There is a common trait shared among the homeowners featured in this issue—pas-sion. As we put this magazine together, we were in awe of their dedication—not only to create homes to fit their needs—but to create spaces to feel their souls. Even though it might sound like a cliché, for Ann Adamski, her newly remodeled kitchen is truly the heart of her home. On any given day her house is filled with the sounds of laughter and the wonderful aromas of rich Italian food.

Bruce and Lisa Murphy are passion-ate about the great outdoors, so it’s no wonder they chose to build the ultimate backyard retreat perfect for all ages. And homeowners Cheryl and Jim Bender and John and Lynda Kutey were kind enough to open the doors to their Tampa Bay-area homes, which show off their personalities.

Even the Housetrends editorial staff is getting in on the act and looking back at their favorite contemporary spaces.

As you read about these homeowners it is our hope that it leads you to create a home that speaks to your emotions and personality.

Sincerely,

Bob and Judy DeLuca and the Housetrends staff

On July 6, 2011, Sgt. Nicholson was on combat foot patrol when he was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Afghanistan,

causing him to lose both legs and his left arm and suffer a brain injury.

Eight months after arriving at the National Naval Medical Center, Sgt. Michael Nicholson came home to Tampa, Florida greeted by thousands of supporters. At his church, he spoke

to the crowd,“I just want to ask for one more thing; please pray for the guys still in Afghanistan right now and for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering in

Bethesda, San Antonio and Balboa. Pray for the ones who didn’t make it back.”

After riding in the motorcade from Tampa Airport to his church, which included over 100 Patriot Guard Riders, he said, “That still blows my mind. I never expected

all those people to show up. I am still awestruck about all of this. They have done so much for me, I wish I could do something for them.”

At a time when he was struggling with his own life-altering injuries, Michael was not asking anything for himself, only thinking of his fellow military who are still in need of

prayers and support, and for all those who never returned... only wondering what he could do for others. It gives the Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Gary Sinise Foundation great joy to provide a home for Michael. We hope it is a place where

he can heal and regain his independence. Michael expressed that he wished that he could “give back” to all those who have supported him along the way.

We are sure he already has.

High-tech house incorporates a beloved theme

Lynda Kutey has been having fun since she

was three years old. Not just playing ball and

skipping rope, but fancy, spectacular twists

and turns on her roller skates. Her talent

was enough to take her twice, as an adult, to

Six months ago, Lynda and her husband, John Kutey, moved from upstate New York to find some sunshine and privacy at the magnificent Stonelake Ranch in Thonotosassa, about twenty minutes east of Tampa. With one-and-a-half acres at a minimum, neigh-bors there can remain friendly but not too close. After researching existing residential properties, the Kuteys decided to build a lovely one-story on their four-acre lot. As first-time builders, they began to face the myriad of choices they would have to make to produce the “smart” house that John wanted and the “fun” home Lynda desired.

A group effortAs a “Beekeeper” for a technology company named Hive, Jeff Harris is an expert on Smart homes, with a broad knowledge on everything from automation, structural wir-ing and renewable energy to security, lighting control and central vacuums. He and John clicked right away. With the Hive approach, all sound abatement, thermostats, pathway lighting, door and garage locks...even speakers in the rocks surrounding the pool are all handled by a smart phone from anywhere in the world. Jeff met with the Kuteys and then submitted a detailed proposal that John and Lynda immediately approved.

As the planning progressed, Lynda requested assistance in interior design, since she had long held a special interest in Mickey Mouse and had a large collection to accommodate into their living spaces. Fortunately, Jeff ’s sister, Amy Butts, is an interior design consultant and, just as her brother had, quickly put together design boards that would give the couple the feel of paradise they wanted and incorporate the couple’s collection as well. Finishing out the creative trio is Sherri Johns, Sales Manager of Annabelle’s Fine Home Furnishings, a well-known family-owned business that specializes in furniture and decorative accessories. Not unlike John

and Jeff, Lynda quickly hit it off with Amy and Sherri. In fact almost 90% of the inte-rior furnishings and fabrics were chosen at Annabelle’s.

