President’s Letter

Happy Birthday to the Tampa Bay History Center!

What used to be a quiet park and lightly trafficked Riverwalk are now bustling with activity. When we opened our doors in 2009, our guests arrived by tour bus or car. Today, guests arrive on bicycles, by water taxi, on foot, and aboard the street car.

As I write this column, a new hotel, USF’s medical school and two 26-story residential towers are quickly taking shape within a stone’s throw of my office. The neighborhood is expanding, Tampa is changing, and the History Center is growing, too.

This spring, our Board will adopt a new strategic plan, our “road map” for the next five years. With input from our many stakeholders, we’ve identified numerous exciting objectives that, when completed, will continue to carry the Center on its path to becoming one of the finest regional history museums in the United States.

The plan focuses on continuing to serve our existing visitors, who have come to expect high-quality exhibits, programs and publications, as well as innovative storytelling techniques, while exploring ways to reach new audiences through community initiatives that will extend the History Center experience beyond our physical location.

The next decade will be an exciting one. I’m delighted that our many members, supporters and guests will be part of our journey.

While it’s difficult for most of us to believe, January marked 10 years since we opened our new facility. It seems like just yesterday when we cut the ribbon and opened our doors to the public.

2018 was another record-breaking

attendance year at the History Center. With the opening of the Touchton Map Library and Treasure Seekers exhibit, more visitors than ever are coming to the Center to explore our region and state’s rich history. Our membership has reached an all-time high, and attendance at our programs, like Florida Conversations and our in-town walking tours, continues to grow, too. Hundreds of guests, from school children to senior learners, participated in lectures, workshops, seminars and tours. The ever-popular Columbia Cafe also finished a record year.

We look forward to building upon the Center’s successes in the year ahead. As we begin the second decade in our “new” home, we’re watching exciting changes take place all around us.

Membership Update

New for 2019, Valet Parking andUpdated Reciprocals.

the Pirate Water Taxi from Davis Islands, Harbour Island or Tampa Heights, or use ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft.

Valet service is being offered by The Car Park, a nationwide company who manages the 4,000-space Channelside Parking garage located .2 miles northeast of the History Center.

New ReciprocalsEach year, the History Center’s membership department works to add a new institution to our reciprocity offerings, and we’re excited to announce not one, but two new reciprocals for 2019!

Members will now receive $2 off the daily ticket price for the Pirate Water Taxi, as well as $2 off daily admission to the American Victory Ship.

The Water Taxi and American Victory Ship join an already robust list of reciprocals that includes the Dali Museum (free admission in December), Tampa Museum of Art (free admission in June and July), Tampa Theatre ($3 off film tickets in March) and many more.

For a complete list of the History Center’s membership reciprocals, visit tampabayhistorycenter.org/membership, or call the membership department at 813.675.8988.

The History Center is excited to announce a partnership with parking management company The Car Park to offer valet parking for visitors to the History Center.

Valet parking services are now available for all History Center and

Columbia Cafe guests daily, from 9:45 a.m. until 5:15 p.m., for $10 per car, with a $2 discount for History Center members.

Valet services will be in place for a limited trial run as the History Center determines the viability of the program. If successful, it will be implemented permanently.

We want to provide museum guests with as many transit and parking options as possible when they visit, and valet is now one of several ways guests can access the History Center.

Visitors and members can also park on their own at one of several lots and garages that surround the History Center, take the streetcar, which is now fare-free, use

Heather CulliganThe History Center’s New Registrar

“When I learned that TBHC was looking for a new registrar, I was immediately interested because it reminded me so much of the career I had in Atlanta. Plus, when visiting TBHC as a guest, I was very impressed and wanted to be part of this organization.”

Heather’s journey toward a museum career began at the University of Georgia, where she received an undergraduate degree in history before continuing on to the University of West Georgia, where she earned a master’s in history, a certificate in museum studies and an additional certificate in public history.

