S NIPPET SA century of banking in rural NSW. Three generations of bankers:

Maximilian Solling (1848-1893),Maximilian Solling (1881-1947) andRex Eric Solling (1909-1980).

PART 3: Rex Eric Solling (1909-1980)

Maximilian Solling’s son Rex Eric Solling, was born at Forbes on 23 August 1909, was educated at Condobolin NorthProvisional School from 1918 to 1920, obtaining the Qualifying Certificate, and completing his fornal schooling at EastMaitland Boys High. At 16 years of age he joined A rmidale branch on 18 February 1926, at an annual salary of 80 pounds, and eligible for a 40 pounds living away allowance. After four months was transferred to W alchabranch from June_1926 toJanuary 1928 where his father was manager. He was transferred to C ondobolin (February 1928) and then spent a year atM olongfrom May 1928. The young clerk actively involved himself in local sports, and hisdeparture attracted a profile in thelocal press. Rex was 'a keen; accurate and obliging official', they wrote, 'and is bound to go far in the service. His manlybearing won friends of the genuine kind. He knows all about athletics, healthy indoor games and was a keen fieldsport. As an amateur boxer he has admirers among those who understand the 'noble art'. (Molong Express 18 May1929 p12) He was posted to M anilla(1929) and Q u irindi(1930).

Rex became part of the relieving staff during the depth of the depression, a migratory sort of life, constantly on themove. Between July 1931 and May 1932 he moved thirteen times to branches in the New England region and on theNorth West slopes. It ended when he received a permanent position at M oree on 7 June 1932 where he stayed foralmost seven years. He played tennis at Moree where he met and became engaged to Jessie Webb in 1937; in 1938 theboarding house he resided in was destroyed by fire, losing his prized stamp collection. Rex and Jessie were married on8 April 1939 at St Phillip's Church, Sydney. The policy of the Commercial Bank was that where a bank employeemarried a local, the couple would be transferred within a short time to another outpost of the Bank's Empire. Theytravelled to 222 Seymour Street Bathurst in May 1939, and during the austere times of the Second World War, theirtwo children, Stephanie (1940) and Max (1942) were born.

He was made accountant of A lbu rybranch on 2 July 1945 where he subsequently bought his first home, 672 OliveStreet, continuing to work a five and one half day week with a two week annual holiday. Proclaimed a city in 1946,Albury offered a lot of facilities for an inland town and his children completed their primary education at AlburyBoys and Girls Public Schools.

After almost ten years Rex and his family was transferred in May 1955 to a small railway town on the north westplains of NSW laid out during the Boer War, with a hotel, general store and Pastures Protection Board, B u rrenJu nction, where trains continued on to Walgett on one line, and Pokataroo on the other; it was his first branch. Thetown was a service centre for a pastoral region of extensive holdings but still not connected to the electricity grid andreliant on tank water. After four and a half years on the black soil plains, the posting to C oolamon in the Riverinacame in August 1959, a wheat growing area of small holdings, a people's co-operative store with its own flour mill, with a war memorial that occupied pride of place in the town centre. The town's great passion, bordering onfanaticism, was Australian Rules, totally absorbing its townsfolk during winter. Our first year there, the mightyGrasshoppers, won the premiership for the first time in 14 years.

All trading and savings banks in NSW closed on Saturday from 20 January 1962.A banker's five and a half dayworking week came to an end. Rex arrived at his final branch, C ondobolin, located on the Lachlan River, on 31January 1963. Earlier he had gone to school there when his father was manager, and he had relieved there. A warm, welcoming town, its friendly people made Condobolin a place with a soul. He retired on 23 August 1972 after 46years’ service on a salary of $6,936 per annum.

After a lifetime in inland NSW Rex and Jes headed for the north coast and settled at 5 West End Avenue Taree wherehe died on 27 August 1980, aged 71 years, leaving a net estate valued at $64, 254. Survived by his wife, Jessie, bornon 24 February 1917 at Dubbo, died at Taree on 18 May 2017, aged 100 years. She left an estate of $1.22 million.

Date unknown.Robert Ness stated: I recall a ruckus when someone wanted to install curtains!Board wouldn’t have a bar of it. Can’t remember who suggested it, Harold Lee maybe, although more probablyBowen.Pity the photo isn’t in colour to analyse the carpet. The timber joinery was all Tasmanian blackwood, very rareeven back then.

