PRESIDENT UPDATES

INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC)

The Interfraternity Council(IFC) has had a great start to the year with high recruitment numbers and by holding Walk-A-Mile with the Student Activities Council. At Walk-A-Mile, we had many students show up to walk around campus to show support for Sexual Assault Prevention. The event started with an empowering speaker, then participants got the opportunity to walk around campus in an approximate mile loop in high heels. At the end of the walk, attendees got to enjoy some grilled food provided by the Wichita Wagonmasters and reflect on their experience at Walk-A-Mile. It was a very successful event and set the bar

high for the rest of the IFC events for the year!IFC Recruitment for the summer and fall seasons has gone very well. We have seen numbers slightly above average from several of our IFC chapters. Although some chapters have wrapped up their current season, many chapters will still be heavily recruiting til late this semester. One of our chapters even reached 100 members, the first to do so in WSU Greek Life history, with a couple right on their heels. Overall, WSU IFC Greeks have made many good steps this year and we hope to keep building on this good momentum.

PANHELLENIC COUNCIL (PC)

The end of September means that the Panhellenic Council(PC) has completed yet another successful Formal Recruitment! We are so excited to welcome home 170 women to the Greek community! I want to personally thank all of the Recruitment Counselors and the Panhellenic Executive Board for all of the hard work they have done these past few months to prepare for this special event, with the direction of our Director of Recruitment Counselor, Haley Valcoure, and Vice President of Recruitment, Kylie Wuestewald. Formal Recruitment is just a great reminder of how amazing our Panhellenic community is and what is in store with our new Panhellenic sisters.

Aside from Formal Recruitment, our PC

officers have been hard at work finalizing details for our upcoming programs. PC’s first ever scholarship will be given out this year to two new members, an incoming freshman and a transfer from another institution. We are selling Puravida bracelets as part of this fundraiser for $5. If you are interested in buying a bracelet or supporting our scholarship, please let any officer on PC know. We hope to reach our goal of selling 200 bracelets and giving out the two $250 scholarships!

To follow us on our journey, be sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram (@wsuPC) and Facebook (Wichita State Panhellenic Council). For questions or concerns, email us at [email protected]!

MULTICULTURAL GREEK COUNCIL (MGC)The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) has just started individual organization recruitment. The fraternities and sororities within MGC are having their recruitment weeks for anybody interested in joining a multicultural Greek organization. These recruitment weeks consist of informational workshops and community service opportunities that potential interests are able to participate in. Another great way for people to get involved with our council is Hump Day at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12. This event allows students to engage with MGC members and learn what we are about while also playing games, trivia, eating good

food and so much more. This semester’s Hump Day will be located on the east courtyard of the Rhatigan Student Center. As the semester moves ahead, I am very hopeful for the continued growth of the Multicultural Greek Council, due to two possible organizations returning to campus those being Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Gamma Rho. Finally, I look forward to our continued partnership with the Positive Pathways Program (P3) of Wichita and the preparation of next semester’s Step Show at Koch Arena. Exciting times are coming for MGC!

FSL DESK

Now that recruitment programming is over for our councils and many of our chapters on campus, Fraternity and Sorority Life is gearing up for many of our traditional programs that we host for our Greek students each year. We hosted our New Member Greek Academy for the 350 new members from both spring 2016 and this fall at the end of September. During the program new members met the council presidents and members from other chapters; learned about our community, policies and expectations through fun trivia games and relays; and heard from fellow Greeks that spoke about time management and finances. As we roll into October we look forward to hosting our annual Greek Retreat at Camp Hiawatha from October 14-16, where Greeks will build strong ties with members from other chapters, learn how to be an adaptive leader and participate in numerous teambuilding activities. We are also very excited for Shocktoberfest Week this year as many chapters look to compete in the week’s festivities. October is traditionally a very busy month for Greeks here on campus with all of the programs and events that are occurring, so it is also important to remember to keep up on academics and find a balance between events and studying that works best for each student.

