From the Principal:
Last week we had a fantastic turn out for our first 2019 Prep Transition day for our
new students and their families. Thanks to all who helped to arrange the day, it
was a great opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with their
classroom and for parents to meet each other. While the children were engaged
in some activities in the classroom, Anita Elliott and I met with parents and
answered a few questions on topics such as uniform and communication etc. We
also used this time to gather some feedback about our newly developed Transition
Program. Parents let us know that they appreciated Jane’s visits to the kinders, the
social story books supplied to the children about LWPS and that the children could
recognise key people at the school on transition day through their reading of the
book. We are looking forward to the rest of our transition days and connecting
further with the children and their families.
If you are aware of anyone who is considering an enrolment at our school for 2019,
please direct them to our office for a tour or the relevant paperwork. Enrolment
forms are also available on our website.
This week, I had the pleasure of spending the morning with our grade 6 classes.
The work they were focussed on was an instructional writing piece based on their
developed knowledge of solar power. I was impressed to hear their prior
knowledge but also how they were able to integrate this with new knowledge and
then use a thinking process to express this knowledge in a different context. It was
great to see our thinking curriculum at work in these young people.
Over the last few newsletters, I have been able to present student and parent data
that show an improvement in almost every area of our school. Last week we
received our staff data which was a result of extensive surveying by the
Department of Education and Training. The results were very impressive and
indicate a high level of professionalism in our staff across the board. In all four of
the major areas of the survey, we were not only above results for “Similar Schools”,
we were above the average state result! We are so proud of our results and believe
that our improvements are due to the dedication and hard work of many facets
of our school community. Thank you to all who are contributing to make LWPS the
great school that it is. Below are shots of some of the data sets on School
Leadership, Professional Learning and Teaching and Learning.
Hope you all have a great week.
Kindest regards,
Lisa
From the Assistant Principal:
Inquiry Learning at LWPS
As guided by the Victorian Curriculum standards, at LWPS we provide students with
learning experiences that facilitate the development of skills and strategies. We
aim to enable our students to think critically and creatively, with the ability to
respond effectively to challenges they face both now and into the future. This
capability to be adaptable, innovative and think critically enables our students to
apply themselves to both familiar and unfamiliar concepts with a growth mindset,
high levels of motivation and confidence.
Our whole school approach to Inquiry units of work delivers learning experiences
that, while providing guidance and direction in learning, offers students agency in
their own learning. Class teachers follow an explicit LWPS process in planning for
the teaching of Inquiry units of work. This involves a flexible three stage approach
to guaranteeing we are engaging students; working forward from their prior
knowledge and providing inspiration for learning, creating student questions and
investigations and thirdly, providing an avenue for the application and
showcasing of learning. Throughout the process, teachers ensure they are guiding
student learning in alliance with the Victorian curriculum standards.
We have a developmental sequence of concepts that are built upon through a
students’ 7 years of school works on a two year cycle. The concepts that Inquiry
units are developed around include; change, decision making, courage, identity,
creativity, power, identity, environment and, needs and wants.

Foundation & Year 1:
Year 1 students have been focusing on poetry. This particular activity was a
rhyming words task, where students, after reading Dr. Seuss - Green Eggs & Ham,
had to make their own green egg rhyming words. Once completed, students
played a game of memory to match their words. In numeracy students have been
focusing on division. Students were to share m&m’s between their group. Trick was
they needed to choose how many m&m’s they were sharing and they had to
select their own groups.
Year 2:
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about
fractions. We have had lots of fun dividing
up fairy bread and playdough as well as
making paper pizzas to share out.
Inquiry and Writing
For Inquiry and Writing we have continued
with experiments and writing procedures.
We have made slime out of cornflour and
water and observed how the properties of
the slime are different depending on how
quickly you move through it. We also tried
mixing oil, water and detergent. The oil and
water did not mix, the water and detergent
did mix and the detergent helped to break
down the oil in the water.
Reading
This term in Reading we have been reading dreamtime stories. We have been
making summaries, and looking for text to text and text to self-connections.
PBS
For PBS last week we played cooperative games with the foundation students.
Students played a water relay game, a life raft game where you had 2 hoops per
group being the life rafts and you had to get from one end to the other without
anyone falling/stepping out of the raft and a jumping game where they had to
work as a team to complete the activity.
Year 3/4:
Camp:
Last week we went on our long awaited camp to Weekaway Recreational
Camp, for 2 nights/3 days. We were super excited to get on the bus and head off
on our 2 hour journey. We were active from the minute we arrived.
Day 1: After lunch we began our outdoor activities, including canoeing, the maze,
archery, the low ropes course, the flying fox and hut building. The day was
overcast but the kids were excited and heavily engaged. They screamed their
way down the flying fox, they splashed their way around the lake whilst canoeing
and they worked as magnificent teams to create 'non-waterproof' wooden
huts. We ate lasagne for dinner before cooking marshmallows over the outdoor
fire. Our night concluded with a night walk through the surrounding bushland.
