The Pentecost Project and Inspiration

“I am SO PROUD to be in the same denomination as Pacific Grove Christian Church!!!!”

--- Sandhya Jha, Pastor of First Christian Church of Oakland (written on her Facebook page with a link to the Pentecost Project video for The Christian Church of Pacific Grove)

Sandhya said it because she meant it. She saw our Pentecost Project video on Facebook and immediately wrote this quote including a link so others can see the video. I’m proud too. Members and friends of this congregation were asked to pay attention to the brokenness in the neighborhood and find a way to personally offer healing. The results have been inspiring. The six folks who agreed to spearhead The Pentecost Project are shining examples of the heart of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) – they have embodied the proclamation that we are a church where faith meets reason. And the individuals who took this suggestion via newsletter articles, email messages and weekly Sunday morning announcements to find one special project to tackle during the Pentecost Season have embodied gracefulness and generosity. Yes, indeed, I am proud, too.

What a tremendous gift it was, to sit in a pew with one of my bona fide mentors in the ministry Dwight Edwards and watch the video together with all of you. My heart soared as example after example of Christian mission flashed on the monitor. And it continues to be a gift, as I get to share the good news of Jesus Christ through the unselfish service of members of this congregation with colleagues across North America. And I get to have the grace-filled moments with each share knowing full-well that our fellow Disciples are feeling the infusion of Spirit, that is feeling the inspiration.

Well done good and faithful servants of the lord. Well done!

See you in church,

Dan

Pastor Dan,

On behalf of the Regional Reconciliation Committee, I would like to thank the faithful Saints at Pacific Grove for their support of the reconciliation special offering.

This year we were able to fund 5 grants for reconciliation seed monies in our region.

Congratulations on your Pentecost Projects celebration and dinner yesterday.

Blessings on each one of you, as you are the visible signs of God’s love in the world.

The theme of this years special offering is “Hearts of Fire” from Act’s 2:1-21.

Annual Meeting

Please, Save the Date: November 14th

The date of our Annual Meeting is fast approaching and I am hopeful that we will have as many members as possible present for this important event. This is your annual opportunity to participate in some of the most significant decisions of our church’s life. Every member’s vote counts; please plan to attend services and stay for the meeting afterward on Sunday, November 14th, 2010.

The members of the Administrative Board have received the proposed changes to the By-Laws from the By-Laws Review Committee, the proposed slate of officers from the Nominating Committee, and the proposed budget from the Stewardship & Finance Committee. Please join me in recognizing and thanking all of the members of each of these committees for the many hours of coordination with a variety of entities and individuals, the weeks of careful consideration, and the months of prayerful discernment it took to complete this vital work. The members of the Administrative Board recommend these proposals to you whole-heartedly. Please review these proposals, which you will soon receive.

Again, please join me in thanking all the people who have worked so hard to bring you all the proposals for the 2010 Annual Meeting.

A Beautiful and Inspiring Story of Magali Negron’s

Journey with Cancer

When Lori invited me to write my story for the newsletter, I wanted to share how wonderful God had and continues to be with me. I would like to share part of my experience during my cancer treatment using Quam's poem (which she forward during my ordeal) entitled “Cancer is so Limited”, as a guide for my presentation. Quam is our Regional Office secretary whose sister journeyed through the difficult path of cancer. Keep in mind as you read, "IT" refers to cancer.

It cannot cripple love. I felt the love of God through this long journey. First, when I enter the operating room my mind was set on Psalm 23, especially that part that reads, "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you art with me." He will always be with us. With my husband's company, our pastor Dan, and Ben Bohren who travel from San Francisco to pray, I felt as if angels had surrounded me through this very difficult moment.

It cannot shatter hope. My faith grew no matter what had happened. My hope was anchored on the belief that some day we will walk with him forever.

It cannot corrode faith. Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, and the conviction of things not seen. These are words of an inspired author who must have walked the walk and lived in trying moments yet discovered that in the midst of chaos faith provokes positive thoughts.

It cannot destroy peace. John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you, do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." In this journey I felt the peace of God and did not allow depression to take hold of my life when I glanced upon my scars. The loss of hair as the result of the chemotherapy and the weakness of my right side of my body did not scar my faith or compromised my peace of mind. When I looked into the mirror I said, "I only want to see the reflection of your image."

It cannot kill friendships. I received daily phone calls and post cards and encouraging letters from family members, co-workers, and church members from New York, Florida, Texas, Puerto Rico, Pennsylvania, and California. God truly listened to people who prayed and had good thoughts concerning my health. In moment like these phone calls turnout to be therapeutic; When people called me they admired my positive attitude. And to my husband I have to say "Thank you" because he stood by me at every moment providing the spiritual and emotional support needed. He was present at every appointment and treatment through the nine long months.

Page 11: October 2010 Lighthouse (Read-Only) - Christian … 2010...Sandhya said it because she meant it. She saw our Pentecost Project video on Facebook and immediately wrote this quote including

It cannot suppress memories. Life is wonderful when you live near to God. My experience through this event has taught me that in the act of praising him, counting his blessings one can truly recognize and experience the power of God.

It cannot silence courage. When you live through an experience like this, one cannot be silent.

I want to share with others what God has accomplished in my life. And when I have the opportunity, I tell the story.

It cannot invade soul. Like Christians, we are part of God's agenda and that is important and true. There is no space for any pessimism. Paul once said, "I can do everything through who gives me strength."

It cannot steal eternal life or conquer the Spirit. I conclude by recalling Ezekiel affliction when an entire nation was decimated and in the midst of the pain God delivered words of comfort saying" I will put my spirit in you and you will live, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior."

Changes

“There’ll be a change in the weather

And a change in the scene.

From now on there’ll be a change in me”.

These lines are from a popular song of the 40’s.

The season has changed and so has the weather,

And because of these changes some of our

activities will change. What about the last line

quoted, Have we lived up to our New Year's resolutions? Have we made any of the

changes in ourselves that we promised God and ourselves that we would make?

Everything around us changes perpetually….David 2:21. Sometimes it is so hard for

us to keep up, but God is always there when we need him. The Lord is only a prayer

away. God never changes….Hebrews 13:8; we can rely on that