Heather says her biggest challenge as the new registrar is to figure out exactly how things were done prior to her arrival. “I find that understanding that process, and putting my own stamp on it, is the best way to care for the collection. At the moment, I’m also playing catch up, getting things organized so I’m able to process items as they come in, instead of putting them on a shelf. But I will say in terms of organization, this is one of the best collections I’ve worked with.”

One of the biggest projects she’s undertaken since joining the curatorial team at the History Center is working on the Touchton Map Collection. “I haven’t worked with maps to this extent before,” she admits. “We’re talking hundreds, thousands of maps, and that’s really a great experience.”

After working for two-and-a-half years at Heritage Village in Largo — first as curator of collections, then a year later as director — Heather Culligan crossed the bay to join the History

Center in May as its new registrar.

Three years earlier, Heather and her husband, Tommy, (plus her dog and two cats) relocated from Atlanta, where she had spent most of her life, to Tampa for her husband’s job. They bought a 1928 bungalow in Seminole Heights, a neighborhood they love.

“Heritage Village is a wonderful living-history museum,” says Culligan, “but I wanted to return to what I consider a traditional history museum, similar to the Atlanta History Center (AHC), where I had worked as their collections manager.”

During her tenure at the AHC, Heather oversaw the museum’s collection, archives and library, co-authored a book on collections management, and taught a collections management course at the University of West Georgia.

public outreach programs,” he says. “Two new exhibits we’re considering include a history of the Cuban diaspora and the Gulf of Mexico through maps.”

Along with his other responsibilities at TBHC, Brad will continue to teach Florida history at UT, where he’s also hoping to develop a lecture series. “We’re looking forward to binding our two institutions more closely together,” he adds.

Brad will share some of Rodney Kite-Powell’s responsibilities now that the latter has stepped into his role as director of the Touchton Map Library. Brad will help Rodney with his press responsibilities and take on a lot of writing projects. “I’m currently finishing up an article entitled ‘Tampa’s Multi-purposed Waterway: An Environmental History of the Hillsborough River, 1950 to 1980,’” he points out, “which I think the public will be interested in. And my long-range project is to continue work on a book I’ve started on Florida history.”

Brad admits he has loved history from the moment his middle school history teacher imbedded in him a deep interest in the past. That led him to an undergraduate degree in humanities from Florida Atlantic University, a master’s degree in history from George Mason University and, later, a Ph.D. in Florida history from the University of Florida. “But the real reason I’m drawn to history,” Brad admits, “is that I’m interested in what motivates people to do what they do. I think, in order to best understand that, we have to look at the historical record … because we are all products of historical forces.”

Brad, who grew up in Orlando, is married, has two sons ages 9 and 12, and lives in Carrollwood.

TBHC’s newest staff member, Brad Massey, Ph.D., who joined the organization Dec. 3, reveals that one of the reasons he was attracted to his new job is that he enjoys connecting with and reaching out

to the community. “As Saunders Foundation Curator of Public History,” he explains, “one of my chief responsibilities will be to expand the mission of the History Center outside the confines of our building to interact more with the public.”

Brad defines public history as a narrative that is written and presented for the broader community. He notes that his new position will allow him to reach out to inform and educate people about the historical fabric of our state, making them active participants in the remembrance of a collective shared experience.

As part of his multifaceted job, Brad will give public talks at outside venues as well as at the History Center. He is also currently working on a book project tentatively titled “State of Change: A Social and Technological History of Florida.” Additionally, Brad’s position includes being liaison to higher educational institutions, a role for which he’s well suited, as he’s been a professor of history at Polk State College in Lakeland since 2006 and an adjunct instructor of history at the University of Tampa since 2014.

“I’ll be traveling to universities in the state to meet with professors to involve them in some of our

for a railroad and St. Petersburg was still more than 30 years away from its founding.

Many of the maps in the exhibition are from now-defunct railroads that, during their heyday, were vital communication and transportation routes connecting otherwise isolated parts of the state. Others come from the leading railroad men of the late 19th century – Henry Plant and Henry Flagler. The Plant System, including the South Florida Railroad that came to Tampa in 1884, was purchased by the Atlantic Coast Line, while Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railway, which stretched down Florida’s Atlantic Coast all the way to Key West, is still an independent company.

