DavidSearcy,timpanistoftheLaScalaOperaorchestraformorethanthreedecades,diedon
August2,2011,afteralongillness. Davidwasasingularauthorityamongcol-leaguesallovertheworld,andformanyyoungtimpanistsandpercussionistsaninspiringteacherandfatherlyfriend.Hisplayingcareer,bothlyricandsymphonic,andhisinnatemusicalcuriositymadethescopeofhisknowledgeoftherepertoireprobablythebroadest,andhisinterpretationofthatrepertoirethedeepest,ofanytimpanistever.Hisnever-flagginginterestinmusichistoryfueledhisconvictionoftheworthoftraditioninanevermoreunsettledworld,andhelookedalwaystopassontheculturalheritageofhisinstrumentanditspracticetothosewhosoughthispres-ence. BorninRichmond,California,onJanuary21,1946,DavidfirststudiedinhishomecityofOakland,andinhisteenswasastudentofRolandKohloff.In1964hewenttoTanglewood,thenremainedontheEastCoasttostudywithVicFirth,andin1965gaveintoalong-heldwishtoplayinEuropewhenatimpaniopeningintheMusikselskabetHarmonieninBergen,Norway,madethemovepossible.Twoyearslaterhewaslookingfornewchallenges,otherconcepts,andanewartisticorientation.InViennahestudiedwithRichardHochrainer,andthenfoundhistruementorandguideinRobertHinzeinHamburg,Germany. In1968hebecamesolotimpanistoftheBavarianStateOperainMunich,wherehere-maineduntil1972whenClaudioAbbadoinvitedhimtojointheorchestraatLaScala.Later,whenAbbadofoundedtheEuropeanYouthOrchestraandtheGustavMahlerYouthOr-chestra,Davidwashisfirstchoiceforapercussiontutor. From1980untilhisdeath,DavidguidedthepercussionclassatMilan’sCivicMusicSchool.Here,heformedawholenewgenerationoftimpanistsforItalyandEurope,andafewmoredistantpartsoftheworldaswell.HewasalsovisitingProfessorattheRoyalAcad-emyofMusicinLondon. Davidbroughtawholesomefantasyintotheworldandnoone,notevenhispeers,everlefthiscompanywithouttakingawaysomebitofknowledgethatmademusic,orplaying,orevenlife,abitclearerandmoremeaningful.Forthatwe’llbeevergratefultohim.

Eachday,thestudentshadseveralhoursofclasstimewithLeigh,followedbypracticetimeattheinnwhereonehadtheopportunitytoworkindependentlyortojoinforceswithfriendsinhelpingeachothermasterthechallengingconceptsbeingpresented.WithLeigh,thestudentsparticipatedinlecture-basedclasseswithassignednightlyreadingpertainingtothediscussionsofthatday.Leighpresentedhistechnicalapproachtotheinstrumentwithdailydemonstrations.Healsotaughtlessonsonacoustics,practicing,phrasing,dynamics,reading,toneproduction,andmore.AllparticipantshadtheopportunitytoreceivefeedbackontheirplayingfromLeighinclass,aswellasfromNoraStevensinherafternoonstrokechecks. Thestudentsweresurroundedbyresourcestheycouldgotoforhelpandexpertise,whetheritwasinoroutofclass.Leigh’sMethod of Movementandhisassignedreadingsprovedtobevaluableresourcesthatthestudentscouldusetoaddresstheirdailythoughtsandquestions.Livingwiththeotherparticipantsalsogavestudentstheadvantageofusingeachotherassoundingboards,creatinganactivelearningprocessathome,aswellasintheclassroom.Eachmorning,Leighopenedupadiscussionforanythoughtsorquestionspertainingtothereadingandcorrespondingquizzes.Inthisway,thestudentswerelearningbothinandoutoftheclassroomeveryday. Thevarietyofguestartistsalsogreatlyinfluencedthisopen-mindedgroup.GordonStoutandNathanielBartlettbothgaveincredibleconcertsandmasterclasses.ThestudentsalsohadtheprivilegeofreceivingamasterclasscenteredontheAfricangyilfromValerieDeeNaranjo,ademonstrationofSuperMarimbabyPaytonMacDonald,andahighlyenergizedparticipation-baseddiscussionclasswithDennisDeLucia.Thevarietyofexpertisethatwaspresentedofferedthestudentsanopportunitytoopentheirmindstodifferentwaystoplayandthinkaboutpercussion.Additionally,theconcertseriesfeaturedNoraStevens,whoplayedabeautifulprograminthelovelyHolySpiritChurchin
AsburyPark,NewJersey.LeighStevensreturnedtothatsamevenueandconcludedtheseminarwithanincredibleprogramofmultipleBachworks,twoofhiscompositions,andapre-premiereofhisnewestwork-in-progress. Whenthestudentswerenotinclassorpracticing,manyfoundtimetoenjoythemarvelousbeachweatherjustoutsidetheinn.SomespenttimeexploringOceanGroveanditssurroundingcommunities,andafewevenmadeatriportwotoNewYorkCity.Bythefinalstudentconcertonthelastnight,asupportivegroupofindividualssatasaclassandsharedwhatwastomanyanemotionalendtoalife-changingexperiencetheywilltreasureforever.