I spent a whole day once with the MD Bowen helping him hang pictures in the room!! He was correct about onething though which I never forgot; all paintings in a room should be hung with a common eye line (his of course!)running through the centre of each painting. Despite his dictatorial manner he actually had quite a sensitive side tohim as well.

Speaking of Bowen, brother John recently had a biopsy because his dermatologist thought he might have Bowen’sDisease but luckily the results came back that it was a solar keratosis.

Ralph BOOKERMust apologise for next meeting, health pretty poor at the moment, the old asthma has become severe andam awaiting more treatment.Thank you for the great newsletters and especially Max Solling’s account of his Grandfather’s career. For me thespecial bit was on Murrumburrah as I also worked there and attended St. Paul’s Anglican Church along with BillReeves. We even sang in the Choir. Murrumburrah Branch was an Oriental Bank and had some very interestingdescriptions of customers who worked on the Goldfields rather than a signature, such as a cutlass scar to the cheek. Idon’t know if this was the building that he worked in or whether it was another. Regards to all,

Colin BREWERSome history of my time with the CBC. (Please excuse some incorrect spelling)

I was with the Bank for a little over 12 years having commenced duties at Grafton branch in February 1961 at theage of 15. Quite common at that time.

The Manager was Frederick Charles Stevens (nature’s gentleman) and the Accountant Bill Booth-Jones with theGeneral Hand, Bill Cheadle and Number One teller Oscar Hall. All great and funny guys. There was also a bunchof lovely ladies who were very helpful/understanding with a young, frightened and inexperienced country boy.

The next move was to Casino branch (only about 100 Kilometres from Grafton) where I was thrown into Hand Ledgersfor a couple of years. Great training for becoming a Teller. Cyril Lamborne was the Manager and Ian WattsAccountant. Other staff members included Billy Mann ( a fantastic Guy who tragically passed away later), GeorgeWare and Verla Hayes. I spent 4 years in Casino during which time I took over from Billy. My time at Casino Branchwas mixed with heavy, unrealistic demands from some of the senior staff. During that time Bob Phaup took over asAccountant. Bob was one of the funniest guys I have ever met. He was also extremely helpful and a breath of freshair.

After 4 years in Casino I was transferred to Dorrigo under Bob Dare. At that time I thought Casino Branch had itsmany frustrating moments but this branch placed a different emphasis on the word "challenging".

Around 12 months later I was transferred to Tamworth Branch and Alex Commens was the Manager at that time. Icannot speak to highly of Mr Commens who was a wonderful, professional man with a gentle and firm nature. Afantastic ambassador for the Bank with a keen sense of humour. Rex Dyson was the Accountant and after hismanagerial appointment elsewhere was replaced by John Sharp. John was/is a great guy and very helpful with allthose he came in contact with. He (and Mr Commens) were my role models for many years to come. At the time ofretirement Mr Commens was replaced by Allan Carrboyd who was a very relaxed and likeable Manager.

After an enjoyable 4 years in Tamworth my then wife and 3 months old son were transferred to Hobart. (Some timelater we had our second son).

The first Manager was Marwood Kingsmill whose whole life (at that time) centred around the CBC. You alwaysknew where you stood with Mr Kingsmill and I learnt a lot from that gentleman. Marwood was transferred to Perthand replaced by John Boadle a real gentleman and a fine Bank Officer. The Accountant was Morris Goodman andthe staff were very friendly and supportive. Living in Tasmania was like moving to another country, rather a "shock tothe system".

My final appointment was Singleton, a nice friendly little town. The Manager was Gordon Smithers.

After 12 months in Singleton I resigned taking up a position with the Bank of Qld.

Overall I have had employment with three Banks, one Building Society and a group of Accountants; a total of 47years in the Finance industry. My wife and I have been retired in Coffs Harbour for 10 years and are thoroughlyenjoying the change. Someone has got to live there!!

One final thought. I wonder what would happen in "modern day Australia" if the the Bank staff of say 40 years agodecided to take appropriate action against some "managers of the day for their ongoing blatant acts ofbastardisation." Unfortunately the bulk of these could possibly now be deceased. This is obviously not restricted to CBC.

Jim BROWNEHi, Kerri Scott gave me your email. Back in 1984 I was given the job of closing the office of 319 Queen St.Brisbane. In my possession I have the old Queensland CBC Flag which may be of interest to you plus acouple of other Australian flags. These flags are in good condition. As they are cluttering up my garagewould you be interested in having them in your memorabilia.

