hon Bills can be seen as well as can take the most beautiful pictures there.2. At the there big trees on the north island, about 2000 fly foxes or fruit Bats were resting . I saw many fly foxes searching for the food at about 6:00 pm. It’s a very beautiful island especially a moonlit night, so many tourists enjoy it very much.3. There are some fresh water well in the south island so some Salon stay there.As a shallow island I will show you two stopovers that are 5 to 8 metres deep.

The stopovers are shown on the map and 10to12metres deep. Can go along the mangrove creek and get to a small mountain, 385metre height,also enjoy the beauty of Lampi,Waali,Kanzargyi and Clara.3. When the tide ebb,a troop of monkeys, searching for the crabs and oysters as well as many birds, especially sea eagles can be seen there.4. As a peaceful place,Wild life and Crystal water,it becomes a tourist attraction. G). Wa Ale island.1. The stopover is in the western Wa Ale which is 10 to 15 metres deep.It is blue water and full of Coral Reefs,so it is the best place for snorkelling.2. It is also a good place for Surfing when the tide up,the waves come on the shore.3. As the wild animals live there,the footprints of animals can be seen on the white snad beach.4. The nust intereating thing is that Sea Turtles lay eggs on it.5. Hikking through the foot path can arrest the tourists.

Wild Life:Cats, Monetor Lizards, Snakes, Monkeys, Swines, Mouse Deers and Birds.

Coral Reefs:Snokelling and diving are excellent because of the hard and soft corals.

H). South-Western Area (South Kan Zar Gyi island):1. Clear water and have so many Coral Reefs that Snokelling is very good. A lot of fish live there, sometimes Sharks can be seen.

2. There is a huge tree in the western small white sand bank, a good please to rest in the easy chair under it.

I). North–Easten Area (North Kan Zar Gyi)It is very good for adventure trip. There are some Salons’s residences in the bay, some banana plams and plum trees are behind them which is a safe place to anchor in the open season.

3. Kyun Philar (Great Swinton) Island:

1. It is also a special place for snokelling because of Coral Reefs. A mile-long beach is in the northen, Gt Swinton. So, it is very beautiful. There is a diving site, on a mount, three miles from it. Some companies called it Shark Cave after the cave and sharks under water which is 8 to 10 metres deep.

2. A half-mile-long beach, snokelling place is in the South-western Gt. Swinton. A mount is in the southern Island.

3. About a mile-long beach is in the North-eastern Island , has a lot of coral reefs and 9 to 12 metre deep.

4. Boywe Island, a fresh-water-well, is located in the South of Gt. Swinton where the fishermen fetch water and take a bath.

4. Cavern IslandIt is located on between 10.18.5N and 97.59.00E. Cavern Island is aptly named as on the southern end of the island there are indeed several large caverns or caves on the water line, one of which is large enough to dive a small vessel into. Waterfalls can be found the western part of the beach. There is a way to climb the top of island, so many islands and lovely senses will see from there. The wild animals can't see in it. There is a fresh water stream ashore. This stream is used by the local fisherman and moken to replenish their fresh water supplies.

5. macleod IslandMacleod island is located in the south west of St. Matthew's Island at Latitude 10 11' and Longitude 97 58' and 40 nautical miles from Kawthaung (Victoria Point) and Ranong, and 160 nautical miles from Myeik (Mergui).

The diving sites in Kawthaung District1. According to the foreign divers, the diving sites in Myeik archipelagoes are as beautiful as other famous international diving sites because of the hard corals and Sea Fans. Nowadays, the good reputation of the Mergui Archipelago and diving sites are more and more popular.2 I would like to mention the popular dive sites in Kawthaung and Mergui Archipelaoges. The dive sites on the map are mentioned just about under water.

(k) North Twin (Twin Cheeks ) A plateaux dive site. A lot of fishes, sea fans and sharks are in the northern dive sites where the shallow part is 9 to 12 metres depest and the deep area is 26 to 35 metres when you away from the dive site.

7. Dive site in myeik District(i) Not many dive sites in Myeik Archipelago, only good for the adventure trip. As the green water, the divers are not very interested in that area.(ii) As rich of Marine life, hard corals, Soft corals, sea fans and blue water some dive sites are very popular among the divers. (a) Black Rock The rock wall is in the east and Sea fans and Corals are in the north and east. A lot of Manta Rays were seen there in 1997-98. Nowadays, so many different sharks and few Manta Rays are still there.

BooKING How to book : You can book by phone, fax or e-mail. Please send us the name, passport number, date of

issue, date of expire, date of birth, nationality and travelling date to us one month prior to departure.

Payment : A deposit of 30% of the total cost per person is required within one week to secure the trip. The balance need to be paid at least 30 days prior to the departure date. If full payment has not been receive, TMC Limited (the management company of Mergui Princess) reserve the right to cancel the booking. Bookings made within 30 days of the departure date must be paid in full at the time of the booking. All the prices are based on the cost and exchange rates at the time of printing and we reserve the right to adjust the tour prices.

Travel InsuranceWe recommend to advise your clients to buy medical evacuation insurance which provides for helicopter rescue on their own before starting the trip. The insurance should also cover accidents, health and loss or damage to the personal effects. What to bring : Please advice your clients to bring a swimming suit, short and ligh T-shirts, Towel, Sun Cream, Camera, Sun glasses & hat, sport shoes and an own snorkeling set if your client has a short or long sightedness.