Rosauro and Moore’s Mallet and Percussion Summer Camp The2011NeyRosauroandJeffMoore’sMalletandPercussionSum-merCamptookplaceattheUniversityofCentralFloridainOrlandoJuly17–23.InadditiontoRosauroandMoore,otherfacultyincludedDr.JohnParks,KirkGay,Dr.ThadAnderson,BrianPotts,andgraduateassistantsNickGuiliano(UniversityofSouthCarolina)andLuisAlber-toBittencourt(Brazil).ThecampispartofthehighlysuccessfulYamahaSoundsofSummerProgramwithadditionalsponsorshipsupportfromSabianandVicFirth. Twenty-onestudentsfromtheUnitedStatesplusfiveinternationalstudentsfromHongKong,Spain,Portugal,HollandandEquadorat-tendedthecamp.ThiswasthefirsttimethecampwasheldinthenewpercussionfacilitiesattheUniversityofCentralFlorida,anditexceededallexpectations.Thecampprovidedawell-roundedexperience,withstudentshavingtheopportunitytoworkinallareasofpercussion.Al-thoughmanycampsfocussolelyonmarimbaormarchingpercussion,theRosauro/Moorecampincludedvibraphone,marimba,snaredrum,multi-percussion,timpani,steeldrums,andLatin/Brazilianpercussion. Thisyearthestudentswereintroducedtodigitalnotationandplay-backutilizingSibeliussoftwareinthenewstate-of-the-artUCFMusicComputerLab.Inadditiontothepresentationsandlessons,camp-ersparticipatedinpercussionensemble,culminatinginafinalclosingconcertthatfeaturedmanyofNey’scompositionsincludingbothofhismarimbaconcertiaswellashisvibraphoneconcerto. Thecamphadafriendlyatmosphereandaperfectharmonybetweenstudentsandfaculty.Itwasarewardingexperienceforallparticipants.Nextyear’scampisscheduledtotakeplaceatUCFfromJuly15–21,2012.

First Annual world vibes Congress By Britton Matthews Inthe90-yearhistoryofthevibraphone,therehasneverbeenasemi-nardedicatedsolelytotheinstrument.Afterall,it’sjustlikeplayingmarimbawithapedal,right?LeaveittoMalletech,Inc.andtheLeighStevensMarimbaFoundationtoseetheneedandfillthevoid. TheWorldVibesCongress,heldinOceanGrove,NewJersey,wastheveryfirstofitskind.Participantsofallages,abilitylevels,andmusicalbackgroundsassembledfromaroundtheworldforaninspiringweekofimprovisationandmusic-makingfromJune24–29. Afterwakinguptothesoothingsoundoftheoceaneachmorning,participantsgatheredforsessionswithAndersÅstrandandEdSmith.Thegroupsplitintoself-appointedsegmentsforexperiencedimprovisersandnovicestoworkwiththeappropriatelevelofliteratureandbetterservethewiderangesofskillsets.Smallergroupsalsoallowedforgreaterindividualattentionandnumerousplayingopportunities. Åstrandledthegroupinfreeimprovisation,whereyoucouldspon-taneouslycreateamusicalconversationwithapersonyou’dnevermet.“Atriptothedentist,”or“ridingabicycle”inspireduninhibitedperfor-mancesandcreatedanoutletfortheparticipantstoopenupandexpressthemselves.Youmightnotevenspeakthesamelanguage,butthemusiceasilytranscendedthosebarriers.Anderswentbeyondthemusictodiscussphysicalconcernswithbodyposition,posture,andbreathing,aswell. ClasseswithEdSmithfocusedonthemorestructuredsideofim-