The connection of Key West to Florida’s rail network was an incredible engineering feat that was accomplished in January 1912, just one year before Flagler’s death. The Overseas Railway only lasted 23 years and was destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. The importance of the railroad in Florida endured, though, and today the majority of freight is carried by CSX and interstate passenger traffic is carried by Amtrak. Though passenger numbers are not nearly as high as they were in the past – with shorter trips taken over by automobile travel and longer ones subsumed by the airlines – commuter rail and intra-state high-speed rail are seen by many as a way to move people more efficiently.

“On Track: A History of Florida Railroads” is on display in the Saunders Gallery within the History Center’s Touchton Map Library through July 14th.

The history of Florida’s railroads is written with steel rails and wooden timbers across the state’s vast landscape. From the Panhandle to the Florida Keys, there are few places in the state that are not touched by Florida’s rail network. A new exhibit in the Touchton Map Library highlights this history in its latest exhibition featuring historic maps, “On Track: A History of Florida Railroads.”

The exhibit includes more than 30 maps, dating from 1855 to the 1930s, showing the growth of the railroad from a single line connecting Fernandina and Cedar Keys to a thriving, interconnected system servicing the entire state. The railroad played a major role in shaping the state’s economy as well as starting the shift of economic and political power from the older cities and towns of north Florida down to Tampa, Orlando, Miami and other cities in central and south Florida.

The oldest map, an 1855 coastal survey of Tampa Bay, has an interesting note in what is now St. Petersburg indicating a favorable location for a railroad terminal and a pier from that point out into the bay. This was printed at the same time that Tampa was advocating

by researchers from the University of South Florida Library’s Digital Heritage & Humanities Collections, found themselves ankle-deep in muck, flashlights bouncing off the cold brick tunnel walks, walking half bent over under the streets of Ybor City.

“It’s the fun part of history and what we do,” said Kite-Powell. “It’s great the History Center can be a community resource in this way, in helping as the city grows and changes.”

As for the tunnel, the reality might not live up to the hype.

“Sewage,” says Kite-Powell. “This was definitely a sewage line. At least, that was its intended purpose.”

On a gray Saturday morning in Ybor City, historian Rodney Kite-Powell found himself army crawling his way along the floor of a dank tunnel below the surface of 6th Avenue.

Years of speculation and rumor lent an eerie heaviness to the below-ground exploration.

Walk into any cigar bar or watering hole in Ybor and you’ll hear all about a network of tunnels, used for everything from smuggling booze during Prohibition to trafficking Chinese immigrants following the 1882 passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Is any of it true? Suddenly, one of Ybor City’s most infamous urban legends was uncovered – literally.

Developers Daryl Shaw and Ariel Quintela discovered the tunnel during the demolition and construction of a new project at the corner of 6th Ave. and 13th St., just off of 7th Avenue, Ybor’s main drag.

Once exposed, questions began bubbling to the surface as local residents, experts and the media weighed in on the tunnel’s origins and purpose.

It was at Quintela’s invitation that Kite-Powell and other History Center representatives, joined

Teens Take TBHC

Did you know that the History Centerhas a Teen Council?

We also hosted two teen-focused events at the History Center: an “ugly sweater” Christmas party and a trivia night/study session for the Advanced Placement (AP) history exam.

Now in its third year, the Teen Council has grown to 18 members representing 10 different schools in Hillsborough County. We have expanded our involvement in History Center programs and scheduled even more teen-centric events. Recently, we joined teen volunteers at the Florida Aquarium for a Riverwalk clean up, are planning more trivia events, and hope to launch an Instagram account to help promote History Center programs to our friends and other teens.

All of our efforts are focused on one goal: serving the History Center, its staff and local teens, all of which go toward making a difference in our museum as well as in our lives.