Working together, Amy and Sherri selected furniture, fabrics and accessories room by room so that the flow of the resi-dence would be maintained and the over-all design unified. Amy installed custom white poly-satin shutters throughout the house. The living room, which overlooks the pool area and beyond that the lake, has a Stanford couch, Lexington chairs and two Vanguard ottomans, all with custom fabrics. The crystal and chrome accents give a real sparkle to the room and

the two lighted display cases on either side of the fireplace are filled with charming Mickey Mouse artifacts.

To the right of the entry, the chrome and walnut table and chairs are accented by custom floral patterns on the seats and a dramatic custom silk black and pewter runner down the center of the table. This lovely Romo fabric is also repeated in the living room drapes. Overhead is a custom crystal lamp and chandelier, an exclusive design from the Walt Disney collection. The Disney collection also appears in the nearby guest powder bath.

The kitchen features Old Biscayne cabi-netry with a combination of bar stools

and chairs. Since John once was a meat manager who changed careers to informa-tion technology, the GE Profile convection oven with a sensor plug-in to assure per-fect temperatures, has become his favorite appliance. These appliances are coordi-nated by beautiful granite countertops. Three LED pendant lights hang gracefully over the breakfast bar.

Relaxing is easy in the nearby family room, with custom drapes and a rug from the Disney Collection, the comfy sectional and ottoman are very inviting. Small occa-sional tables by Lexington have bases of petrified wood. John’s den features a Fairfield leather executive chair accentu-ated by a desk, entertainment center and built-in custom cabinetry by Amoroso Cabinets.

Living a fantasyOne of Jeff Harris’ biggest challenges was the starlit ceiling for the home theater. In addition to eight cerise leather motorized recliners, the Kuteys’ media room walls are lined to be totally blacked out when watching movies or videos, but decorated with Roman shades with striking red and black cornices for interesting color and design. To top it all off, Jeff cut 2,100 individual holes in the ceiling through which to fish fiber optic lines. When cut with a soldering knife, the fiber end melts and causes the twinkle effect when the switch is turned on.

The master suite offers a feeling of escaping to Nirvana thanks to coordinated shades of browns, beiges and iridescent plum antique bronze window treatments. A cozy seating area and a bathroom boasting marble tile, an oversized tub and a large walk-in shower encourage relaxation.

The most fascinating room has Stanley Youth bunk beds literally filled with Lynda’s collection of stuffed dolls and animals—some of them from childhood, showing a little wear and tear, and many others purchased at Disney World, of course. FOOD LOVERS

REMODELED KITCHEN AN AVID COOK’S DREAM COME TRUE

By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Johan Roetz

Shortly after Ann Adamski moved into her newly

purchased home in Lutz, she received a phone call

from a few friends, notifying her that they were com-

ing over to make gnocchi in her new kitchen. A short

time later, her home was filled with family and friends,

and a cooking feast was under way. “This is what we

do,” Ann says. “At least twice a week we are at each

other’s houses, enjoying a meal together. Whatever

you have in your fridge is fair game.”

Adapting to changeAnn and her three children moved from New York to Tampa Bay two-and-a-half years ago. “My husband passed away suddenly four years ago,” says Ann. “The kids and I started coming down here for holidays and staying with a good friend who has lived here for years. We fell in love with the weather and relaxed lifestyle and decided to take the plunge.”

Ann initially bought a home in Cheval, but shortly after getting settled in, she realized it was a bit too small. With a teenage daughter and one adult son still living at home, she needed more breathing room. Plus, she has a large extended family that visits often. “When you’re from the north and you move to sunny Florida, you start getting those phone calls in November, asking when they can come for a visit,” she says.

remodeled a kitchen and didn’t have any idea what I wanted or needed.”

Ann’s kitchen in her New York home was typical of the area with dark stained cabinetry and countertops. For her Florida home, she wanted the design to be bright and cheerful.