provisation,usingjazzstandardstoshowhowtoplaymelodiclinesoverchanges,findrichchordvoicings,andcompforsoloists.Participantsstudiedmodes,bluesscales,chordextensions,andphrasing,andhadtheopportunitytofilltherolesofsoloist,accompanist,andbassplayer.Themusicselectionsweretargetedtothelevelofeachgroup,buteveryonehadtheopportunitytoworkwithblues,rhythmchanges,Latinstyles,andmodalworks. Themorningsessionscreatedarelaxed,respectful,supportiveenviron-mentinwhichparticipantsbecameincreasinglycomfortableexploringnewtechniquesandmusicalideas.Theyprovidedsignificanthands-ontimeforallindividuals,andencouragedpeerstoworktogetherandlearnfromoneanother. Theconferenceincludeddailymasterclasseswithoneofsixall-starclinicians:DickSisto,DaveSamuels,ChristosRafalides,DaveHage-dorn,JoeLocke,andStefonHarris.Thesesessionscoveredtopicsinclud-inglistening,advancedeartraining,technicalindependence,phrasing,melodicexpression,pedagogy,andabroadrangeofcreativetipsforde-velopingrelevantpracticeregimens.Eachclinicianhadauniquesound,style,andapproach,buttheyeachdeliveredonemind-blowingperfor-manceafteranother. Theweekconcludedwithafinalperformanceandall-heck-break-loosejamsession.WVCparticipants,ledbyÅstrand,performedpiecesthattheydevelopedthroughouttheweek,andSmithgaveastunningperformanceof“Neptune,”writtenforthecapabilitiesofMalletech’sLoveVibe.TheeveningculminatedwithanenergeticduoperformancebyLockeandHarristhatbroughttheentireaudiencetoitsfeet. Whiletheoryandtechniquewereemphasizedheavilythroughouttheweek,thegreaterpurposeoftheWorldVibesCongresshadlittletodowithtechnique,notes,orrhythms.Rather,itwasaboutfindingthemusicinsidetheplayerandlearningtoexpressthatpassionthroughtheinstru-mentandcommunicatewithmusicalcolleagues.Theoverallresultwasanexperiencejustasimportantforabeginnerasaseasonedpro.

Stewart The10thanniversaryoftheZeltsmanMarimbaFestival(ZMF)tookplaceJune26toJuly9when20renownedartists,38participants,and24marimbasconvergedonthecampusofLawrenceUniversityinApple-ton,Wisconsin.Thisyear’s“FocusonGreatRepertoire”unfoldedoverninefacultyconcerts,threeparticipantconcerts,andmultiplemasterclasses,lectures,andprivateandgrouplessons. TheZMF2011facultyincludedNancyZeltsman(artisticdirector),NanaeMimura,FumitoNunoya,ChristosRafalides,JackVanGeem,andDaneRicheson(host).Forthe10thanniversary,tenpast“ZMF-ers”werefeatured:BrianCalhoon,CaseyCangelosi,Anne-JulieCaron,HiroyaHonda,SetsukoKutsuno,andMikeTruesdellasassociatefac-ulty;andJeremyBarnett,LaurelBlack,MattSharrock,andXi(Rachel)Zhangasshowcaseartists.Guestperformers/lecturerswereFernandoMeza(organizinganinternationalevent),bassistSteveRodby(musictechnology),pianistSergioSalvatore(improvisation),andviolinistYukaSato(Bach’sstringmusiconmarimba). MikeTruesdellguidedinformationalpre-concerttalkswithseveralartistsfeaturedonmostevenings’concerts.ParticularlymovingwasthetalkprecedingtheJapaneseMarimbaMusicconcert(abenefitfortheJapanEarthquakeReliefFund).HiroyaHondarecountedhispersonalexperienceswiththeJapaneseearthquakeandtsunamithatstrucknearhishomelastMarch;Mimura,Nunoya,andKutsunorelayedthepower-fuleffectsfeltinotherpartsofJapan.