Day 2: The excitement of the day ahead meant that our eager campers were
awake and ready for the day's activities early in the morning. We started the day
with spaghetti on toast for breakfast, along with cereals and toast. By 9:30am we
were back outside participating in the activity program. Thankfully the rain
stopped every time we went to do an activity. Today we shot arrows over the
archery hut, got lost in the maze and tried hard to keep our feet off the ground
when completing the low ropes course. We participated in a Yabbie Person
contest, i.e., a team relay race before dinner. The level of team work was
outstanding....the laughter was even better! We were served a delicious roast for
dinner and we concluded our night with singing and dancing at our camp disco.
Day 3: Today was a sad day. So many of us said that we could stay another 1-2
days, easily. Day 2 wore us out, meaning that we slept in a little longer today.
Once we had packed up our suitcases and rooms we were treated to a
scrumptious serving of pancakes for breakfast. Our final activities were the group
initiatives. Listening to the laughter around the place was amazing. The kids had
so much fun.....so did the teachers!
Thank you to Mrs Malbon for working tirelessly to organise the camp. Thank you
also to Miss Nevins, Mr Ackland, Mr Clarke, Ms Branch, Miss Seregin, Miss Aiken,
Nicole Gamley and Natasha for supporting the students in being able to go on
camp. Without the teacher's commitment and support camps would not be
possible. Finally, thank you to all of the students for making the camp so much fun.
Here's what some of our students said about camp:
"Camp was amazing. I loved the flying fox, hut building and Yabbie Person. The
maze was the most fun." (Madison)
"Camp was fun. I liked the canoeing. The best thing that I did was Yabbie Person."
(Cameron)
"It was amazing. I loved canoeing and hut building. I'd definitely recommend it to
other schools." (Georgie)
"I loved camp because of all the food and activities." (Katie)
"I really enjoyed camp, especially the activities. My favourite activity was the flying
fox." (Emma)
"I really enjoyed camp. My favourite part was the flying fox and canoeing. The
food was delicious!" (Bella)
"I liked doing archery. They had really good food." (Josh)
"My favourite thing was the disco and my favourite activity was the hut building."
(Byron)
"My favourite activity was archery, canoeing and flying fox. Camp was good
because we still got to have time with our friends that weren't in our cabin or
group." (Hamish)
Year 5/6:
Community Sports Day practice
Cohen - I have been enjoying the competitiveness of Captain Ball and the
cheering.
Jacob - It is fun...It is great for learning how to act as a team.
Lucinda - The Tunnel Ball team works together really well.
Inquiry and Science - Building Solar Ovens
Kayley - It was great when we worked as a team.
Revin - Ours did not make much difference, but it was warmer than before. I think
it did not work because we covered the black paper with foil.
Jess - The marshmallows were good because they were half melted!
Sport News:
Congratulations to our fantastic athletes who have achieved so much and have
represented our school so well.
What a performance!
The Lilydale West Gators participated in the Year 3-4 Hooptime Basketball Regional
Finals on Friday 12th October at Kilsyth Basketball Stadium, and they ABSOLUTELY
DOMINATED! They won all of their group matches and then convincingly won their
final. They now move onto the State Championships at Dandenong in late
November. The boys and girls should be super proud of their achievement, so far,
and are super excited about their opportunity to play against the best teams in
the state. Congratulations and thanks to Carrie Beriman for her outstanding
coaching of the team.
Year 5-6 Community Sports Day
The permission form is now overdue.
There are still a substantial number of
students who have not returned theirs.
There is an expectation that all students
will participate, unless a very valid reason
has been discussed with school staff. All
students should have received a hard
copy of the notice. If misplaced, a copy
of the permission form can be found in
the documents section of the Parent
Portal.

RE: School Run 4 Fun Colour Explosion
From today, we commence the School Run4Fun Colour Explosion which is as a
major fundraiser this term so we do ask for your support. The more money we raise
the more we can provide for the students through vital school projects, in
particular shade sails for the outside play spaces.
The School Run4Fun Colour Explosion will be held on 14th December 2018 starting
at 2.15pm. We do ask that you bring a spare change of clothes to school, most
importantly a plain white shirt as the students will be covered in powder from head
to toe. The day’s focus is on fun and fitness with the added benefit of raising funds
for our school.
Colour Powder
The colour powder used in our event has been sourced direct from India, the home
of Holi Powder. It is made of high quality corn starch and permitted food colours.
It’s non-toxic, biodegradable, skin safe and environmentally friendly. Toxicological
Risk Assessment and ingredient listings can be obtained from the School Office
upon request. Students with asthma are advised to be careful in their decision to
participate.