The original kitchen was completely gutted, even a pantry was removed to allow for more cabinet and counter space. The old cabinets were replaced with white painted maple cabinetry brushed with an espresso glaze for a weathered look. To offset the perimeter cabinets, Jeff McNabb suggested using cherry wood for the island. “The island features a Mission stain and Charcoal glaze, a very custom look,” McNabb says. “Customizing cabi-netry continues to be a big trend. The contrasting colors in this kitchen make it really stand out.”

The range hood serves as the focal point in the kitchen, and was custom-made to blend in with the perimeter cabinetry. A mantle shelf, crown molding, elegant carvings and a beadboard panel give the hood an artistic look.

Since cooking is such an important part of Ann’s life, she made sure to select materials known for their durability and low maintenance capabilities. From the Cambria quartz countertops to the sturdy hardwood flooring, she doesn’t have to worry about whether or not her kitchen can handle a large group of people or elaborate meals. “I hosted Christmas Eve at my house this past year,” she says. “In addition to 50 people, we had trays of fish, shells, baked clams and shrimp. It was a traditional Italian dinner and it was amazing.”

Personal detailsIn addition to state-of-the-art appliances and an abundance of storage options, Knabb also made sure to incorporate Ann’s personality into the kitchen design. Glass-front cabinets strategically placed throughout the kitchen hold 1950s glass bottles and other retro kitchen pieces. Her cookbooks reside in a pair of open shelves on the island and a view of the outdoor

To accommodate the needs of her fam-ily, Ann purchased a 4,600-square-foot home nearby. “It was perfect for us; even though it needed a new kitchen, I wanted to take on the challenge,” she says.

The now 18-year-old home had a typical 90s kitchen, with white cabinets and coun-tertops and a ceramic tile floor. “It just wasn’t me,” she says. “With the amount of food we cook, I wanted a kitchen that could accommodate those needs.”

Finding her styleSince she was new to the area, Ann turned to her friends for referrals. She ended up selecting brothers Keith and Jeff McNabb, owners of Tampa-based Kitchen Creations. “We just bonded and they were so patient with me because I have never

lanai and surrounding property allows Ann to enjoy the great outdoors from the com-forts of her kitchen.

All of these elements have created the ultimate family-friendly kitchen. And for Ann, family is never very far away. Shortly after she moved down to Florida, her parents and sister followed. “We all live within a few streets of each other. We joke that we have a little commune. But we love it. We’re very lucky to have each other.”

Team loyalties lead to the ultimate backyard retreatBy Amy Diehl | Photos by Johan Roetz

With

two young children and 13 years of residence in this home, Bruce Murphy and his

wife Lisa had decided it was time to upgrade the back yard. Five years ago, they began

renovating the inside of the home room by room, and now it was time to move out-

doors. Situated in Safety Harbor between Tampa Bay on one side and Alligator Lake

on the other, they wanted to make an outdoor living space that provided a fun place

for the kids to play as well as a relaxation and party area for the adults. And, as a house

divided between loyalties to Michigan (him) and University of Florida (her), this was a

project that allowed them to have some fun with this theme.

Incorporating favorite pastimesSo how did a simple sport court request evolve into a full backyard makeover? “A cus-tomer of mine who was a friend of theirs referred me to them,” Mike Johnson of Sport Court says. “They called me and said they wanted a sport court after seeing one at their friend’s house.”

As they chatted, Bruce revealed he was a serious golfer, so they discussed adding a putting green. That’s when Lisa said she had always wanted to add six to eight feet to the living room. Bruce then chimed in that he always wished for an outdoor kitchen. In the end, Bruce and Lisa retained Johnson for the sport court and games area and, after interviewing four general contractors, they chose Brian Ross of Lindross Remodeling to be their contractor. A relationship that worked out well all around, as Lindross ultimately oversaw not only the outdoor kitchen, but also the renovation of the pool area.

Walking out the rear of the home shows three distinct areas of this project. The most colorful, eye-catching part is the large, 70-foot long sport court that fronts the water in the left corner of the property. Basketball hoops flank either side of the court which features a big yellow Michigan logo on a field of blue on one side and the bright orange and blue colors of the Gators on the other half. The court features containment fencing, a 10x10-foot rebounder net, two basketball hoops and two double watt lighting systems to light up the courts for nighttime competition. Also in this area is a putting green and a Cornhole green complete with custom-painted Cornhole boards featuring, you guessed it, Michigan and Gator logos.