Non-marimbaeventswerescatteredthroughZMFaswell.ThefirstdayincludedanenergeticAfricandancinganddrummingsessionledbyRichesonandTruesdell,andamallet-wrappingclinicbyHonda.Dur-ingthesecondweek,participantswereawestruckatthecapabilitiesoftheMalletKATasexplainedbyBarnett.VanGeemledasessiononor-chestralexcerpts,andCangelosigaveafantasticpresentationonhisowncompositionalprocess. Openandfriendlycommunicationbetweenfacultyandparticipantsandacaring,familyatmospherewerematchedwithabsolutelyoutstand-ingmusicmaking.This10thanniversaryeventtrulywillbecherishedbyall,andstoodasatestamenttothegreatqualityanddiversityofmusi-ciansthatexistinourpercussiveworld. Since1976,thePercussiveArtsSocietyInternationalConvention(PASIC)hasbeenthepremiereventforpercussion-
istsfromaroundtheworld.Formanyyears,oneofthemajormarketingtoolstopromotethisevent,aswellasthesocietyingeneral,wasviaposters.Atfirst,postersweresenttothegeneralmembershipinseparatemailingstoencouragenewmembership,advertiseevents(suchasclinicsandperformances),andtopro-motesubscriptionstothejournals. In1977,aposterfeaturedpicturesofthefirstPASICinRochestershowingthemainhalloftheEastmanSchoolwithexhibitsaswellasotherclinics.By1979,ageneralposterforPASICwasestablished,givingallessentialinformationonemightneedtobeencouragedtoattendandregisterfortheevent,includ-ingdates,location,hotelaccommodations,andtypesofsessions.Postersfromthistimethroughthelate1980sweregenerallyastan-dardpostersizeof17x22inches,butafewvariedforartisticpurposes.Bythe1990s,theposterswerefoldedandinsertedinthePercus-sive NotesPASICPreviewissue(October),andreducedtoa16x20inchsizeforthispurpose. PASICpostersoftenfocusedonthecitywheretheconventionwasheldandprovidedthenameofthehost,thedailyschedule,andmajorartists.Inthelate1990s,picturesofthehostcitywereabandonedinfavorofonemajorartist,withdetailedlistingsofalloftheotherartistsbrokenintobroadcategories,suchasmarching,education,drumset,concert,healthandwellness,orkeyboard.Attimes,thede-signerofaposterisnamedandcredittothephotographer(s)appearonaposter,butsomeposterswerecommissionedbythelocalPASIChostandnoinformationaboutthedesignerswasavailable.Startingin1998,PASICposterswerecreatedbyPASin-housegraphicdesignerHillaryHenry. PASICpostersceasedtobeprintedafter2002,butmanyPASmembersfondlyre-memberpreviousconventionsbytheposters,location,andintegrationoftheartworkfromtheposterwitheachPercussive NotesPASICPreviewissueortheactualPASICProgram.Thosewhoidentifywiththepostersoftenhaveafavorite,suchasthe“PiquantGumboofEvents”fromPASIC’92inNewOrleans,orthedrawingofDisneylandbyTedEngelbartforPASIC’91inAnaheim.

BornonJune6,1946inNeptune,NewJersey,MartyHurleyfollowedinthefoot-stepsofhisfather,anArmydrummerduringWorldWarII.Attheageofseven,HurleyjoinedtheO’BrienMajorPoliceCadets.OthercorpshewasinvolvedwithweretheNeptuneShoreliners,AsburyParkHurricanes,St.JosephModernaires,JerseyCyclones,theBlessedSacramentGoldenKnights(heagedoutin1967)andHaw-thorneCaballeros(1968). AftergraduatingfromNeptuneHighSchool,heattendedWilkesCollege(nowWilkesUniversity)inWilkes-Barre,Penn-sylvania,earningamusiceducationdegree.HealsoplayedincommunityorchestrasinWilkes-BarreandnearbyScranton.Follow-inggraduation,hejoinedtheAirForceBandandwasstationedinBiloxi,Mississippiforfouryears. Hurleybeganhisteachingcareerin1971whenheassistedDickFilkenswiththeStardustersDrumCorpsfromArabi,Louisiana.In1972,manyofthemembersoftheStardustersjoinedthenewMetairie,Louisiana-basedBleuRaedersdrumcorps,whereHurleyservedasthedruminstructorfortwoyears.In1973,hejoinedthestaffoftheBlackKnightsfromBelleville,Illinois,whilecontinuingtoteachtheBleuRaeders.HeremainedwiththeBlackKnightsuntil1975. In1976,Hurleyjoinedthestaffof thePhantomRegimentDrumandBugleCorpsfromRockford,Illinois.SomeofhisclassicsolosfortheRegimentinclude“FlightoftheBumblebee”andGrieg’s“MarchoftheDwarfs.” Duringhisaffiliationwiththecorps,thePhantomRegimentplacedsecondin1977,1978,and1979.Hewasalsoanintegralpartofthecreativestaffforthefirsttwoproduc-tionsoftheKhachaturianballet“Spartacus”in1981and1982.Hurleycontinuedteach-ingtheRegimentuntil1983beforetakingafewyearsoff.HereturnedtotheRockford-basedcorpsin1987andremainedontheirstaffuntil1992.In2004,Hurleywasin-ductedintotheWorldDrumCorpsHallofFame.