John (Mun) MUNRO ToowoombaSorry – can’t make it to the luncheon – distance prevails. Enjoy the Newsletters – keep ‘em coming. The article on the Sollings CBC connection brought back memories of when I was transferred fromSingleton to Pilliga and I asked our Travel Department (remember it) to book me a sleeper from Sydneyto Gwabegar (the end of the line)where a mail car would take me on to Pilliga. But they advised me to gofrom Singleton to Burren Junction and get the mail car from there to Pilliga. When I alighted at B.J. andasked the Station Master where I could get the Mail Car to Pilliga he informed that because of flooding theMail hadn’t gone to Pilliga for weeks and was unlikely to start today. Not knowing what to do next I calledin to our Burren Junction branch where Rex Solling was the Manager and explained my predicament.Fortunately he said he knew of a customer who was going to Wee Waa in a 4WD who could take me there

Bingara Branch which closed last year. The building is now for sale. The Regional Australia Bank nowoccupies what used to be the Bingara Westpac Branch and is only open 3 days a week. The same Bankalso now occupies our old Warialda Branch and is also only open three days a week. A sad reflection ofour times, eh!On a trip from Toowoomba to Maitland last week the effects of this long deep drought was evident. Sawvirtually no greenery until we reached the Hunter Valley.I would hate to be the Manager of a rural branch under today’s conditions.John also included for the website the last memory of High & Church Streets, Maitland branch (aboveright). It opened in 1964 – John Malone was the first Manager.Pass on my best wishes to all at the next meeting Cheers

Colin WAREWhen I joined the Bank on 10 July 1951 I was appointed to Lane Cove Branch as junior. After a few weeksthe manager, Mr Cook, told HO that I was too young and I was then transferred as junior to RoyalExchange branch on £52 pa and it was there that I met Bill Butler. He was one of the tellers. A reallylovely, clean cut gentleman who always had time to chat, even with me as a junior and those impressionshave stayed with me all my life. RX was quite a branch, knitted together by the manager Mr Edmonds. Ithad a large overseas department headed by Jim “King” Binney and supported by John “Baby” Cotton. We had a young ledger keeper who loved giving nicknames and she worked with Miss Bassett and HeatherIcely. Best regards, Colin

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

At our June luncheon we had a medical emergency when Graham Morgan took ill and theambulance was called for assistance. Graham was taken to hospital and diagnosed with verylow blood pressure. After a change of medication Graham is now well.

Whilst waiting for the ambulance Committee members were concerned that they were unable tocontact anyone using Graham’s mobile phone directory to advise of his condition.

Some research has shown a program called “In Case of Emergency (ICE)” that enables firstresponders, such as paramedics, firefighters and police officers, as well as hospital personnel tocontact the next of kin of the owner of a mobile phone to obtain important medical or supportinformation (phone must be unlocked and working). It encourages people to enter emergency

contacts in their mobile phone address book under the name “ICE”. Alternatively, a person canlist multiple emergency contacts as “ICE1”, “ICE2”, etc.If you are not comfortable with this process you can simply add words wife, husband, son, daughter etc after their name in your address book for contact. Ray Knight has also suggestedthat you include your Blood Group in your phone directory.

Bill BUTLER 2 December 1922 - 21 June 2019Denyse Corne: Hello, I am the daughter of former CBC officer William (Bill) Imeson Butler.

I am writing to inform you that Bill passed away last Friday, 21st June. He was 96.5 years old. Bill lived agood life and is deserving of his peace and contentment as the last 12 months have been rather a challengefor him.

