  • About OLLI at UNLV

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (OLLI at UNLV) is a membership directed, vibrant learning community of over 1,000 semi-retired or retired adults. Our members want to continue a lifetime of learning with programs rich in content, shared interests, and life experiences. OLLI at UNLV offers special events, interest groups and other activities in addition to our regularly scheduled study group courses. These programs are purely for enjoyment. There are no tests, grades, or need for prior college experience, only the chance to join your peers in the joy of learning and its many benefits. Our coordinators (study group leaders) are qualified members of OLLI and others who enjoy sharing their knowledge. We are proud of our volunteer speakers, many of whom are experts, well-known in their fields. As we kick off the Spring 2012 semester, we are pleased to offer more than 50 interesting and stimulating study groups on a wide range of subjects. Less formal Brown Bag Lunch sessions, between the morning and afternoon study groups, will also return. Take up to ten courses this semester for one low cost of $75.00. If you prefer, you may purchase an ANNUAL membership, which registers you for 3 consecutive terms (including the Summer term) for a discounted price of $150.00.

A Letter from your PresidentWelcome to our Spring semester of OLLI at UNLV. Those of you who are returning will find many new and interesting study groups; new members are in for a very special experience as they view what OLLI has to offer for the first time. OLLI at UNLV continues to grow, due primarily to the fact that it is such a meaningful part of members lives. Now we hope to reach out to the entire southern Nevada community through increased publicity and incentive programs. One such program is described in detail by Mike Cutler, our new publicity chair, elsewhere in this OLLI catalog.OLLI at UNLV will offer more locations for the Spring semester, which will hopefully result in even more student participation. I encourage more coordinators to consider leading future study groups at our various campuses. As we reach an ever larger portion of the over fifty, retired or semi- retired population which is the OLLI

demographic, a continuing need for new volunteers and coordinators exists. In order to explain the potential for greater participation in OLLI, your board appointed committees have developed handbooks designed to assist members who wish to volunteer. One such handbook is entitled OLLI at UNLV Handbook which describes in detail the various volunteer opportunities. Those members who wish to consider leading a study group in the future will find the NEW OLLI at UNLV Coordinator Handbook of great value. All the board and committee members are volunteers. We are a peer led group whose pay is derived exclusively from the pleasure of being an integral part of OLLI. Anyone who wishes to enjoy greater participation may contact any board member. To anyone reading this catalog that is not currently a member I say DO YOURSELF A REAL FAVOR AND JOIN OLLI. I wish you all a wonderful New Year. Ed Devore, OLLI Board President

Made Possible by The Bernard Osher FoundationAt the forefront of a national initiative, UNLVs Division of Educational Outreach joins universities across the United States to provide learning opportunities that serve the intellectual and cultural needs of retirees. This was made possible by a one million dollar endowment, and three grants from the Bernard Osher Foundation.

  • 2OVERVIEW OF OLLI STUDY GROUPS, SPECIAL EVENTS, BROWN BAG LUNCHES, AND INTEREST GROUPS

OLLI study groups are led by coordinators who have passion, interest, and experience with their chosen topics. Study groups encourage active dialogue and member participation.

OLLI Special Events are one-time activities of interest to OLLI members. This spring, we will tour Zappos, the Nevada State Museum, the Techatticup mine and go to a show at the Smith Center. Other events may be organized as the semester progresses. Special fees may apply.

Brown Bag Lunch Presentations provide members the opportunity to gather together between classes to learn more about various topics. Some topics include: local cultural offerings, health and safety information, and various volunteer opportunities. Come and enjoy your lunch while you meet new people, and learn more about what is going on within the Las Vegas community.

Interest Groups are opportunities for like-minded OLLI members to pursue common interests. We now have the OLLI Bikers led by Tim OBryan, OLLI photographers led by John Macdonald, the OLLI Musical Ensemble led by Hector Rosario, and the OLLI Walkers/Hikers led by Ted Ehrlich. We hope that you will join any and all interest groups that pique your curiosity.
