Gwangju Folly, an urban regeneration
project withworld-class architects
A folly is a building constructed primarily for decoration, which excludes its original function. A decorative structure in the garden of a European mansion with no function is an example. However, Gwangju Folly is contributing to urban regeneration via its decorative and functional role in public spaces. Started as part of the Gwangju Biennale and Design Biennale, Gwangju Folly I, II, and III are now making the old town area culturally powerful. Reservations are available for Folly tours.

This place praises and honors the learning and virtue of Gi Daeseung (pen name Gobong), and Chunchuhyang Ritual is held every year. It was torn down when a decree went out by Daewongun to destroy all Confucian schools. In 1938, Bingwoldang was restored first, and by 1981, shrines, Oesammun, Jangpangak, and Naesammun were also restored. It is noteworthy that they have been built one by one over the decades. It is a place with a variety of modern architecture and giant trees over 100 years old. It's like a museum that combines history, architecture, and cultural arts. There are the remains of Christianity and Korean traditional culture created at the time along the alley. Yangnim-dong History & Culture Village is also called the archetype of Gwangju, with Lee Jang-woo house and Choi Seung-Hyo house. It is a pilgrimage site dedicated to the missionaries' devotion, and their traces and Western-style buildings can be seen at the places such as House of Missionary Wilson, Owen Memorial Hall, and Missionary Cemetery. Penguin Village
Penguin Village is a junk art village that itself became an art exhibit by recreating waste into works of art. It was named after the way the elderly with knee pain walked somewhat like penguins. If you enter the narrow alleyway along with the milestone beside the Yangnim-dong Administrative Welfare Center, you can see the old town transformed into a unique exhibition hall.