Wayne Linnert: It is with deep regret that we advise the passing of Bill who was a Life Member and eldestmember of our Club. Bill commenced with the Bank in 1940 at Newcastle West. As a young 19year old he was told to report to Army Militia for a medical on 31/12/1942. Bill’s Manager atNewcastle West shouted “Preposterous, that’s the Bank’s balance night and no one, no one isexcused”. The medical date was brought forward to early December and Bill was called up withboys from Sydney instead of hometown Newcastle boys. The local boys ended up in Malaya andeventually became prisoners of war. Bill served 4.5 years in the Army with the 36th Infantry andthe 2/3 Machine Gun Battalions which took him to Port Moresby in June 1942. On one particularcampaign he drew the short straw in the jungles of New Guinea and became forward scout.Commander’s instructions were seek, search and destroy. He was part of the landing assault atAitape which was the Battalion’s last campaign of the war with the objective of clearing theJapanese from the Aitape-Wewak region of New Guinea between December 1944 and August1945. He was in the last contingent to return home in 1946.Bill rejoined the Bank at Roseville then followed Leichhardt, Campsie, Royal Exchange andpromotion to Inspector’s Clerk at Head Office. He was then appointed Accountant at Kempsey andhis first Managerial appointment at Merriwa in 1960 then Cessnock in 1965 and opened CivicCentre, Newcastle in 1970. Bill finished his career on Relief Staff and retired on 1/6/1982. Bill’swife, Joy, passed away 18 months ago after celebrating 68 years of wedded bliss and he neverrecovered from his great loss. I have passed on the Club’s sympathy to Bill’s daughter, Denyse, who kindly sent me details of Bill’s life and career.

Ian Holston: A lovely tribute to a great gentleman. I have been fortunate to have spent a number of wonderfulhours with Bill and Joy over the last 12 years or so.I attended Bill’s farewell last Wednesday with Max Vardy, Chester Kenyon (91) was also there. A wonderfulletter was read out from Dr. Brendan Nelson regarding Bill's service to his country. I first met Bill and Joyat a CBC Golden Oldies cricket weekend in Coffs Harbour in 2005. They were great friends of Lola and VicMartin and they really enjoyed catching up after a long absence. Since I returned to the Tweed they hadregularly attended functions at the Twin Towns Club and it became a regular occurrence to have lunch withthem. Bill accompanied me to the CBC luncheon at Port Macquarie a few years ago and was pleasantlysurprised that the Hotel we had booked into was where he spent the first days of his honeymoon some 6oyears before. Since Joy passed away his trips to the Tweed had been less frequent and his health wasdeteriorating, although his faithful little dog "Shadow" kept him company.

Bill's regular poems will be missed, however on the Club's Website there is a wonderful poemwritten about his beloved Joy. HIs regular visits to Sydney to march on Anzac Day were an inspiration toall, farewell Digger, for a life well lived.

This photo of Bill Butler was taken on the 2nd November 2017 at the Australian War Memorial, Bill isthird from the right. It was a special service honouring the 75th Anniversary of the Kokoda War Veterans.

Geoff Chapman: Bill commenced his bank career at 559 Hunter Street Newcastle West Branch. A few daysbefore his retirement, when I was Manager at that Branch, he asked me if he could spend his last day ofBank service at the branch, to which I readily agreed.

Colin Ware: Thanks for your note about the sad passing of my friend Bill Butler. Even though I have not been ableto attend many meetings because of my remote living (and work commitments as I am still commuting toand working in Sydney 4 days a week) I am determined to be at more meetings. When I joined the Bank on10 July 1951 I was appointed to Lane Cove Branch as junior. After a few weeks the manager, Mr Cook, toldHO that I was too young and I was then transferred as junior to Royal Exchange branch on £52 pa and it wasthere that I met Bill. He was one of the tellers. A really lovely, clean cut gentleman who always had time tochat, even with me as a junior and those impressions have stayed with me all my life. RX was quite a branch, knitted together by the manager Mr Edmonds. It had a large overseas department headed by Jim “King”Binney and supported by John “Baby” Cotton. We had a young ledger keeper who loved giving nicknamesand she worked with Miss Bassett and Heather Icely. Whilst our paths never crossed again, I went west (notliterally I hasten to add) and he went north, I know that I have lost a dear friend. Rest In Peace Bill.

Tom CLEMENT 2 December 1928 - 23 June 2019Wayne Linnert: It is with deep regret that we advise the passing of Tom who was a Life Member of our Club.

John COULTON 3 February 1937 - 2 July 2019John Hitchcock: John Coulton was a longtime friend. I worked with him in Sydney Office Managers

Department where we were both managers. We developed a long-lasting family friendship withJohn and his wife Noelene. Since we both retired, we enjoyed playing golf together at Gordon GolfClub. Each Monday at 9.00am we phoned to plan our golf day. This continued until last Mondaywhen he was unable to take my call. He will be sadly missed.

Max Vardy: Many thanks for yet another sad passing. John had previously worked at WoodenbongBranch before I arrived there in 1956 to commence my banking career.

Richard Nott: Regret I cannot attend Johns departure as in Qld all the week. We were both on the BankEducation Service In 1966.lovely gentle man who loved his family, mates and golf.