HurleywasalsoinvolvedinthedesignofLudwig’sHighVolume(HV)snaredrum,whichtheRegimentdrumlineusedbeginningin1981.Similartoaregularmarchingsnaredrum,ithadtwoinchescutfromthemiddleoftheshell,leavingthetophalfandbottomhalfjoinedbythetensioncasings.“TheHVdrumcamefromtryingtogetadrumthatwouldhavealittlemoreprojectionpower—alittlemoreclarityforasnaredrum,”hesaidinaModern Percussionistinterview. In1974,Hurleytookajobthathewouldhavefortherestofhislife:banddirectoratBrotherMartinHighSchoolinNewOrleans.Hestartedastheassistanttolongtimedirec-torArthurHardy,workingwiththemarchingband,stageband,andsecondconcertband,beforehetookoverasheaddirectorin1989. DuringhistimeatBrotherMartin,Hurley’sensemblesconsistentlyreceivedsuperiorrat-ingsatlocalandregionalcontestsandfestivals.HisbandsperformedforthePope,twoU.S.Presidents,twoLouisianagovernors,countlessMardiGrasparadesandeventhefirst-everplayoffgameforhisbelovedNewOrleansSaintsfootballteam. HurleywasinductedintotheLouisianaMusicEducatorsAssociation(LMEA)HallofFamein2010.DuringhistimeatBrotherMartinHighSchool,hehadabout80percus-sionstudentsearnspotsinoneoftheLouisi-anaAllStateensembles. HurleyalsoservedasthepercussioninstructoratNichollsStateUniversityinThibodaux,Louisianaforseveralyearsinthe1980s.HejudgedthefinalsoftheMarchingBandsofAmericaNationalChampionshiptwiceandalsoadjudicatedthePASMarchingForum(nowtheMarchingPercussionFesti-val)fourtimes,in1982,1988,1994,and1996. Asapercussionclinician,HurleygaveseminarsatregionalandnationalmeetingsoftheMusicEducatorsNationalConference(MENC),theNationalCatholicBandAs-sociation(NCBA)Conference,theLMEAConference,theTexasMusicEducatorsAs-sociation(TMEA)Convention,andPASIC. HurleygavetwoclinicsatPASICwiththePhantomRegimentdrumline,in1981(Indianapolis)andin1988(SanAntonio).AtPASIC’92inNewOrleans,heservedasCo-ordinatorfortheMarchingForum.AtPASIC2001inNashville,hetaughtamarchingmas-terclasswithJohnPrattandMitchMarkov-ich.AndattheDrummer’sHeritageConcert
heldatPASIC2002inColumbus,Hurleywasoneofthefeaturedsnaredrumsoloists. Inadditiontothedrumcorpsandmarch-ingbandmusicthathewrote,Hurleycom-posednumeroussnaredrumsolosanddrumcadencesthatwereoriginallypublishedbyRudimentalPercussionPublications—thecompanyhefoundedwithJohnWooton—andcurrentlybyRow-LoffProductions.Healsotaughtmarchingpercussioncampsallacrossthecountry,includingonesponsoredbythePhantomRegimentinRockfordandoneattheUniversityofSouthernMissis-sippiinHattiesburg. DozensofHurley’sformerstudents,frombothBrotherMartinHighSchoolandthePhantomRegiment,aswellastheothercorpshetaughtovertheyears,havegoneontopursuecareersinmusic.Thesemenandwomenserveascollegepercussioninstruc-tors,highschoolandmiddleschoolbanddirectors,privatelessonteachers,anddrumcorpsinstructors.
