THIS WEEK AT THE CENTER… THIRTY - THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 18, 2018

The Presentation of the

Blessed Virgin Mary November 21

Mary’s presentation was celebrated in

Jerusalem in the sixth century. A church

was built there in honor of this mystery.

The Eastern Church was more interested

in the feast, but it does appear in the

West in the 11th century. Although the feast at times disap-

peared from the calendar, in the 16th century it became a feast of

the universal Church.

As with Mary’s birth, we read of Mary’s presentation in the tem-

ple only in apocryphal literature. In what is recognized as an

unhistorical account, the Protoevangelium of James tells us that

Anna and Joachim offered Mary to God in the Temple when she

was 3 years old. This was to carry out a promise made to God

when Anna was still childless.

Though it cannot be proven historically, Mary’s presentation has

an important theological purpose. It continues the impact of the

feasts of the Immaculate Conception and of the birth of Mary. It

emphasizes that the holiness conferred on Mary from the begin-

ning of her life on earth continued through her early childhood

and beyond. Reflection: It is sometimes difficult for modern

Westerners to appreciate a feast like this. The Eastern Church,

however, was quite open to this feast and even somewhat in-

sistent about celebrating it. Even though the feast has no basis in

history, it stresses an important truth about Mary: From the be-

ginning of her life, she was dedicated to God. She herself be-

came a greater temple than any made by hands. God came to

dwell in her in a marvelous manner and sanctified her for her

unique role in God’s saving work. At the same time, the magnif-

icence of Mary enriches her children. They—we—too are tem-

ples of God and sanctified in order that we might enjoy and

share in God’s saving work www.franciscamedia.org

Breaking Bread Homeless Ministries

News From The Streets… We Walk By Faith

By Mary Martha Primerano It’s 9:00 a.m. Thanksgiving morning, tables and

chairs are set and decorated, the registration table is receiv-ing volunteers to serve, and the homeless begin to arrive. The buffets are lit and heating. There is only one problem. Where’s the food?

When we say, “This is a God thing,” we really mean it. Our ministry is a total faith walk. In early November, we began to recruit volunteers to cook for our annual Thanks-giving dinner. After the first week, you could honestly count them on one hand. Then the second and third weeks rolled by, and still very few people volunteered to bring food. By this time, Walt and I had started blasting out Christian rap music while we handed out slips of paper inviting the home-less to a full Thanksgiving meal. Their faces lit up once they were invited to have Thanksgiving made especially for them. So we just hoped that some food would show up too . .

On the morning of the Thanksgiving Feast I thought, They’re coming, God! Where are the volunteers with the food? You’ve got to make this happen! I chose to keep my eyes on him and say, “Thank You, Lord, for your faithfulness.”

Then I began to see the volunteers arrive with food in their hands! Everyone began to stand in formation cheer-fully, ready to be used by God as his servants on this won-derful day.

Every year on Thanksgiving, we watch God do a loaves-and-fishes miracle. He is always faithful. I’ve always heard that God is never too early or too late—he’s always right on time. This is so true; we must always believe it. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists, and that he re-wards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).