Peter Williams: I worked with John back in mid 90’s on RAR. A real gentlemanHenry Thorne: Very Sad News - John was a very special guy, a good friend and a bloody good banker.

He will be missed.

Jim HARBORNE 9 October 1925 - 29 March 2019Frank MAUNDRELL: I just received advice of the death of Jim Harborne, which marks the passing of another

CBC stalwart! I never worked with Jim but knew him for many years. He was Accountant at Blacktownwhen I was 2IC at Seven Hills. I think Lidcombe was his first Managerial appointment. It was during thattime, about the mid-1960's to the 1970's, that I served with him on the CBC Branch Committee of the oldUnited Bank Officers Association of NSW (The Union!). That organisation underwent many metamorphosesbefore finally becoming part of what is now the Finance Sector Union. I know Jim's recent life has not beenparticularly happy, being confined to a Nursing Home and losing his beloved Marge some time ago. I knewa fine chap, a good friend and, I think, a good Manager from what is now, the "old days of CBC" It is sad tolearn of his passing.

Warren Ebbeck: Jim Harborne: Banker, publican, land owner, farmer, cattle breeder, poultry breeder (and bantamlover), entertaining whip cracker and witty raconteur. I recall a quip by Jim after he was cartwheeled overthe handle-bars of his motor bike into a boundary fence of his property near Goulburn and became entangledin the fence wires :- "The bloody fence was electrified," said Jim. In 1958 Jim accompanied John Jacobs,Fin Lewis and myself to New Zealand where we helped to establish a sound CBC/NBNZ relationship duringour tour. Jim was a mate for over 60 years, godfather of our eldest daughter and a loyal CBC "character".R.I.P. Jim.

Rowan Raymond Jones In 1961, when Bruce Bartlett went on holidays from Barraba NSW Branch, Jim relievedhim, and I became acquainted with his friendly personality. So did the local nursing sister Marge Campbellwho oversaw the maternity ward. Marge went on to deliver my first-born, a son and Jim went on to marryMarge. I like to think they are now back together again.

Graham HARDWICK 8 March 1946 - 18 May 2019Wayne Linnert: I regret to advise you that Graham passed away at Westmead Hospital after a long term battle with

cancer. He joined the bank on 5/2/1964 at Cootamundra and worked at Yass, Tumut, Coolamon, Castlereagh& Hunter Sts, Sydney, High & Church Sts, Maitland and Gosford. Graham held managerial positions atGreen Point, Wyong, Martin Place, Law Courts and Gosford, then Card Services where he finished his careeron 15/10/1999. He then was a Property Inspection Officer from 2001 to 2012. Graham was an avid NorthSydney Bears supporter and had a penchant for horse racing culminating in part ownership of severalthoroughbreds.

Sam Clough OAM: Graham Hardwick was a wonderful friend way back to 1967. Our bowling trips were alwaysenjoyable and not without success; Graham was a great team man. His racing discussions (waxing lyrical)and keenness with his horses saw him without pier - he was entitled to get a good one. Zedfast won a few andcertainly paid it's way. I remember the wonderful times and the great fight he fought. Proud to be a friend.

Ed McLennan: Sorry to hear about Graham, who was a top officer. He was Manager Administration andAccounting to my knowledge around 1999.

Max Vardy: Graham Hardwick was on Gosford Branch staff whilst I was Manager at East Gosford. A thoroughgentleman & a very loyal Banker.

Dennis REDMANIan Holston: I first met Dennis when the Bank was setting up the Bankcard system in 1973 and he was

appointed Queensland Manager. He spent a lot of time training in Sydney and we got to know himwell, Friday beers were a most popular occurrence at the Crows Nest Hotel. Over recent years wehad lost touch, however I met up with his brother - in law Doug Walters at a cricket function on theTweed a few years ago and I asked Doug how he was getting on. Within a couple of minutes Doughanded over his mobile and said Dennis is on the line. We had a long conversation and I gatheredthat he was not travelling too well with a lot of health problems. Dennis had been instrumental inintroducing me to Doug for a function we held in the Bank's Head office in his benefit year. Part ofthis day included having a lunch with senior executives of the Bank with other special guestsNorman May and Alan McGilvray. Many years later he helped me with some promotions that I didwith the Kenthurst Cricket Club's Centenary celebrations. Dennis was a very dedicated officer, played hard and had a very successful career in both Bank's.