ABOVE: The sport court features the homeowners’ favorite teams: Michigan and University of Florida. RIGHT: The homeowners often gather around the

firepit at dusk and admire the view beyond. OPENING SPREAD: The homeowners

often enjoy dinner under the stars on the renovated patio behind their home.

Just as important, the second major part of this renovation was a huge, elegant outdoor kitchen and seating area. Adding a small area of square footage to the home as initially envisioned proved to be impractical, but adding an outdoor kitchen area meant adding usable space without needing to move walls or other existing sections of the home. NanaWall impact–rated glass doors were installed in the living room which serves to really extend the living room out to the outdoor kitchen area. Travertine steps with fiber optic lighting along the rim lead down into the new living space.

This complete outdoor kitchen and living area includes a large, stainless steel outdoor grill and appliances, and an always ready keg with a Gator tap courtesy of Brian Ross. A stainless steel drinks bar by Fire Magic includes lighting, glass racks, a sink and storage drawers. Set against a cultured stone wall, stainless steel wall torches by Napoleon and two 70-inch Sharp flatscreen televi-sions flank the stainless steel grill for multi-game viewing. White, polished, quartz counters keep the look clean and elegant.

family and friends to relax outdoors. OPPOSITE TOP: A pair of 70-inch televisions flank the grill, allowing guests to sit at the bar and catch a game. OPPOSITE FAR RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM: Burners

were also built into the countertop for added convenience. The outdoor kitchen includes a small sink and stainless steel glass

racks. Drawers allow for convenient storage of grilling utensils. Pop-up plugs magically appear out of the countertop.

For bar seating, comfortable counter stools pull up to the center island which features rich blue granite countertops. A separate wall by the group seating area holds a gas fireplace. Cypress wood ceilings with recessed lighting and ceiling fans accent the overhead structure over this space. The roof of the structure also serves as a spacious sundeck from which to absorb the beautiful views of the lake beyond. The sundeck can be accessed by a staircase or from the second story of the home. A pool bath and shower were added to this space as well. “On Saturdays and Sundays, the doors are open and we live out here!” Bruce exclaims.

Teamwork pays offThe design of the area was a group effort. “Our Lindross team worked together with Bruce and Lisa to come up with a plan. They had no firm idea of what they wanted, so at the beginning we doodled some ideas to play with. They really liked the drawings initially and they added some elements they wanted and it grew from there,” Ross says. “They were really easy people to work with.”

As part of this project, the existing pool was upgraded with travertine mosaic tiles around the waterline and a new pool deck of travertine pavers which tie in with the floors of the outdoor kitch-en. Re-landscaping was also done around the pool and court areas with a waterfront seating area and in the front of the home. With all this work going on, project manager Dan Roth was on site all day, every day keeping an eye on things. “He practically lived there,” Brian laughs.

“This project grew and grew and grew. It just kept morphing,” jokes Bruce. “It started with the sport court which morphed into the kitchen, which morphed into redoing the pool. Then we said we might as well redo the landscaping while we’re at it, which morphed into redoing the driveway with pavers. Then my wife said she always wanted a water feature, so we added that to the driveway as well. After all that, we’re staying here for a while!”

ABOVE: The pool deck was also replaced with travertine pavers to tie in with the floors of the outdoor kitchen.

PWHENP the Benders decided to move from their beach-

front home to the Odessa countryside, they decided to build a real country manor home.

Viewed from the road, this lovely, new 6,000-square-foot home looks like it was trans-

ported straight from a Southern country estate. F The long winding drive and ancient

Live Oaks dripping with moss set the stage. Colorful azaleas and flowering beds of annuals

add bright fields of color to the landscaping while lush rolling lawns and specimen magno-

lia trees evoke its southern heritage. The expansive front porch is supported by pristine

white columns with rich red window shutters, peaked roofs and a copper weathervane

atop the garage cupola.

