THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority political and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed marriage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal professions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse.

In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, al-though Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s when the Republic was formed, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.

CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today’s readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us—both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigo-rates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm re-sponse echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God.” That same confidence appears in Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “The Lord is faithful,” he testifies; “he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.” In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God’s pro-tection will endure. The children of God whom God guards, Jesus says, will live forever like angels.

FAITH FORMATION 32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 5

Join Srs. Josephine and Rose Paul this week as they present on the

EASTERN RITE CATHOLIC CHURCHES.

Pope St. John Paul II knew what he was about when he said that the Church must

“breathe with both lungs”, those “lungs” being the twenty-two Eastern rites on the one hand and the Roman rites on the other. The Eastern rites are in full communion with Rome, but our li-turgical and theo-logical identity differs from the widely-familiar Latin expression. Come join the Sisters, who have personal experience with some of these rites (India has at least three different rites!)—this Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6-7:30pm in the Par-ish Hall.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS

(RCIA) There will be no class this Sunday, Nov. 10. Plan to attend Fr. Jose’s talk on St. Thomas the Apostle and India on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 6:40 in SMA. Parishioners are also welcome to attend!

Children ages 3–7 are invited to join us for Children’s Liturgy of the Word every Sun-

day at 10am!

Religious formation grades K–7 finished their beau-tiful Respect Life projects for the month of Octo-ber. Thank you parents and catechists for helping the students with their projects! Given that Novem-ber is the month to remember our beloved dead, we will be working on getting to know the saints of the 20th and 21st centuries. There will be no 8th grade confirmation prep on Sunday, Nov. 10; instead, it will be rescheduled for Sunday, Nov. 24.

Unfortunately, Salt & Light couldn’t beat SMCC Young Adults at kickball, but rest assured...there will be a rematch! Join Salt & Light every Sunday evening in Novem-ber from 6-8pm in the Parish Hall for faith, fellow-ship, games, and more! “Don’t be afraid to dream great things”. —Pope Francis Adults 18-35 are invited to our November Social this Monday, Nov. 11, at 6pm, at Gregor Mac-Gregor’s Mini Links & Drinks on 27 N. 3rd Street. Even if you aren’t great at putt putt, bring your best Catholic trivia knowledge and you can still be a winner! If you haven’t already, download the GroupMe app and subscribe to “Saint Michael Young Adult Min-istry” for what’s going on!
