“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave wedding feast for his son He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast saying ‘Tell those invited ‘Behold, I have prepared my banquet…and everything is ready, come to the feast’… ‘Go out, therefore, into the main
roads and invite to the feast whomever you find…Many are invited, but few are chosen.’” A recent popular book was entitled ‘What Is Heaven Like?’ It was a compelling story. Years ago, Matthew used the parables of Jesus to tell us what the kingdom is like. Using very descriptive examples we learned about a treasure, a pearl, a net, a seed, and on several occasions a banquet, a fine wedding reception, a fiesta or party. We have been invited through our baptism to join a great banquet. We have responded as we try to live a Christian life of holiness and service. But the parable adds another dimension. We have a role as guest, but also are servants. We who have accepted the invitation and participate in the banquet, are also the servants, being sent to the main roads to bring others to His table of plenty. Our task, as Pope Francis tells us, is to have others encounter Jesus, invite them and accompany them to the banquet. We need to show them they already have their ticket and a place at His table.

Envió a sus servidores con el encargo de decir a los invitados: ‘Mi banquete está preparado, vengan a las bodas’… ‘Salgan a los caminos e inviten a todos los que encuentren. Porque muchos son llamados, pero pocos son elegidos.’” Un popular libro reciente se intitula ‘¿Cómo es el Cielo?’ Es una historia cautivante. Hace años San Mateo utilizó las parábolas de Jesús para explicarnos cómo es el reino. Usando ejemplos descriptivos aprendemos sobre un tesoro, una perla, una red, una semilla, y en varias ocasiones, un banquete, una especial recepción de boda, o una fiesta. Hemos sido invitados a través del bautismo a asistir a un gran banquete. Hemos respondido al tratar de vivir una vida cristiana en santidad y servicio. Pero la parábola añade una nueva dimensión. Tenemos el papel de invitados, pero también de siervos. Los que hemos aceptado la invitación y participamos en el banquete somos también los siervos, que se nos ha enviado a las calles a invitar a otros a Su mesa de abundancia. Nuestra tarea, como el Papa Francisco nos indica, es lograr que otros encuentren a Jesús, invitarlos y acompañarlos al banquete. Necesitamos mostrarles que ellos ya tienen la entrada y un lugar a Su mesa.
Come riuscirà la Chiesa, Sposa di Cristo, a presentare agli uomini del nostro mondo, della nostra società post-cristiana, l’incredibile invito del Padre alle nozze di suo Figlio? Come far sedere alla tavola di questo “banchetto di grasse vivande, di cibi succulenti, di vini raffinati” un’umanità apparentemente senza
appetito? Questo compito appassionante di tutta la Chiesa - questa nuova evangelizzazione - deve occupare tutti i figli del nuovo popolo di Dio. Ne va di mezzo la vita e la vita del mondo. Sembra che annunciare l’invito con un nuovo ardore, con nuovi metodi, con una nuova espressione non sia un mezzo superato. Alcuni tra coloro che trasmettono questo invito alle nozze saranno forse maltrattati, forse uccisi. Ci saranno certamente quelli che rifiutano l’invito. Poco importa. C’è gente agli angoli delle strade. Basta annunciare con convinzione che noi andiamo a un banchetto, che l’invito di Cristo è arrivato fino a noi e che noi conosciamo le portate. Basta sapere che noi possiamo tutto in colui che ci conforta. L’annunciamo così? Siamo convincenti perché abbiamo già partecipato a questo banchetto? Non c’è niente di più ripugnante di coloro le cui parole ripetono quello che dicono gli altri, senza dare prova di alcuna esperienza.
