This seminar will provide an update on occupational challenges presented by blood- borne and representative respiratory pathogens in the context of current science. The most recent British Columbia provincial and (Centre for Disease Control) infection control recommendations, hand hygiene, vaccinations, and other preventive measures (i.e. personal protective equipment, instrument reprocessing, disinfection, and dental water asepsis) are frameworks for this presentation.Proactive communication ideas for discussion with patients are also included. In addition, the most recent evidence-based information is discussed to address certain issues where perceptions and misuse of infection control procedures and products are in conflict with scientific and clinical knowledge. Thus, a major goal of this presentation is to help dental professionals increase their understanding of the “why” as well as the “what” of infection control practices.
