15.14 Salient Observations:
15.14.1 Engine Performance:
i) The backup torque is 9.01%.
ii) The maximum power was observed as 8.9 kW
iii)
The specific fuel consumption corresponding to max power was
recorded as 366 g/kWh against the declared value of 296g/kWh. Not
only this, even in previous sample it was observed as 261 g/kWh.
This increase in SFC is necessarily required to be arrested to
restore/improve the result compared with previous sample.
iv)
The specific fuel consumption corresponding to rated power was
recorded as 356 g/kWh against the declared value of 296g/kWh. Not
only this, even in previous sample it was observed as 270 g/kWh.
This increase in SFC is necessarily required to be arrested to
restore/improve the result compared with previous sample.
15.14.2 Rotary shaft performance:
i) The maximum rotary shaft power was measured as 7.5 kW.
ii) The specific fuel consumption corresponding to max power was
recorded as 434 g/kWh against the declared value of 310 g/kWh. This
should be looked into. Not only this, even in previous sample it was
observed as 310 g/kWh. This increase in SFC is necessarily required
to be arrested to restore/improve the result compared with previous
sample.

15.14.3 Drawbar performance test:
i)
The power tiller developed 3.8 kW Power during drawbar
performance test in H1 gear corresponding to 15% wheel slip.
15.14.4 Mechanical Vibration:
The amplitude of mechanical vibration on maximum controls /
measuring points of the power tiller exceeded the limit of 100 micron.
The mechanical vibration is directly concerned with
Human/Operator’s Health, Safety and Comfort; apart from the useful
life of the machine’s components. In view of the above, this deserves to be given top priority for corrective action.
15.14.5 Noise measurement:
Max. Noise at operator’s ear level and by stander’s position was observed as 98 dB (A) and 88 dB (A).The noise observed at
operator’s ear level is more than the limit specified by IS:12239
(Part3) – 1988. The Sound Pressure Level is directly influencing the
Human/Operator’s Health, Safety and Comfort; and therefore warrants the r corrective action.
15.14.6 Haulage test
15.14.6.1 The power tiller was recommended for haulage test with a trailer of
gross mass of 1.5 tonne .
15.14.6.2 The trailer supplied by the firm, does not meet the requirement of IS:
10806 : 2003 and therefore corrective action may be undertaken for
compliance.
15.14.6.3 Distance traveled per litre was observed 10.34 to 1.45 km.
15.14.6.4 Specific fuel consumption was observed 63.80 to 64.47 cc/km/ton
15.14.7 Rotavator blades:
The dimensions of the blades do not conform, in full, to IS: 6690-
1981. The blade, being the key component of the tilling operation, is
required to be BIS compliant. Necessary action may be taken for this.
15.14.8.1
As per IS: 12239 (Part 3) – 1988, balancing mass to be added to
achieve correct weight balance of the power tiller with various
attachments should be recommended by the manufacturer in the
operator manual. This may be examined for compliance.
15.14.8.2
Provision of spark arresting device may be considered for
incorporation in the exhaust system.

15.14.8.3 Applicant has not provided any hitch with the machine it is therefore
recommended that a suitable hitch as IS:10747-1983 may be
provided. On this observation, applicant has submitted that the
bracket supplied for trailer is suitable for attaching the implements
also. Not with standing, the said hitch does not conform to the
requirements of IS: 10743-1983.
15.14.8.4
Labeling plate:- Even though a labeling plate is riveted on Engine,
but it does not reveal all the required information. It is therefore
recommended that a suitable labeling plate covering all essential
components, inter alia, the following may be provided in a temper
proof plate:-

II. Max. Power (kW)
III. Specific Fuel consumption (g/kWh)
15.14.8.5
It is recommended that the tyre should have the “Marking” as per
clause 8 of IS: 13154-1991.
15.14.8.6
The handle grip does not meet the requirement of IS: 11858 – 1986.
This may be looked into for compliance.
15.15 Adequacy of literature supplied with the machine:
The following literature was supplied with the test sample for
reference during the test.
Service Log Book, Operator's Manual and Part’s list of Power Tiller.
Operator Manual and Part’s list of Engine. However, it is recommended that the Operator Manual may be
brought out in accordance with IS: 8132-1999 with inclusion of, inter
alia, the following: -
- Recommended matching implements.
- Fuel saving tips.
- Safe operating speed with trailer.