Editor’s note: Sadie was awarded the Volunteer Leadership Award in December 2018 for her service to the History Center. Over the last two years, the Teen Council – a group of 18 teens representing 10 Hillsborough County schools – has participated in dozens of History Center programs, collectively donating more than 400 service hours since September 2018.

Formed in 2016 by the History Center’s education department, the Teen Council is a coordinated effort to engage students and teens with the museum and help them become more familiar with local history. Led

by teens with guidance from History Center staff, the program is similar to other teen councils at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Chicago Art Institute.

During its inaugural year, the Teen Council met for the first time with two goals in mind: to support existing History Center events, and to create new programs that draw teens into the museum.

We volunteered at a craft table for kids during Smithsonian Day, helped set up interactive games in TECO Hall during Night at the Museum, and shared our own display of collectibles during Collectors Day.

In 2018, he helped launch Mission United, a program of United Way Suncoast that offers employment, housing, health education, financial assistance and legal services to veterans, military members and their families.

“George is more than just compassionate about worthy causes; he is the kind of person who sees a need and then dedicates his own time and personal resources to make positive change,” said History Center President & CEO, C.J. Roberts.

The Lightning Community Hero program was created in 2011 by Jeff Vinik as the signature philanthropic program of the Lightning Foundation. At every home regular season and post-season game, the Foundation recognizes individuals who have made a significant positive impact on the Tampa Bay community through volunteerism, leadership and other selfless acts, as well as presents each winner with a donation of $50,000 to the charity or charities of their choice.

History Center staff members, friends and family were on hand in October to witness George accept this prestigious award. George has served as a member of the History Center’s Board of Trustees for more than 26 years. During his tenure as Chair from 2000 to 2009, he helped guide the transition of the History Center from its “preview” location at the Tampa Convention Center to its current four-story home along Tampa’s Riverwalk.

“George’s leadership was absolutely essential as we planned, secured funding for, and ultimately built the permanent home for the History Center,” said founding trustee and emeritus board member, Tom Touchton.

In addition to his leadership on the History Center’s Board, George has worked for the past 30 years throughout Hillsborough County with low-income families and service men and women, donating hundreds of hours each year in pro bono legal services to individuals, small businesses, churches and other nonprofits.

With a bank of about 20 history talks on which they might draw - from Tampa’s Jewish history to the history of MacDill Air Force Base - the History Krewe is a go-to resource for community groups, and their willingness to travel almost anywhere extends the History Center’s reach to communities across the bay area. Their top three requested presentations? “History of Tampa,” “History of Gasparilla” and “Florida’s First People.” Looking for a presentation for your group? Call Nancy Dalence at 813.675.8983.

In December, the History Center presented a Distinguished Volunteer Service Award not to a person, but to a Krewe.

There are 14 current members of the History Krewe, whose goal is to engage the public, increase awareness and enthusiasm for Florida history, and encourage guests to visit the museum.

In 2018, they traveled to 40 different locations - libraries, retirement homes, churches, corporate events – giving a total of 126 presentations to nearly 3,000 people.

Even the location of USF played a role. “We Latin women owe a lot to where USF was located and when it opened,” she said of the university, which enrolled its first class in 1960. The commuter school made it possible for many young Latin women to attend school while living at home.

Fernandez Fox holds both a master’s and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from USF and, even after years of volunteerism with other organizations, she joined the History Center Board in 2015, where she is active on the Marketing and Visitor Services and Education committees.

“History helps ground and remind people – especially young people – what their parents valued,” she says. “To hear those stories, especially immigrant stories, that’s the best thing we can do. If the History Center doesn’t share them, who will?”

The lifelong educator, activist and Tampa native was recognized for her more than 40 years of teaching and mentorship, her leadership of HCC’s faculty union, and her work with the League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County, where she served as president, helping to organize dozens of debates and town hall meetings.

Maybe it was her Ybor roots – her grandparents worked in the cigar and produce industries – that instilled a strong work ethic and prioritized education – “my parents mandated college,” she says. Or, perhaps it was the
