Help for a Young Mother 12 Wish List At Steppingstone, homeless and at-risk youth are learn- ing important life lessons in the aftermath of the Febru- ary fire that destroyed several apartments. They are taking safety more seriously, having experienced first- hand how safety planning and training can save lives in dangerous situations. But more than that, Steppingstone youth are learning they can overcome traumatic life events and change their situation. They are realizing that just as Steppingstone repairs the damaged apartments so too can they heal and be made whole and find hope for their future. ECH CLIENT BECOMES FOS-TER CARE ADVOCATETeAsia and her “Mom by Choice” (her foster mother) boarded aplane to Chicago. It was the f irst t ime that TeAsia had been on aplane and she wanted to make sure she was comfortable withflying before taking off on the biggest adventure of her l i fe.

TeAsia, a junior in college, was selected as one of twenty youngpeople from across the country who have experienced l i fe inFoster Care to join FosterClub. FosterClub, a part of the NationalNetwork for Youth in Foster Care, selects young people who havespent t ime in Foster Care and are between the ages of 18 to 24to serve a summer internship with the program.

The young people must show leadership potential and the abil ityto connect with their peers. Having been selected, TeAsia will f lyto Seaside, Oregon, where she wi l l receive training in publ icspeaking, presentation, advocacy, and professional development. She wil l then travel around the nation, meeting with others tospeak about her experiences and help advocate for those in Fos-ter Care. She also plans to teach young people in Foster Care toadvocate for themselves.

“ I am ver y exc i ted ,” saysTeAs ia , a fo rmer c l i en t inthe ECH Fos te r Care Man-agement Program, “ I wantkids in Foster Care to knowthat they can speak up,and they can keep f ight ingfo r the r igh t f i t f o r them.The importance of having ap lace where you ca l l homecan make a d i f fe rence inthe ch i ld ’s l i fe.”

And that is just what TeAsia did forherself . After being kicked out ofher home, TeAsia l ived in her car, cont inuing to go to school , getgood grades, and keep up with herthree after school jobs. All that tookits tol l on her though, and her “Mom by Choice,” who was herformer teacher, noticed. TeAsia f inal ly had enough of trying tohandle al l that was happening by herself and expressed thosefeel ings to her teacher. TeAsia let i t a l l out and her teacherquickly helped her get into Foster Care.

Her f i rs t p lacement was not a goodfit . She was in a home with severalother k ids and poor condi t ions. In-s tead o f res ign ing herse l f to thes i tuat ion, she spoke up. “ I to ld mycase worker th is was not work ingand showed her a round .” TeAs iaexp la ined . “ I deser ved a goodhome and a good p lace. No ch i lddeserves to l ive in th is way.” Af terthree fos ter home changes that i swhen she moved in wi th her “Momby Choice,” her former teacher.

“ I j us t want ever yone toknow that there is a good f i tfo r you in Fos te r Care. Youjus t have to f ind your vo ice, speak up, and f ight for whatyou know is r ight .”

TeAs ia , a we l l -spoken conf identyoung lady, w i l l con t inue to be as t rong advocate fo r young peop le

in Fos ter Care. Cur rent ly, she i s apubl ic re lat ions major wi th the em-phas is in leadersh ip and hopes toone day open a Center fo r G i r l s ,that wi l l he lp g i r ls f ind the i r vo iceand speak out about the things thatare happening to them.

Julia was 18 and pregnant when her father told her shecould only live at home until she gave birth, after thatshe’d have to find somewhere else to live. After contactingSteppingstone, Julia was placed on our waiting list, butshe was determined to be accepted into the program. Wereceived frequent calls from Julia, asking if we knewwhen she would be able to come. As her due date ap-proached, we still didn’t have an opening, and Julia didn’tknow what she would to do when the baby arrived.

Steppingstone just happened to have an unexpectedopening and contacted Julia to see if she would want tocome sooner than anticipated. “YES!” was her eager reply. So Julia moved to Steppingstone, and just eight days latergave birth to a baby boy. Ever since, she has been veryreceptive to the assistance she has received from staff asshe learns to be a mom.
