The Master said “all who take the sword shall perish by the sword” (Mt 26:52). It is the policy of St. Austin Catholic Parish, therefore, to not allow open carry of weapons of any kind on par-ish or school grounds, with the exception of those carried by on-

duty law enforcement officers. Thank you for your understanding.

For the safety of our youngest parishioners, please accompany your children at all times while on campus, including trips to the restroom during mass and to and from the nursery, faith for-mation classes and other parish events.

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intention That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths.

The Easter Season is moving right along. First Communion is this weekend. In several Dioceses on the East Coast the Feast of the Ascension will be celebrated this Thursday, but here in Texas, as in most of the country, Jesus will ascend on Sun-day.

This parish is strong in inter-personal relation-ships. A few weeks ago, we had a wonderful Volunteer Apprecia-tion Sunday. At each Mass the priest read a long list of various groups and activities that go on here. Many parishioners stood to indicate their participation in one or more of the activities. None of these ministries is done alone. They all involve active partici-pation with others, whether that is lecturing, taking Holy Com-munion to patients in a hospital or nursing home, working on the Finance Council, the Prayer Blanket Ministry, or Small Christian Communities. And in addition to the wonderful service these ministries provide, the participants also get to know many other parishioners. There is a bonus to all these volunteer groups be-cause they not only provide a needed service, but they do so much to strengthen the bonds of friendship and personal knowledge that make this a parish community.

This is so very important. Over and over again studies show how social capital, the informal bonds and connections that make soci-ety work, are declining in this country. People do not have as many friends, do not belong to as many clubs and organizations, and do not know as many people as they used to. Some people blame our reliance on electronic devices, and there is much to be said for this. I have several times seen three or four college age people seated together at a table and instead of interacting with each other, they are all focused on their own phone or electronic device. This has gotten to be such a common sight that we no longer comment on it.

But this phenomenon of growing social isolation was well under-way even before the common usage of cell phones. Our society puts a very strong emphasis on independence and individuality. These are good things, but easily get carried away and empha-sized out of proportion. Texans are justly proud of the “Lone Star” state, but too much emphasis on the lone star can end up as a lonely star. Since the days of Alexis de Tocqueville, perceptive commentators of American society have identified the danger of so much emphasis on independence and individuality that it leads to social isolation.

This was very much a part of the analysis of the founder of the Paulists, Fr Isaac Hecker. He saw the need for some countervail-ing force to balance an extreme individualism. For him, that counter force was the Catholic Faith, with our strong emphasis on the communal, the Communion of Saints. We are very much con-nected, by the Holy Spirit, a connection that not only is real but perdures for all eternity. Hecker liked to say that he could be all the better American by being Catholic, and all the better Catholic by being an American. Of course, I agree with him.

So while the many interpersonal bonds that form the St. Austin Parish and School community are certainly a blessing and strength for our community, they also are a blessing to all those individuals involved in these activities, and even a blessing to the wider Austin community by building up the social capital of our community.

God bless!

Items Needed for Thursday Outreach

Summer is almost here, and that means our re-quests for hygiene kits are about to skyrocket! We give out hygiene kits each week to our homeless brothers and sisters as well as those who are return-ing to society from the criminal justice system. We are in desperate need of toothpaste (travel-sized or larger) and shampoo (travel-sized, unused).

Please bring donations to the church office. Thank you!

May Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary

May is the month of Our Lady. She is our spiritual mother! Dedi-cate time to pray the Rosary in honor of and in thanksgiving for the Blessed Mother, for your mother or someone who has been a mother to you. Come join us in a rosary recitation after the 8:45 a.m. Masses on Sun., May 6, 13, and 20 in the Mary Chapel. All are welcome to pray one decade or the entire Rosary. Free Rosar-ies (for adults & children) with Rosary prayer guides (English & Spanish) and prayer petition cards will be available.

Gabriel Project Baby Shower

Each May, the Gabriel Project hosts a Baby Shower to collect the most needed items Ga-briel Project Angels need to answer the call from mothers and families requesting help in a difficult time.

The Gabriel Project Baby Shower donation box is located at the St. Joseph altar. During this month of devotions to the Blessed Virgin Mary, please consider making a gift to our Baby Shower. We graciously ask for donations of:

· Diapers (sizes 3, 4 & 5)

· Summer Baby Clothes (boy sizes newborn & 6 mos.; girl sizes 6, 9 &24 mos.)

· Gift cards or monetary donations to buy baby gear for the Earn While You Learn Educational Program. Please place gift cards and monetary donations in an envelope marked for the Gabriel Project and drop in the offertory basket or take to the parish office.

Thank you for your support of St. Austin’s Gabriel Project minis-try! If you’d like more information about Gabriel Project, please contact Carmen Adams at [email protected].

Ushers/Greeters Needed at All Masses

Consider giving your time and talent as an Usher/Greeter. These are the parishioners who greet people at the doors of the church with a smile, help them find their way if they’re newcomers, hand them a worship aide, invite people to present the gifts, and assist in passing the collection baskets.

We need people who can consistently serve at least once a month, who will undertake the necessary training, and who are willing and able to handle money. Most importantly, we need people who are willing to smile, look people in the eye, and say, “We’re glad you’re here!”

Please contact Kristen Dempsey Pasyk at [email protected] to learn more.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Catholic Charities Counseling Services aims to com-bat the barriers of cost, distance, language and stigma by provid-ing high-quality, sliding fee scale services by professional coun-selors. For more information or to schedule an appointment con-tact 512-651-6150 (Austin), 979-822-9340 (Bryan) or 254-383-

Mental Illness Awareness Month

St. Dymphna, Patroness of Mental Illness

Dymphna was born in Ireland in the seventh century to a pagan father and a Christian mother. When she was fourteen, she conse-crated herself to Christ and took a vow of chastity. Soon after-ward, her mother died and her father’s mental stability began to rapidly decline. So grieved was Dymphna's father, Damon, that the King's counselors suggested he remarry. Though he was still mourning his wife, he agreed to remarry only a woman as beauti-ful as she had been. Damon sent messengers throughout the sur-rounding lands to find women of noble birth who resembled his wife and would be willing to marry him; when none could be found, his evil advisors whispered sinful suggestions to marry his own daughter. So twisted were Damon's thoughts that he saw only his wife when he looked upon Dymphna, and so he consent-ed to the arrangement.

When she heard of her father's misguided plot, Dymphna fled her castle with a priest, two trusted servants, and the king's fool. The group sailed toward what is now Belgium, and hid in the town of Geel. When Damon discovered their escape, he traveled to Geel and captured them. He ordered the priest's head to be separated from his body and attempted to convince Dymphna to return to Ireland and marry him.

Dymphna held true to her vow to Christ. When she refused him, Da-mon became enraged and killed his own fifteen year old daughter.

Her devotion lives on as an inspira-tion to all who are struggling with abuse and mental illness.

Save the Date! St. Austin will host a Ramadan Iftar Dinner for the Turkish Dia-logue Institute on June 8. Sign up to meet and share a meal with our Muslim neighbors. Contact Pat Macy at [email protected] for more information.
