Rollin Baker, one of the curators from the Prairie Edge Museum, talked to the children about prehistoric life. He brought some bones of various early creatures that were actually unearthed in the Eagle Lake area. Along with these he brought two pet- rified turtle shells and I brought"Blos- som" my live turtle that lives in my backyard. The children really enjoyed all of this, however, "Blossom" doesn't want to do this again any u'me soon. Connie Webb read about dino- saurs and then the children went on their own dinosaur dig. The second week Nancy Morris- sey the assistant manager of the Attwater Prairie Chicken Refuge talked to the children about the prairie chicken and the importance of trying to save endangered species. She broughtamountedprairiechickenhen for display and one young child asked in an accusing tone of voice what she had done to the chicken because it wasn't moving. Ms. Morrissey touched on taxidermy for the young- sters. Rebecca Lopez read "chicken" By Patty Holloway stories and then did a short play with the children using darling hand pup- pets she had made. There was a good response to the coloring contest we had for the open- ing of the reading program. It was difficult to choose a winner. We have some good little artists in Eagle Lake, however the following names arc the ones that were finally chosen: Taylor Webb, prc-k and younger, first place; Joseph Rutlcdgc and Trent Glueck, tied for first, in the first through third grade division; Falin Bradcn, fourth through sixth, first; and runners up were Christopher Sommcrlatte and Shaina Bowen. Good job every body! The only sour note on the summer reading program - some one stole the jar of donation money right off the counter while we were busy. This was money to be used for the children and it was stolen from them. Let me correct a mistake I made two weeks ago. I had written that June 6 was V-Day when really it was D- Day. My excuse that I will try to use is that I was just a little girl at the time. Will that do? As I said earlier this is and was a very important time in American his- tory that must not be forgotten. Incidents that took place that day and the days afterwards should be re- membered as we approach our July 4th celebrations and enjoy our free- dom. The inside of the large intestine, which is composed of layers of mucosal tissues, degenerates over time. This tissue degeneration can lead to numerous problems including ulceration, abscesses, and necrosis (rotting). When severe, ulcerative colitis may involve fever, violent diarrhea, and/or profound toxemia. The cause of this chronic condition is not known. Currently available treatment options may relieve discomfort but will not cure the disease. Careful attention to diet can reduce trauma to the colon. For diarrhea loperamide (Immodium) ordiphenoxylate (Lomotil) may be used with caution because these medicines may precipitate toxic dilation of the colon. Mesalamine (Asacol or Pentasa) can be used to establish remission and control of symptoms. Olsalazine (Dipcntum), a new for- mulation of mesalamine, is effective in mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. Interestingly, nicotine patches - but not the gum or cigarettes - have been shown to be useful in controlling disease symptoms in some persons. -\5 r m^» old Time 4 th of July Celebration!