“We love it because it is very elegant; it makes a statement.”

Modern eleganceStep inside, however, and you have a whole different picture. In accordance with today’s modern lifestyle, this home features an open floor plan on the ground floor. The open two story foyer features rough marble flooring, a grand piano and most dramatically, an elegant floating staircase that gracefully curves up to the second floor. The staircase, handmade by Murray Fox, is the piéce de résistance of the foyer. “We love it because it is very elegant; it makes a state-ment,” Cheryl Bender says. “It took months and months to make, because he makes it all on site.”

The homeowners, Cheryl in particular, worked very closely with builders Harry Gray of Gray Homes, and his son Brad to create exactly the home they desired. “We were hip to hip on the selection of all the finishes,” Brad says. “I took Cheryl around to all the dif-ferent vendors we used. It was my job to help guide her in her choices.”

Cheryl, who did all her own design work agrees. “Brad helped me so much. One day I picked this tile I was look-ing at and asked him what he thought. Brad just looked at it and said, ‘I really wasn’t think-ing of that.’ It was nice to have an honest sounding board!” she laughs.

OPPOSITE: A small sitting room, complete with a piano, sits just inside the front entry. ABOVE: A pool table and bar sits at the top of the stair-case on the second floor. This house is all about the details and finishes. The dra-matic ceilings of the large fam-ily room feature a box beam pattern accented within each box by recessed lighting and 6-inch crown molding. The gracefully arching ceiling in the dining room has a shadow box ledge that hides recessed rope lighting for a gentle illumina-tion that draws the eye. “It’s great mood lighting,” Brad says.

Details, detailsEach room throughout the

home has its own special fea-ture. A bright red Samsung washer and dryer set impart a sense of fun in the large laun-dry room. The deep porcelain laundry sink and the unique red granite countertops are lovely enough to make even doing laundry a pleasant event.

an old-fashioned water pump which pours down into a ves-sel sink, while the pool bath off the kitchen sports a lovely matching Kohler porcelain sink, mirror and commode hand-painted with passion flowers and hummingbirds. “My husband is still talking about this one!” the home-owner jokes.

Cheryl says the spacious master bathroom is one of her favorite rooms in the house, specifically the soaking tub, which sits beside a bank of windows facing the back pool and lake. The blinds, which are used throughout the home, are uniquely designed with two layers of alternat-ing horizontal opaque pan-els—one solid and one mesh, which can allow light when pulled one way or offer com-plete privacy when adjusted slightly. Budget Blinds, the installer, won a national award for this project. “We used the Illusions Transitional Shade,” says Elaine Trotter of Budget Blinds. “They are such a great product. They give you hori-zontal lines without having to have horizontal window coverings and they are dust resistant. They offer you the privacy of a window shade, the softened view of a sheer and the option of raising or lower-ing your shade with privacy control at every level.”

The upstairs of this home features a large family game room and bar area at the top of the stairs and three upstairs bedroom suites, plus a large fourth room which was origi-nally planned as a movie the-ater, but has been converted to

The stone countertop is made of light green and yellow onyx that is lit from below with a sea-green glass vessel sink. The marble tiles in the shower are accented with a green glass panel inset. The whole space evokes the feeling of the seashore. “We call this the Beach Room, for our Northern guests,” Cheryl says. “They never want to leave!”

Energy-efficient elementsThis home is more than just a pretty face though. It features all the latest in energy-efficient technology. All the attic space has been treated with Icynene foam insulation, which keeps the space within five degrees of the rest of the home. All the air condition-ers are 15 SEER rated for maximum efficiency. And all the win-dows are insulated, high efficiency Andersen windows. “A house this size should normally cost in the $600-a-month range to cool.

This home averages $300 per month and that is including all the energy used for the pool,” says Harry Gray.

The Benders are empty nesters now with their children out in the world. “People say to us, ‘Why would you build such a big house for just the two of you?’ but we’re really using it,” Cheryl says. And with a new grandbaby on the way, it is sure to be used even more.