Additionally, we are already preparing for the Annual Greek Awards that will take place at 6 p.m. on Monday

February 27, at the Metroplex. Applications for our individual and chapter awards were released on October 1, for chapter leadership and individuals to begin working on their applications and requesting recommendation letters. We have two new additions this year to the Greek Awards. Order of Omega has added an Outstanding Junior Award that will be given out to one fraternity member and one sorority member along with a $250 scholarship for each recipient. Finally, we have combined the Rhatigan Standards of Excellence with the Outstanding Fraternity/Sorority Award to make the Rhatigan Legacy Award. Chapters will be assessed through three different sections including a section on statistics, a qualitative section with essay questions and a final presentation. We encourage each chapter to apply for all the awards, whether chapter or individual. Fraternity and Sorority Life will host workshops in November to go over what judges look for in application packets, interviews and presentations. All awards are due to [email protected] by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 16. We look forward to celebrating the many accomplishments from spring 2016 and the things chapters will accomplish this semester.

We hope that chapter members enjoy all of the great traditions held in October!

WALK-A-MILE

The annual Walk-A-Mile event was held on Wednesday, August 31. Hosted by IFC and SAC and included college students from all walks of life. Samantha Reyes, a spokeswoman for the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center (WASAC), read a chillingly powerful excerpt from the letter of the Stanford rapist survivor as part of her impactful speech. The walk was led by tottering police officers, Hess Albert (WSU PD), Chad Agnew (WSU PD) and Nate Schwiethale (WPD). Many college students followed in their wake, walking the entire mile as it rained; stopping in introspection at way points with sexual assault statistics posted. “We have survivors in our community, but people think, ‘we’re Wichita, we’re a small place in the world, it doesn’t happen here,’ but it does. It happens everywhere,” said Luke Mohr, an organizer for the event. Every step down the road to preventing sexual violence is a necessary one, and Walk-A-Mile is a step WSU students take every fall.

NEW MEMBER GREEK ACADEMY

Fraternity and Sorority Life hosted over 250 students in the new member community for New Member Greek Academy at the end of September. The program was facilitated by both professional staff and members of New Member Greek Council. New members got to meet members from other chapters by participating in different types of ice breakers and teambuilding activities throughout the day, along with competing as teams in Fraternity and Sorority Life Jeopardy. Additionally, new members were able to ask council presidents questions during their panel and learn about finances from Meritrust and time management from Order of Omega. Finally the new members concluded the event over at Omega Court for an all new member cookout and t-shirt tie-dye. Fraternity and Sorority Life and New Member Greek Council enjoyed meeting and welcoming the new members to our community and look forward to the impact that they will have during their tenure here at Wichita State University.

CHAPTER UPDATES

Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc.Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. just finished up a great BETA week that was filled with different events and some community service opportunities. We volunteered at the Kansas Food Bank, and also held a Salsa Dance Class. Another exciting thing we did this past month was help host Hispanic Heritage Day with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. We were honored to bring the Folkloricio Dancers from Horace Mann K-8 dual Language Magnet to our campus!

Sigma Phi EpsilonAs September comes to a close the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon are in full gear and taking advantage of all the opportunities campus has to offer. September is one full of philanthropy, and while SigEp doesn’t host ours this month, we always make it a priority to support other campus chapters’ events in any way we can. After all, we here at SigEp believe that we truly are a Greek community and believe that in order to receive hospitality you must offer hospitality.

Some events to look forward to at SigEp moving forward is on October 22, campus is putting on their annual “Pumpkin Run.” SigEp has recently partnered with Campus Recreation for the event to help with set up and operations and in turn we receive a donation to our Zach’s Wishes for Miracles Foundation. “It’s always an event I look forward to every year. To be able to spend time with brothers and help out such a great campus event”, said Wes Haines, a member who participated in the run last year.

FarmHouse

October is a very busy month for the men of FarmHouse Fraternity. We are having our capture the flag philanthropy event to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Sunday, October 23. Plan to grab your friends and sign up.

We also had our national philanthropy event, the Gamma Phive K, at the end of the month. Though October will be slow in comparison to the first few months of school, we’re looking forward to it!

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.Wow, what a great year to be a shocker! On behalf of the Zeta Beta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., we would like to welcome you back to classes and give you a brief run down of what’s been going on within our chapter. This past summer we had the great opportunity of hosting our regional conference here in Wichita at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the downtown area. It was truly an empowering experience for our sorority and chapter. Within our chapter, we started the year off with a bang! We participated in the yard show with many of the other great fraternities and sororities, which was a great time to mix and mingle within the Greek student body. We are currently wrapping up our Delta week that was full of great activities. If you are interested in what we have going on the rest of the semester be sure to look out for our event flyers or contact our chapter president MaKayla Harding at [email protected].
